Some at our place feel that Contributors should be able to add material to a
Site but NOT delete it from a site (They want us to strip Delete from the
Contributors role).

1. Do you agree with that view or not?

2. I presume that "Delete" only applies to items that that user created. Is
this correct?

TIA,

If you do intend to create a revised Contributors Site Group, do not
amend the existing Contributors Site Group. Instead create a new
"ContributorsNoDelete" Site Group which has the same rights as
Contributors but without delete.

When new admins come later they will expect that Contributors will have
the default settings. You may also need both options (with or without
Delete).

Typically a delete right applies for all items not just the ones the
user has created (the definition of the Contribuotrs site group includes
this definition "Delete Items - Delete items from a list, documents
from a document library, and Web discussion comments in documents." -
nothing about OWN items)

On Q1, only you can decide based on the requirements of your own sites.
I would (as above) keep both the original Contribuotrs and the revised
one and probably use both for different sets of people.
