    - File override in document libraries Is there a way to prevent users from overriding files that already exist in a document library? I want my users to be able to upload new files to a document library but, if the library already contains a file with that name, I do not want the users to be able to override (delete) them. The default behaviour (with versioning turned off) of WSS is to override the existing file without any warning. This is a very simple request (it exists in any file system) and I'm surprised that it is not implemented by default in WSS. Is there any way to prevent this behaviour or at least to make WSS generate a warning message asking if the user wants to override the file ? Any help would be much appreciated.     - Easy way to clean up a survey? Hiya! We have several surveys, which now needs to be emptied of all the responses for year 2005. Would there be an easier way of deleting the responses then doing it one by one? Could this be done in frontpage? I am aware of that one solution would be to make a template of the survey without the content. Just curious if anyone found another solution.     - Calendar view events not displayed issue Hi We are seeing the issue described below in a previous post. Does anyone know if this has been fixed and if so how? Apparently is was reported to MS as a bug. Thanks Mike "I have two calendar lists that are being displayed in calendar view on a Web Part Page. Both calendars are populated with several events. When the Web Part Page is loaded, the calendar view defaults to the current month. For example, the current date is March 3, 2005, so both calendar views default to display the month of March. When I click the "<" and ">" on one of the calendar view, the page refreshes to load a new month for both calendars views. For example, with the above case, if I click "<", the month of Februray will load. If I click ">", the month of April will load. Now here is the weird part. When the page reloads to display a new month, events that should appear do not show up at all for ONE of the calendar views. In other words, If "February" is being viewed, one of the calendar views will be empty, even though I know events have been entered for the month of February. The other calendar view works as intended... with its events being displayed when the month changes. When I remove the calendar that is working as intended from the Web Part page, the calendar with the event rendering problem is able to display all events as intended, regardless of what month is shown. When I re-add the calendar that was removed earlier, the calendar view that was fixed just a second ago exhibits the event rendering problems again. When I view these calendar views on their own page (for eg. http://server/sites/SiteName/Lists/Calendar/Calendar.aspx), both calendar views display all events as intended regardless of which month is being displayed. When both calendar web parts are displayed on the same Web Part page, but are not in calendar view, they both display events as intended. Any ideas on what is happening here?     - Custom Paging in DataView web part connected to Stored procedure. Hi. I have the following scenario in sharepoint development. I need some help in resolving the issue. Scenario : There is a filter control(set of drop downs and textboxs . Ex "FirstName" "Equals" "Sam") implemented in form web part. These drop downs are directly bound to parameters of the stored procedure of dataview webpart using the webpart connection. I want to enable the custom Paging on the DataView webpart connected to the stored procedure. The Paging technique is implemented in the stored procedure. one additional parameter is passed to the stored procedure as Location="Form(__EVENTARGUMENT)" Because when the user clicks on Next or Start button from DVWP, the event is fired and the below value is received as parameter to the SP. Here RowLimit is additional data added by me for the click of Next in DVWP. "dvt_firstrow={4};StartPosition={};RowLimit={3}". the dvt_firstrow and RowLimit is used in the stored procedure to implement the paging. In ideal condition I am able to navigate from one page to another. There are two issues involved in this method. 1. After navigating to second page if we change the filter condition and click on Find, same old row numbers are displayed below the data grid in DVWP. The row number does not get reset. 2. Is it possible to find which is the last page in this method. I am unable to distinguish the last or intermediate page as the paging is implemented in stored procedure.     - Setting user unique default view in same list We have a WSS list that has a number of views. Basically, it lists our companies job tasks, assigned to individual users, with a specific field "Assigned to" being a lookup against the WSS site members. The default view on the list is filtered to show jobs assigned to the user logged in i.e. 'Assigned to [me]'. We have a number of rooms where the tasks are shared between the occupants of the room. I have set up views for the individual rooms, basically filtering the tasks by the rooms occupant i.e. if Room A has User1 and User2 in it, the filter is something like Show 'Assigned to [User1] OR Assigned to [User2]' etc. What I now would like to do is have a different default view for each room. I.e. User1 and User2 are in RoomA, User3 and User4 are in RoomB, Users 1 and 2 need only to see those tasks assigned to any user in Room A, and Users 3 and 4 need only to see those tasks assigned to any user in Room B - User1 and User2 have RoomA as their Default View, User3 and User4 have RoomB as their Default View.     - strange problem with calculated field in issues list Hello, Happy New Years! I have an issues list where I've created a calculated field called 'Close Date'. Here is the formula I created for it: =IF(AND(Status="Closed",CloseDateOG=""),Modified,IF(AND(Status="Closed",CloseDateOG<>""),CloseDateOG,"")) The way it works is, if a user closes an issue by setting the 'Status' field to 'Closed', the 'Close Date' field is filled in with the 'Modified' date. 'CloseDateOG' is text field where users used to be allowed to manually fill in the 'Close Date' which led to dishonest closed dates, which is why I changed it. The problem I have is unpredictable. Today I looked at the list and the 'Close Date' field was showing values of '12/30/1899'. When I looked at the actual formula of the field it was set to '=12/25/2005'.     - Survey Response Issues Hi, I'm having a strange issue with permissions on a WSS survey. It is set with anonymous access for Add & View. It also has item-level permissions set for "Only their Own" for both read and edit access, and users are only allowed to respond once. However, SOME users (its sporadic) can respond more than once (these are readers with anonymous access only), and even though I have item-level security set for only their own, they can see the other responses. These users have read access only. Why does it seem to work correctly sometimes, and not others? Do I have something setup in the permissions wrong? I appreciate any help you can give on this topic!     - Web Discussion alerts no longer working for htm web pages We upgraded to WSS 2.0 and can no longer subscribe to htm pages (or site folders). It appears we can only "subscribe" to documents and SharePoint specific web pages (lists, discussion boards...). While the documentation says alerts didn't change the subscription feature much, this appears to be far from actuality. Prior to upgrading to WSS v2.0, we were using the subscription feature for review htm pages (which were part of a help file). We were able to subscribe to the overall folder that held the very large help file and get notified when any discussion were added on any topic. This was an extermely useful way to review help files. Previously the help would be converted to word docs that were hundreds of pages long (each topic being a page or more). Not something we want to regress back to. We can still do web discussions on this content, but we can't tell what recently changed. The "manage web discussions" option can show you what has discussions within a given folder (so we know what help topics have discussions), but we can't tell which are recent. Subscriptions allowed us to know exactly what recently changed. Questions: Is there anyway to get alerts to work the way subscriptions used to for web discussions? Specifically, is there some way to be alerted when discussions are added/changed for a location like "http://sharepointserver_site/Online_SDKs/ProductName_SDK_1-8/", which contains pages like: http://sharepointserver_site/Online_SDKs/ProductName_SDK_1-8/About_this_SDK.htm; http://sharepointserver_site/Online_SDKs/ProductName_SDK_1-8/How_activate.htm ; http://sharepointserver_site/Online_SDKs/ProductName_SDK_1-8/Activation_types.htm If there isn't a way to do this anymore, then is there some way to do a web discussion on a chm file (which we have been unable to do, which is why we went with the htm method discribed above)? Failing the ability to do the above options, is there any other way to get this to work and still use Sharepoint (per web discussion help, the subscription method would still work if we did not use Sharepoint)?     - Sharepoint migration question I am trying to migrate sharepoint from one server to another, as we want to use the new server exclusively for sharepoint. The problem is that when I run the backup.fwp file on the new server through smigrate.exe it doesn't do anything except open and then close a few seconds later. However, if I run it on the older server it works fine. I am thinking this is because the new server does not have frontpage installed on it, and the .fwp on the backup file is a frontpage extension. Can anyone verify that this is the reason I am having the problem, and if so how can I solve the problem without having to purchase frontpage for the new server? If this is not the problem, what is?     - Metadata wiped out in web properties of Office documents The deleted metadata probably cannot be retrived so this is more of a warning. I had a column with a drop-drown list modified in the "Modify Settings and Columns>Choice>Drop-down" manner. After assigning this metadata in this way for about 1200 documents, it was determined to change the way the drop-down was populated to Lookup method referring to a Sharepoint list which maintained the contents of the list. This was done to control the ability of users needing to modify only one of the metadata columns but not all of them. Unfortunately, when I went to change the metadata type to Lookup instead of Choice, Lookup was no longer in the list. So I deleted the Choice list and created a new column using the Look-up method. It not only blanked out the metadata in that column but also in the Web Properties of each document in the library; causing me to have to manually re-enter the metadata in that column for over 1200 documents. I could understand if the metadata in the view for that library went blank but I never expected it to wipe clean the metadata stored in the web properties of each document in the library.     - Estranged "Enter Network Password" Dialog box WSS 2.0 Site 2 yrs running and never had this problem before. One user out of around 120 receives the "Enter Network Password" dialog box when accessing a nonrestricted document library on the current site. Stranger is that the user can click cancel on the dialog box and proceed without filling in any information. Active Directory seems OK and she does not get the dialog on any of the sub-sites.     - WSS Display Folder/File Content I have a question/problem. First, I tried using the Page Viewer Web Part to display folder content for a network folder, and it worked, but it only stayed in the Web Part's frame for XP clients...on a Windows 2000 machine if I double-clicked one of the folders within that Page Viewer Web Part, it would then take over the whole web page, turning it into a Windows Explorer view. So then, I decided I'd try to just manually throw in the links to documents/folders on the default page for a site instead of using a web part...which is fine, but if there is something new added to the folder I wouldn't know unless I checked for new content, and then I'd have to add that to the site. This brought me to looking for a script that displayed the file/folder contents of a folder on the network so that if anything is added, it will automatically appear on the links. I've found a few ASP scripts that claim to do this, but when I try to paste them into the code of the default.aspx pages, nothing appears in the browser as far as the script goes (as if it doesn't run).     - Searching in Sharepoint (Sharepoint vs. Wiki) Sorry for the crosspost, but I think I posted this question in the wrong forum yesterday. I work in a small development team and I've been trying to set up some means of centralized documentation for internal use only. It's not meant to be just a collection of Word documents but also a web site that anyone can browse and edit. I've set up both Sharepoint and MediaWiki to compare the pros and cons of each. The main drawback for me with Sharepoint is that you cannot search into web parts. I basically figured out that the best way to implement an editable web page in Sharepoint (as you would in MediaWiki) is to use the Content Editor Web Part and make it the full page size. Then you get a limited, though WYSIWYG, editor. Unfortunately you cannot search on anything you write in the web part. For this reason, MediaWiki seems more appropriate for us. Is there anything I'm missing about Sharepoint and searching before I settle on MediaWiki? Will Sharepoint ever be updated in this regard? Thanks.     - issues with events and datasheet view I have a user interested in performing all edits in datasheet view in an events calendar. There are many reoccurring events. They are insistent in this endeavor. I've tried to research a solution without being able to solve unless each reoccurring event is first edited by assigning a custom title to each in the edit item view or some other field that will create a separate entry into the database. Then each item appears as a single entry (sometimes a double entry) able to be edited in datasheet view without affecting each reoccurring event.     - Lists Web Service gives 401.5 error: HTTP Error 401.5 - Unauthorized: Authorization failed by an ISAPI/CGI application I have a single server with Sql Server and IIS and WSSv2 on it, as well as Project Server. The configuration for IIS and WSS is roughly this: Port 80: Default web site Port 81: WSS Port 83: Project Server All of this works fine, Project can create WSS sites, WSS functions fine, and custom apps installed on the default web site are working fine too. I've gone and created a Web Service on the port 81 site that loops through the WSS sites that Project Server created. These are standard WSS sites that have simply been created using the Project WSS Template. . . that is to say, there is nothing special about Lists.asmx on a Project Site. The query to fetch all of the WSS Project Sites provides us with the Server Name, Server Port, Site and Subweb Name. What I'm seeing is that any attempt to call the web service results in the 401.5 error indicating an ISAPI Authentication Error. Of course, WSS does use ISAPI in the WSS ISAPI plugin, which is required to intercept and understand requests made to a Sharepoint site.     - Problem with new Sharepoint installation I just installed Windows Sharepoint Services on a Win 2003 server (actually as a precursor to installing the BTS 2006 Beta). When I went to "localhost" in IE, I got a message that said "Service Unavailable", noticed that StsAppPool1 had stopped, and I saw the following error in the system log: The application-specific permission settings do not grant Local Activation permission for the COM Server application with CLSID {A9E69610-B80D-11D0-B9B9-00A0C922E750} to the user NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE SID (S-1-5-20). This security permission can be modified using the Component Services administrative tool. The guid belongs to IIS Admin, so I changed the default launch and activation permissions for COM Security to include the account that runs it, and then I changed the IIS Admin component (under DCOM Config) to use the default launch and activation permissions. ------------ Back to the present: so now I can start StsAppPool. But when I browse to localhost, now I get a challenge screen asking for username and password. If I enter the admin account, I can't get to the screen. If I hit escape, I get this: HTTP Error 401.1 - Unauthorized: Access is denied due to invalid credentials. Internet Information Services (IIS) I've tried lots of different things to get rid of the challenge screen with no luck. Any ideas?     - problem with WSS calculated field Hi ... I have a calculated field that adds 2000 to ID. When I create a new record the field value is 2000. If I go in and alter the formula and change it back ... the formula will execute and yield the proper value (say 2067). It seems to be performing the calculation before WSS has had a chance to populate the ID field in a new record. Any ideas? What I am ultimately trying to do is to create a unique identifier that starts at 2000 and increments from there on based on the last number assigned. The current tasks folder in Exchange contains approximately 25,000 records with 20 fields each.     - Problem with SPWebCollection.Add method Hi there! I need to dynamically create sub sites based on thigs happening on the top-level site. I have been writing a web part to handle this, but am running into some problems with the SPWebCollection.Add method. The error message I receive is: "Cannot convert a folder if a web template is specified.". If I use the method which only takes one parameter, I can add the sub site, the error message comes into play when I try to add the details and the template to the sub site.     - Calculations using [ID] fails Hi I'm creating a calculated field and I wanna use the ID-field as a component. So I have a formula reading something like =10000+[ID]. That works fine. First time. But when I open the page second time around it just ignores the ID-part, giving me 10000 as the result. I also note that it has removed the brackets, giving me the formula "=10000+ID" rather than the one above. Ideas anyone? I found difficulty doing this and although there is lots of documentation on the web (including Microsoft's site), none have offered a true step-by-step solution to doing this. Prerequisite knowledge You will be using the STSADM tool found on the server hosting your Sharepoint Services in: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\60\BIN\ Method 1) Ensure that your source (current WSS) server is using the latest Windows Sharepoint Services build. I found that although WSS SP2 was installed on my server the Sharpoint version was not updated. You can force the update of the service pack using the following check. To check what version of WSS you are using (described in Microsoft KB 875358) i=2E Go to your Windows Sharepoint Services Administration page (http://servername:specificPort). eg http://server1:9644 ii. Under Virtual Server Configuration select Configure virtual server settings iii. On the following page you will find a list of your websites and the version of the WSS engine used. Version numbers are as follows (correct at time of this article: 23 Nov 2005): =B7 6.0.2.5530 is the version number of the virtual server in the original release version of Windows SharePoint Services. =B7 6.0.2.6361 is the version number of the virtual server in Windows SharePoint Services Service Pack 1 (SP1). =B7 6.0.2.6411 is the version number of the virtual server in Windows SharePoint Services that has the security update installed that is described in the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base article 887981 (Vulnerability in Windows SharePoint Services and SharePoint Team Services could allow cross-site scripting and spoofing attacks) =B7 6.0.2.6568 is the version number of the virtual server in Windows SharePoint Services Service Pack 2 (SP2). To force an update of the service pack (also described in Microsoft KB 875358) Run STSADM with the following switches: stsadm -o upgrade -forceupgrade 2) Delete the default top level site on your destination (new) server. i=2E Go to your default WSS administration page (as described in 1.i above) ii. Click OK when done and do not attempt to configure the server settings further (such as adding a template) 4) Use STSADM to create a backup of your SharePoint site i=2E Use the following command on your source server: stsadm -o backup -url http://sourceserver -filename filepath example: stsadm -o backup -url http://server1 -filename C:\temp\WSSsource.dat 5) Copy the backup file to a shared resource or onto the local disk of your destination server 6) Once you have installed Windows Sharepoint Services on your destination server you will be ready to restore your Sharepooint Services data from the dat file you have saved to. i=2E Use the following command on your destination server: stsadm -o restore -url http://destinationserver -filename filepath example: stsadm -o restore -url http://server2 -filename C:\templ\WSSrouce.dat The above has been put together based on a tried and tested solution. SMIGRATE has its shortcomings when it comes to migrating a complete site, including subsites.     - Upgrading Virtual Server We're trying to upgrade a portal site in our Sharepoint services. The current version number is 6.0.2.5530. We've applied SP1 and SP2 to the server, but the version number for the Virtual Server hasn't changed. Every attempt to update it with the "stsadm.exe -o upgrade -url" command has resulted in "Cannot upgrade virutal server(s): http://portal." Currently it's running in an assigned IP and host header, but I've tried it with the default ip and no host header as well. I always run into that error. Any suggestions? I am trying to create a link document to a shared one on a Document
Workspace, I open the shared file in Word 2003 and see through the
'shared workspace' panel that is is a shared doc. I then save it to my
local harddrive, i'm not prompted to link this file to the document
workspace instead the 'shared workspace' panel changes to ask me if i
want to create a document workspace.

any ideas?
