    - User Information via XML Greetings, Does anyone know if there is a source to pull in information about a user? I want to default some fields on a form and was planning to use AJAX to lookup the information about the user, e.g. lwho their manager is. Something comparable to when you use "/_vti_bin/owssvr.dll? Cmd=Display&List={xxxx-xxx-xxx}&XMLDATA=TRUE" But to pull information about the user currently logged in, or even a specified user. Is this possible?     - Hierachry, Templates, etc. We have decided to use SharePoint 2007 for IT Network projects and I would like to get an idea of the Hierarchy of the site, or sites. Get an idea of how we can use this to our advantage. Also, just some general questions... I want to list one of our projects and then be able to list the several tasks it took to complete this. So, my question is this... 1. Is there a map that Microsoft publishes of the typical hierarchy of SharePoint2007? 2. Will we need to create a seperate "site" for each project and go about it that way? 3. How do I import templates into the 'Template Selection' of SharePoint? 4. Where can I get more templates? Admittedly I need more practice designing the pages. However I hope someone out there can lend a hand or a site with better How to's.     - noob question about restore to new server Hi, ok this might sound dumb, but here goes. i have created a test WSS3 site contaning a large amount of shared docs on a virtual server on default database, and want to move/migrate/ backup and restore it to another server as live with sql 2005. i have 2 sub sites on the team site, an IT and HR site with the HR having a large shared document library with permissions levels set. i used stsadm but couldnt restore it to the new server, but a restore onto itself went fine. i also tried the inbuilt backup from the central admin console, but that failed to restore as couldnt connect to the database. i tried to upgrade the the exist instance with SQL 2005, but refused to allow it to install to the existing instance. cheers Phil Tag: Cannot open documents on WSS 2.0 and WSS 3.0 sites - Error generat Tag: 65655

    - Can't open a list with Windows Explorer - WSS3.0 Firstly apologies if this has been dealt with - I couldn't see anything posted. I have just put two new laptops running Windows Vista Business Edition on to my network and can no longer open a list with Windows Explorer - I get the error 'Your client does not support opening this list with Windows Explorer.'     - Sharepoint mails Is there any way of sending mails with the subject modified on workflow completion in sharepoint. For example when i approve or reject a document, the approvers group gets an e-mail saying that the workflow has completed.     - Posting a flash application in a library? We have a flash application "Application.swf" wich saves the content into a xml file (save as content1.xml or content2.xml or ...). If you save a *.doc file into a library, you open the word application by simply clicking the link (title). Is it possible to post the content files (*.xml) into a library and open the falsh application "Application.swf?content1.xml" by simply clicking the link (title)?     - Admin authority but can't Send to Another Location or save a shared Hello, I'm guessing this is a setup issue or a rights issue, but I've been working on it way too long. I am listed as the System Account on the WSS3.0 server, and I have site collection owner authority on all the collections. Howerver, I clicked on a file in a shared documents library (.xsn file) chose Send To Other Location. I typed in the library path where I wanted to send it to, and it came up with a login box. I entered my credentials, but it didn't seem to like them. So, I tried the admin credentials to the server itself, and it comes up with Unable to Connect to Server error. I'm working on a similar issue with someone who wants to share a OneNote file with others. He's in OneNote, follows the steps to create a new shared workbook, enters the workspace name on the SharePoint site, and he continues to get the same error. Unable to connect. I've looked at things like the blocked extensions, and user policies, but I'm not sure what would prevent any of these actions. Does anyone have ideas for me to try?     - Help converting lists to features and retaining existing content We have a Sharepoint 2007 installation that was upgraded a few months back from 2003. We have a custom site definition (onet.xml, and several schema.xml) that is used for about 900 sites. The site def has several custom document library lists, a contacts list, and an image gallery. The lists are currently as they were in 2003, i.e. existing not as features, but as defined in the schema.xml in the folders \12\TEMPLATE\SiteTemplates\[companysite]\LISTS\[listname]. Going through all the documentation that I have found, it doesn't look too tricky to convert these lists to features. However, building the Onet.xml and the webtemp.xml correctly is looking daunting, and I am not entirely sure of the process. I am especially concerned about how to get the existing content over to the new feature-based site defintions. How is this done? Do I need to use the Contnent Migration API or something? Obviously I don't have a clear picture of the process! Thanks for any help in clarifying this process for me.     - Newbie question - dev box Newbie question ... just ordered ms-SD 2007 and awaiting it's arrival.... Do I create new webs on my PC (where ?) and do I need to install/start any additional services ? ...or should I create new sites on the WSS 3.0 server directly ? Played with the trial version of MS-SD but I can't get it to open a page or create a new 'local' website....     - Can't Upload in IE on WSS 3.0 We have an external WSS 3.0 site where users are supposed to be uploading various documents. In testing, users seem to be having problems in uploading when using IE. I tested myself from an external connection. When I try uploading a 15mb rtf file with IE 7, it waits for a while then tells me I'm no longer connected. When I try using Firefox, it works just fine. I've followed the kb article on how to allow large file uploads by adjusting the timeout in IIS, update the _layouts/web.config and the web.config of the web application but it makes no difference. Has anyone run into such a problem or have suggestions on what else to look at? It almost seems like an issue with IE since it works fine in Firefox, but I can't find any settings in IE that make any difference. Any help would be appreciated.     - Write error on file "_themes/Obsidian" I have currently done an upgrade on my sharepoint farm from 2003 to 2007. All is working well.. :) WOOT WOOT!!! except for one functionality. After the upgrade, myself and my users are not able to update the themes. I've validated it myself by trying this, and i made sure I picked a theme that is out of the box, as to not complicate it anymore. However, once i try to apply the theme I recieve a Write error on file "_themes/Obsidian". Has anyone seen this? I've checked all over microsofts forums to no avail..     - Thumbnail and preview not updating when new image overwriting old Not too sure if this is the right user group or not, so please don't flame me if it's wrong. I've just notice a peculiarity in our SharePoint setup, If I upload a new image with the same filename as an existing image and check the 'Overwrite existing image' check box although the file uploads ok, the thumbnail and preview do not change (those are the files that are stored in the _T and _W folders) Needless to sat this is very confusing to the end user, especially if the images in question are company logos, it looks as if it's the old logos that are still in the picture library. The simple solution is to delete the old files before uploading the new ones and this is how we will work in future, but I was wondering if this was a known issue? We are using SharePoint 2003.     - Can admin user view unpublished drafts from other users?! We have many document libraries that we have set up with required fields to be entered on upload. When one uploads a single file, Sharepoint first uploads the file and then the user is presented with a screen to complete the metadata. If they click "ok" without completing all required fields, they get the same form back in their face indicating what they missed. Nice and clear. User can't really go wrong here. However, if one uploads multiple files in one shot (i.e. "upload multiple files" from the menu), the Sharepoint interface does not force any of the metadata to be entered, leaving the file in a checked out state. It is up to the user to go to each file and set the metadata. Until this is done for each file for the required metadata, the file cannot be checked in and published. The problem is that many users who aren't familiar with this kind of workflow are inadvertently not completing the metadata tags after uploading. They think that they have completed the whole process, inform their collegues to have a look at the docs, but they cannot see any sign of them (not even showing that the files are checked out). So I thought that an admin user on the site/list with full control would be able to see these files. BUT THIS IS NOT THE CASE!!! Not even an admin user can see them. Is there any way to have these files show up for other users to see (at the very least the admin user, but really any user) and just show them as checked out? I was able to write some code that can list these unpublished drafts (see forum post http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=2878978&SiteID=17) and it was amazing the number of files that we found that users had unpublished but thought they had published and were available to others.     - permissions problem for lists saved as templates I have created a custom list in wssV3 that has some permissions changed on it from read to contribute for a group of users. The list works as expected. I then save the list as a template so that it can be added whenever it is required. Problem is the permissions for the list revert back to read rather than contribute.     - restricting users to subset of a domain My organization has a WSS site set up to support an internal group that is represented in our Active Directory by an AD Group. There doesn't seem to be a way to restrict the granting of object access to only members of that Goup. To state it another way, If someone can grant access to a resource, they can grant access to anyone in the domain, not just members of the Group. This is a serious conundrum. It seems that the people picker can be modified to use a LDAP query to populate it's pick list, by if a name is typed in, it will be looked up in the directory without restriction. Surprisingly, I can find no information on how to implement a configuration like this. Surely we can't be the only ones who have ever needed this?     - file not found or error creating directory/folder whenever one creates a folder, document library or any item, trying to access that item gives a â??file not foundâ?? error. One can see the item in the all documents list however clicking on it throws up the error. Mysteriously enough this error disappears after a random period time â?? sometimes in an hour, sometimes a day or even more. This is very strange and a irritating issue which has been happening since some time now. The problem is that it gets resolved on its own and sometimes when I just click on that URL, it gets resolved and so it is getting difficult to resolve it as it does not give any details of the error.     - Email sent from sharepoint is not accepted by sharepoint Hello All, I am running into an interesting problem. This is going to take a bit for me to explain thoroughly, but the issue is quite simple once I get the point across. I have e-mail enabled a number of libraries to accept e-mails, and it works flawlessly when e-mail is sent to these libraries from an Outlook client. I have created an InfoPath 2007 form and wish to submit forms by e-mail to one of these e-mail enabled lists. When I perform the submit, I can see the e-mail flow through exchange, get dropped off in IIS SMTP drop folder, and then get picked up by SharePoint. However it never shows up in the document library. If I CC myself on this InfoPath submit, I can then forward this e-mail from my Outlook client to the document library and the form (attached) is delivered properly. I have spent a great deal of time troubleshooting this and have been able to really narrow it down. ANY e-mail that I have generated from SharePoint will NOT be accepted by the document libraries. I have created very basic test forms in InfoPath to test this. I have also setup document library alerts and then forced them to fire by modifying documents in that library. The alerts will be delivered to my mailbox successfully and they are also picked up by SharePoint from the drop folder successfully, however SharePoint will simply not accept the message and put it into the document library. If I forward any of these messages from my Outlook client to the library, it works flawlessly. It seems to me that e-mails that are fired off by SharePoint are formatted in such a way that they are trashed on the incoming side. I have captured .eml files from the drop folder and compared them between outgoing from SharePoint and from my Outlook client, but the differences are too great to sort out. I can go on with details for a long time here, but will leave it at this for now and hope that someone can provide me with any recommendations. Also, why is there no diagnostic logging for what action is taken against incoming e-mails? It seems that they are disposed of and there is never a notification.     - Calendar Item Limit I recently upgraded from WSS 2.0 to WSS 3.0 and am now having problems with displaying a large number of items in a calendar. We use an event list to display classroom schedules. Individual views are designed to display classes held in a particular classroom. As you'd expect, we have a large number of classes in a large number of rooms. Classes are, of course, recurring events. We've been able to import this data successfully into the list with 2.0, and there are no errors generated while importing into the 3.0 upgraded version. However, on a month calendar view showing all events (not something that would be useful I know) it stops displaying after 1000 items or about 7-10 days worth of events. Only the 1st week - 10 days of the semesters classes are displayed under week or day views. On subsequent month views, similar results are seen with only 1000 events shown. Individual room views show the appropriate classes (because they don't exceed the 1000 limit?). However, clicking on any class scheduled after the first 7-10 days of the semester results in the following error: "An unexpected error has occurred. Web Parts Maintenance Page: If you have permission, you can use this page to temporarily close Web Parts or remove personal settings. For more information, contact your site administrator. Troubleshoot issues with Windows SharePoint Services." Searching for a particular class, then editing the item from that screen will work without an error as will going to 'all events' and editing the series...not the individual event. In 2.0, we bumped up against the default 100 item limit for displaying items in any given view and was able to resolve that issue as described in KB883973. In 3.0 I am unable to locate where to allow the calendar to process or display more than 1000 items. ANY help with this problem would, as always, be greatly appreciated!!     - External Users without Active Directory? Greetings, We would like to set up a WSS 3.0 site to act as a landing page for external users coming in through a security device (FirePass). However, we would prefer to do this without using Active Directory. We'll have upwards of 20,000 users registered. (Low usage though, so don't cringe!). I assume, and I could be wrong, that there would be a huge licensing cost associated with that many users in A/D. Currently we are exploring an option using ADAM for authentication (and yes, we have run into the need for a .NET component to allow for the new provider... separate issue.) My questions is... well, is there a better way? Is there an easier system to allow for non-anonymous usage of a WSS 3.0 site, without having A/D involved? Any thoughts would be welcome. Odd Note: When creating a new alert, wen I click the OK button, the alert creatin web page progress bar never moves past %50 complete. I can walk away for hours and the page doesn't clear. The alert is created but not honored. WHAT I've tried is to remove and reinstalled SMTP service, configure it to use my ISP as the smart host, used my ISP mail account name and password. I tested using Telnet commands and all email goes out to my ISP mail server and comes back to my Outlook 2007 inbox. Alerts and new user notifications won't work on any of my 6 WEB applications.     - Problems with Sharepoint 2007 Central Administration (File not found) Hi, I am having a serious problem with my central admin site. When I open it, I get the default.aspx page, with the correct layout and everything, but there is a message saying "Error" and then "File not found". Then there is just a link to the "Troubleshooting" which is completely worthless. There is nothing about which file is not found, and no other clues. I have tried installing the Service Pack, I have tried repairing the installation. NB! This is a totally clean installation, the only thing I have done after the clean installation is importing a previously created content site. There is no error in the event viewer.     - WSS 3.0 not using a database ? hello, WSS stores all the documents (word, excel, etc.) in a database. is it possible to set it up in a way that it to stores documents as individual files in a known folders structure ? Incident Description: The attached error is presented each time I try and
access a document stored on SharePoint. Error message "iexplorer.exe -
application error. The instruction at "0x30cb0d38" referenced memory at
"0x00000". The memory could not be "written." Click on OK to terminate the
program.

I have tried accessing different documents on different sites but the same
error exists.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
