The place where content is stored is the content database is stored. So
the answer lies with SQL Server.
I present you at present have a single-server solution. (running Windows
Internal Database ?)
The best way to slay two things with one stone - i.e. to both give
yourself more disk space and also speed up your system, would therefore
seem to be to add a server running SQL Server 2005 and transfer your
present databases to it.
That server would have much more space AND you will now have an
efficient front-end WSS + back-end SQL Server system
