Hi I have a problem with my Sharepoint portal, the problem is that when
people not on our site but other places. EIther they have their own domain or
are just in a workgroup. They login to the portal , no problem but when they
try to open up a document on a document library they are asked to login again
if they do the document opens up but I want to get rid of this second login.
I have no idea, I've already looked at the IIS settings and it is set to

Sharepoint v3 Compatible Applications
Out of the box you cannot use the "New" button in a sharepoint document
library that has a template for an application that is not a Microsoft Office
app. I need to create a document library for AutoCAD drawings with a template
that includes the border. Is there any way to get this done? If not

Permissions Question
Is it possible to configure SharePoint Services so that the user is not
prompted to log in? I am looking to use this to update our organization's
intranet and would like to know if I can set SharePoint to allow access based
on the credentials of the user that is logged into the machine rather than

Picture Library issues
Hi,
I have two questions on Picture library and I would appreciate if anybody
can help me with these two questions.
1) How can I print individual pictures with their metadata only? (I do not
want to print screen)

Document Template in Custom Doc Lib
I have a strange behavior that I can't seem to pinpoint what is going
on.
I have created my own custom site defintion with 2 new additional
document libraries.
For each doc library, they have their own respective document
templates.
One Doc Library called "Design", the document templates are
template1.dgn and template2.dgn.
The other doc library called "Drawing", the document templates are
template1.dwt and template2.dwt.
When I go to the explorer view of the Design doc lib, and inspect the
forms folder for the the file sizes of the two document templates are
20&30KB and when I drag and drop them to my desktop they are the
20&30KB respectively.
However, when I go to the explorer view of the Drawing doc lib, and
inspect the forms folder for the the file sizes of the two document
templates. They are 30Kb and 25KB respectively. This is correct as
well. But, when I drag and drop them to my desktop, they become 1KB
each. Why is the file size changing. This is causing errors whereby I
am trying to create a new document with the document template from
sharepoint.

Problem with _layout links
Hello,
We're running a Sharepoint Portal Server SP2 and encounter a strange
problem ...
About once a week all links on the portal that have _layout in them
(all links pointing to 60 hive) stop working and give a 404 error.
Performing an iisreset doesn't solve the problem, rebooting the machine
does.
Anyone an idea what could be the cause of this behaviour ? I don't know
where to start looking.
Could it have anything to do with regional settings ? Some admin pages
keep switching from dutch to english sometimes too ...

Users with unwanted permissions
Hello,
I'm running Sharepoint Services 2.0. Just deployed it here at work for
about 80 users. All is going pretty well so far. However, I have two
users who are set to 'reader' only, but when visiting the Sharepoint
site, they have Admin permissions. They get the 'modify page' links and
other functionality they should not have.
I have verified they are indeed in the 'reader' group only. Is there
some other setting that could be overriding those permissions?

Import web page
Hello all,
I'm new to Sharepoint Services. Just installed about a week a go and I'm
in the middle configuring it for an Intranet here at work. We'll have
about 80 users visiting the site. The installation went fine and seems
to be operating as designed.
I'm wondering if there is a way to 'import' an existing HTML page so
that when a link is clicked, the page displays in the existing site
instead of opening up a new window and showing only that page and it's
layout. I have some very plan information pages I would like to load in
the middle web part when a link is clicked.
Additionally, I've done all my editing either in the Sharepoint
interface or using Notepad. What's the best XML editor to use for
Sharepoint pages? I'd prefer to stay away from FP if that is feasible.
I do have a lot of experience with HTML, CSS etc. Sharepoint and XML are
new to me.

Problems with Swedish character in filename
Hi
Have problems with one customer that have problems with swedish characters
(åäö) in filename. They cannot upload document that have filenames with
characters (åöä). Have Windows Sharepoint Services 2 SP2, language pack SP2
and SQL 2000 SP4

Reusable content editor web part
Hey Community I was hoping someone could point me in the right
direction. Also let me know if this post would be better in another Group.
So my question is is it possible to to have a
Content Web Editor part that you could save to a LIST page for use
later like the announcements part. Currently when you close the webpart
all the content it held is gone.
The reason why i ask I have a company
that would like to use this to create a newletter but they dont want to
display on the CWE parts in teh production page till someone reviewss
the articles. If you were able to lets say create a content web editor
web part name and save it on a Doc Lib then have the person responsible
can then create a Page through the create menu in site setting or use
an existing one and just drag and drop the parts in the layout/order he
sees fit without worrying which article are displayed to the public
without being checked first. If this cant be done out the box does
anyone know if there is a product/website/blog providing the solution.

office save website view
something very strange
i open a word (office document) document from a document library at wss
when i want to save it back at the wss
at the save or save as dialogbox ,dont show me the website view , only all
the others views . when i try to change the view , it shows me it for one
second and then disapear
in all the others views it shows me the document libraries as "doclib1"
doclib2.... . and shows me the internal folders as "forms " "list " .....
any clue....

The one and most important: You are not able to create views.
We want to sort the answers monthly. Is this possible in the new version?

WSS v3 CreateSite error "Value does not fall within the expected range"
Hi,
Recently I have created a web application that could create new sites.
After installing WSS v3 I keep on receiving the "Value does not fall
within the expected range" error from
Microsoft.Sharepoint.SoapServer.SoapServerException.
I can reach the admin web service, I've added the web reference,
created a new instance of the Admin class.
This is how I try to create a new site:

Changed name of W2K3 server --> Cannot connect to the config db
I had to change the name of the W2K3 server that hostes a test-verion of WSS.
When I try to connect to WSS I get the following error :
Cannot connect to the configuration database. For tips on troubleshooting
this error, search for article 823287 in the Microsoft Knowledge Base at
http://support.microsoft.com
None of the options in the KB solved my problem. I can't check method 3
since I don't have a Microsoft SQL server option under Programs. I think it
is because I work with the MSDE-version.
I found that under WSS-configuration the old name of the server is specified
for the server that holds the config-database. However when I change that
name I again recieve an error.

'List' permissions question
I think if someone is able to answer this question it will solve my problem.
What permissions would a group have that would be able to contribute to a
sharepoint list, but NOT be able to modify any of the views of the list? For
example, they would not be able to modify any of the Filters of any view. And
would those be setup under 'Manager Users' or somewhere else?

A SharePoints Documents Question
NOTE: I first posted this question in windows.server.sbs - I know that
cross-posting is frowned upon, but then I discovered this site which seems
more appropriate to my question. I apologize if this offends anyone.
We are now just beginning to play around with SharePoint, starting with
General Documents. Here is my understanding from what I've done so far. On
the sbs server, we have lots of work files in a folder named 'Public' which
everyone shares. We
would like to have 3-5 users be able to access those files, both while in
the office and from home. To try out SharePoint I created a folder under
General Documents called 'Shared' and copied some test files from 'Public'
over to 'Shared'. And as expected, those files were accessible remotely.
I only copied a few test files over because of two concerns: One, the
duplicating of existing files - and secondly, the doubling of space used. --
However, when I went to the server and did a search for the files, all of
them still resided in the original 'Public' folder. So, my understanding is
that files copied from within SharePoint to a new folder in General
Documents aren't really copied, but are only linked. Is this true?

in my beta pack, there is also Office Server software, which includes Office
Sharepoint Server 2007.

how do office 2007 and office server 2007 work together? and how do they
work with WSS version 3?

Can't get Search configured/running under WSS 3.0 Beta 2
Hi all, any help with this one would be appreciated...
I have a WSS 2.0 site running on the same system with SQL Server 2005. The
site is/was working flawlessly.
I installed WSS 3.0 beta 2 and chose to do an upgrade of the existing site.
Everything works great after the upgrade... except for Search.
I get to the Central Admin page to configure Search on my web application,
and fill out the form... when I try to hit OK, I get an error page that
states "Error" as the title and "Unknown error" as the subtext. Not very
helpful. :)
The event log shows that some part of the process was trying to log into SQL
Server and apparently the login failed. Following this is an error: "Unknown
SQL exception 2812 occurred. Could not find shared procedure
dbo.proc_MSS_GetConfiguration_Property."
If I manually remove the Search table from SQL Server using the SQL Server
Manager and then manually create the table, then go and try to configure
search, I can see event log entries indicating schema elements being added to
the table successfully etc, then the above error.
Odd part is: the credentials with which I am trying to set up Search are the
Domain Admin user/pass, and these are both known to be correct and known to
work properly for pretty much everything else in the site, including
creating/deleting/manipulating the table in SQL.

site template and security
I made a site with several libraries and different permissions.
When exporting the site as a template I got a stp file.
I use stsadm.exe for adding this template, no problem so far.
When creating a site I can choose the template and the site is made with all
libraries, but all permissions are set to default.
Is it possible to export a site as a template including the permissions?
Second question I must made a lot of sites.
Is it possibele with commandline and batching?

Automatically deleting forms in a Form Library
Hi,
Is it possible to automatically delete a form in a Form Library?
What I am trying to do is; I have created a form via InfoPath and saved it
in Library 1. Once someone has updated the form it needs to be move to
Library 2.
The only way I know of doing this is to open the form, update it then choose
the 'Save As' option and save it in Library 2, I would then have to go back
to Library 1 and delete it from there.
Is there another way? Either through code that would allow me to
automatically move the form from Library 1 to Library 2?

Default the Title for an Event
Is there a way to determine the Title for a new event by default when it is
entered, based on a value in another field of that table? I know that I can
set the default to static text, but I'd like to be able to make the title
default to a value that is selected from a drop-down list in the detail area
of the event.

I have these two questions for you, I hope you can help me:
- How do i add the Microsot Communicator status into a contact
list?.....Iâ??ve seen that in a document list appears an icon of the Office
Communicator status (like in de Modify by column) and I want to have the same
in a contact list.
- In my portal I have like 40 users, two of them appear with this

I have a very interesting SPQuery/CAML Challenge for everyone:
1. I have a custom Sharepoint List living in a WSS (non-portal) site.
2. Each item in the list has 1 or more attached files.
3. I want to use the SPQuery object to formulate a CAML query that
searches not only
all the standard list fields (columns), but ALSO the FULLTEXT of
each of the attached
files.
4. The CAML query will be passed to the SPList.GetItems(strMyCAMLQuery)
method,
and return a SPListItemCollection, which I will transform to a
DataTable, bind to
a DataGrid, and all will be right with my world...
Q1 - DOES anyone know if this IS possible (otherwise attaching files is
useless)?
Q2 - CAN anyone provide me with a solid online reference for doing this
in CAML?

Installed WSS on Certificate Services Server
Hello,
I had a server running Certificate Services on the default web site. Then I
installed WSS and now cannot access my Certificate Authority through http.
Apparently WSS overwrote my CA and now is the default web site.
I am however, able to access the CA through Administrative Tools /
Certification Authority tool and see all my certificates. I just can't
create new certificates or get to the CA page like I use to, using
http://ca-server.
The WSS server was moved off the default site to it's own space and is
working fine (second install of WSS), but the first install of WSS still
shows the WSS Team Web Site when I try to access via http://ca-server.
Does anyone know how to remove the WSS from the default site and get my CA
working again?

Problem with adding/browsing for WebParts on Sharepoint site
Hello,
When I try to add a WebPart to a Sharepoint homepage (via Modify Shared page
- Add web parts - Browse) I get a "Cannot find server or DNS Error".
This problem occurs on our WSS dev and production site. I have admin rights
to both environments. For other users this works fine. I don't seem to have
any other problems on these sites.
Does anyone know what could cause this problem?

Is there a way to change the format of a date to equal just the month.
For example, the current date format is dd/mm/yyyy. I would like it to

Web part for customizing a database directly from the web
Looking for a web part for administration of a customer directory (database
in SQL Server 2005) and a customer view of that database via Sharepoint.
What I want the web part to do is very generic: Enable me to via Sharepoint,
take out a customer database from SQL Server, list all variables in all
tables in the database and let me create a customer view by selecting which
variables from that database to show in the customer view, which fields
should be editable, what values can be assigned to the different variables,
etc.
I.e. say I have a customer database for a company that sales cars and I want
to create that kind of searchable and editable, customized consumer view of
that database. In the administration interface, I would then select relevant
variables for the sales force to view and edit in the contacts with consumers
such as registration number, adress information, when was the car repaired,
etc. etc.
As accessing a database via an administration interface over the web to
configure a view of that database sounds very generic, I was wondering if
anyone of you knows of any third-party or Microsoft web parts that could do
that trick?
I found a web part on the Microsoft web parts gallery site that sounded
promising ("Customer Directory" in "Great Plains") but the detail page link
for that web part is broken unfortunately.

Windows Share Point services Problems in Small Bisiness Server 200
I have posted the same question in WSS Development area but I realized it
wasn't the proper area so I'm re-posting here. Well here goes :
Hello all.
I have the following case and any reply would be appreciated.
I have a client who has an SBS and everything installed and running.
Everything includes AD , Exchange , SQL , ISA and WSS. This server was
installed on a disk array with no redundancy and his back up suite cannot
backup files that are open by the time of the backup operation. The
controller of the server failed the other day and the array of the disk was
destroyed. The client , prior to any call to me , rebuilt the array ,
re-installed SBS ( clean installation ) , imported the system state back up
and tried to bring back all the other aplications. This is when he called me.
Exchange and SQL wouldn't start so , after a lot of work , I reinstalled
Exchange ( I had to remove a number of Exchange objects and services in the
domain ) and also reinstalled SQL. In any case the wss site would start
because he couldn't access SQL.
I installed sp2 of wss and began trying to resolve his problem with wss.
The problem is :
As I can unserstand , IIS metadata haven't been backed up neither by the
system state way nor by their suite. I have the actual files of the original
installation of wss and the SQL databases. With this in mind I uninstalled
and reinstalled the wss to re-create the sites almost from scratch. But
there were problems occuring with it telling me that the Frontpage 2002
extensions aren't installed ( although I have upgraded the site ) , the site
couldn't start and so on.
I went further and removed wss and removed/re-installed IIS but to no avail.
Bottom line is :
Having the site files and the SQL databases of the original sites , can I
import the original site in IIS and make it workable again ?
If not is there any other way , making a clean wss installation , to restore
the old wss data ? What the client is more interested in is the actual files

Hi,
in a document library i have all correct icons for all Office-documents. If
I upload a pdf-file I don't have the correct icon that corresponds with
pdf-files. In fact is the sort of icon that windows shows when it doesn't now
the corresponding software.

ssl a bad idea?
i have been running wss 2.0 on w2k3 web edition for about a year now and on 1
of the sites i have a 1024bit ssl cert. to protect against sniffers and etc .
but it slows down the loading of pages. There is a need for security but if
possible can the ssl only used on the login session and then the rest of the
site normal?

Display list from another SharePoint server
Hello,
I am able to display information on a site from another site on the same
server, using FrontPage (data source catalog).
Where I am stuck is when I try to do it from another site which is not on
the same server. I can add the site from the other server to my catalog, but
it won't display the lists.

Migrating a Lotus Notes Application to the Microsoft Platform
Hi All,
I am about to migrate a lotus notes application to the Microsoft Platform. I
am currently targeting InfoPath 2003 and Windows SharePoint Services 2003 to
accomplish this critical mission, but I am running into some issues:
- In the Notes application main form, there are dialog boxes being shown for
selecting data. There is limitation in passing data from InfoPath form to
pop up screens. Would using Web Part be better to overcome InfoPath
limitations?
- While submitting the form, there are rules by which decision is made to
sent a mail or not. Would this require workflow functionality in SharePoint?
- In Lotus Notes, sending mail functionality is embedded in the form while
InfoPath would require components such as CDONTS, Outlook Clientâ?¦
- On top of all these, my customer has acknowledged that they prefer a pure
.Net solutionâ?¦Has anybody migrated a Lotus application to .Net? If so what is
your experience? What is the advantage of using InfoPath/WSS over pure .Net
solution?

WSS Installation problem, please help!
I know that windows authentication is 'recommended' when using SQL server for
a WSS configuration, but is it possible to use SQL authentication? I am
trying to install WSS on an existing win2003 server running SQL 2000 SP3. I
installed WSS using remotesql=yes and since it completed I haven't been able
to log into the central adminstration page. Initialy I was being prompted 3
times and then kicked to the error page. I found a thread about the pool
account requiring write access to the Temp ASP NET folder and granted those
rights. Now I simply get 'Service Unavailable'. I have tried using the
account that was used to install WSS, a newly created domain account, and a
local account. I can start the StsAdminAppPool and it will fail each time I
try to access the site again. I am not sure if I need to do somthing in SQL
Enterprise Manager to allow for the creation of the DB's, could that be what
I am overlooking? Each time the pool fails I get the following error in event
viewer:
A failure was encountered while launching the process serving application
pool 'StsAdminAppPool'. The application pool has been disabled.
I have been searching and reading threads in this newsgroup all day but to
no avail. I think at this point I have thouroughly confused myself reading
posts that cause me to search for more and more clues. I am new to WSS and

Connectable WebParts & Limitations
Here is a scenario,
I have a webpart that Implements IRowProvider and ICellProvider, and I have
another webpart with which I would like to consume both of these providers.
But as soon as the consumer webpart consumes one of the providers, it will
no longer allow me to consume another provider. Is a webpart not allowed to
consume more than one provider event from another webpart instance?

Export custom events list
I'm still getting spun up on WSS. I've been tasked with taking a very
granular calendar with many events with item level permissions from our
sharepoint site and somehow producing either a web page that can be viewed in
our company intranet sites or some form of a data source that can then be

Installing ProjecServer and Sharepoint 2.0 on VMware Virtual
I have installed Sharepoint and Project server several times on standalone
server, and have followed the readme and install process with detail.
however this time on a VMware server once the installation completes, it
won;t let me login to the Admin interface.
anyone ever install this on a VMWARE or have had issues on completion of the
installation logging in and finishing the setup and install?

Upgraded to .Net 2.0 and WSS sotes do not load
One of the developers upgraded the server to .Net 2.0 and didn't ask if they
could. Now all the WSS sites do not work. I get the Following Error:

Migrating MSDE to SQL on Current WSS
I have followed the SharePoint Admin directions for moving the site.
They don't work. I found directions on How to change the application
pool identity which worked a little better but when I change the
application pool identitiy to a domain admin account I can no longer
access the SharePoint site. If I don't change the application pool and
leave that to network services I can't connect to the remote DB? Does

2007 Search Not Working
Hi!
Seem to have a problem with searching using WSS 2007. Our Central Admin
Site is running on port 60000. If I create a new site on that same port,
searching works fine. We have set up some other sites under port 8080. I
can't get searching to work for these sites. Does not fail.... comes back
with no results found. I know with the Portal Services, you can configure
where you want it to crawl for the search indexing. Are we dealing with a
limitation of WSS here? Do all sites need to be created on the same port as
the Central Admin? Do we have to go to the Portal Services to get searching
to work on a different port?

Calculated column in list fails when item is edited
I have a to-do list that has a job# column which is calculated based on the
ID column (it concatenates the ID number to other text to create a 5 digit
number with leading zeros using IF statements).
Anyway, when data from any column is edited, the calculated column value
changes as if it can't read the ID column. Opening the Change Column page
for the calculated column and clicking OK without making any changes fixes
the calculation, but this has to be done any time a value is edited.
Is there something that can be done to change/work around this?

Site Expiration, non-usage question
Hi,
I was wondering how wss determines if a site has or has not been used in n
days. Is there a field in the db that can be queried to see when the last
time the site was accessed? I can find a content last modified date.
We have wss & sps 2003 and many users are receiving notifications that their
sites are going to expire even though they are in use nearly every day. The
site expiration and auto-deletion is turned on.

Making backup of a page in Frontpage
Hi, I've recently made some changes to my Dispform.aspx page in Frontpage but
before I made the changes I made a backup of the page (called
Dispform_bak.aspx)
Now, when I click a List item in my Sharepoint List I am directed to the
backup copy of the page (so the url is:
http://chillout/sites/RecSales/Lists/SinglesSalesNotes/DispForm_bak.aspx?ID=12)
Does anyone know why this has happened and how I can make the URL change
back to Dispform.aspx? I've already tried opening Dispform_bak.apsx and
saving it back as Dispform.apsx (hoping this would reverse the problem) but
it hasn't worked.

Opening SharePoint docs within IE
I am having a problem with SharePoint Services. What i would like, is
for users to click on the document (via the doc name) and open up
within IE instead of in the appropriate Office program (eg Word 2003,
Excel 2003).
I have adjusted settings so that .doc and .xls files are supposed to
open in the IE window by have the 'Browse in same window' option
ticked, so in theory, every document i click on should open in IE where
changes cannot be made or saved to the document.
I have tried a link on Shauna Kelly's website
(http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/sharing/OpenDocInIE.html) which
enables me to test that the settings are correct. With the 'Browse in
same window' option ticked, it opens in same window (as expected) and
when it's unticked it opens within the Office application (as
expected).
These settings do not seem to work within WSS, which seems strange. Is
there a global WSS setting that prevents docs opening within IE?

WSS and Macintosh
Hello,
I have to implement sharepoint for my company, the design company has
all macintosh pcs and after various tests they could only access
sharepoint via remote desktop protocol. The proposed solution is the
following:
1- download files to rdp, then copy the file to mac
2- edit the file
3- upload the file back

Installing Sharepoint Services
Hi there,
I am trying to install SPS on my W2K3 domain controller, I would like to
keep my Default web page as is, (used for OWA) or if there is a better way
please inform me. Every time I install SPS it resets my IIS and OWA doesn't
work, I have tried to create a new web site but still doesn't work, after the
installation the SPS page wants to open but request a user name and password,
does matter what I use I can't log in. I can seem to find a descent document
on the installation, Could any one please assest me with this, I would
