    - Domain Users can not open the Homepage from Sharepoint? Hi, our Domain Users can not open the Homepage from the Sharepoint Services allways pop ups a logon dialog !?? Other Pages, Sites and so can be opened directly via link...? www.mysite.com // not possible to open for the user www.mysite.com/Site1 // User can open without any problems www.mysite.com/Site1/Next_Level_Site // User can open without any problems The Pages and the Websites under the root inherits the accesslevel from the top page (homepage) I have given the Domain Users group (DOMAIN\Domain-Users) read access and the domain admins the administrator access to the sharepoint. If i insert the user with his domain name in the acl (DOMAIN\USER) that also doesnt work.     - Search engine failure We have a number of WSS sites running for around 5 months which are pretty much out-of-the-box with a little customisation in terms of colours, banners etc. We've just received a report that the search engine has ceased to work, it doesn't find anything whatever keywords are entered.     - wsus and sharepoint on same server I have a windows 2003 box running wsus succesfully on the default web site. Once I install sharepoint on this server, wsus stops working. I have granted anonymous access to the appropriate sites within the default and I also added the correct exemptions within the sharepoint administration console per the Microsoft pages I found. Wsus appears to now work, except I can't get in the wsus admin page http://servername/wsusadmin.......I get a page cannot be found! Thus I can't administer wsus......HELP!!!     - Inserting Internet Search bar I have researched and found 2 different internet search bars that I have inserted into Sharepoint Services. The second through Frontpage 2003 that is a MSN search bar. The problem I have had with both is when you type in your internet search words and hit enter it refreshes my weather add-in. You can manually use the mouse to click search but you can't hit enter on the keyboard. Any ideas? And does anyone know of any different internet search add-ins?     - Unable to create site. I keep getting the following error while trying to create a new site: The virtual server was extended with Windows SharePoint Services, but the following error occurs in creating the default site "http://dev-smk-wss/". Please correct the input and try to create the default site again. Error: Cannot complete this action. This is a fresh installation of Windows Server 2003 in a test domain (inside 2 virtual PCs). The first virtual PC has AD running on it. The second virtual PC has SQL Server 2005 and Windows SharePoint Services 2003 SP2 installed on it. I have just completed the installation of SQL and WSS. SQL server is running. The AppPool user has the appropriate permissions in SQL Server (Security Administrator and DB Creator). I can find no other data in the logs or event viewer to indicate what failed. The Site DB is created on the SQL server. Any idea what is causing this error or how I can fix it?     - Virtural Server Administration Help Hello, My Microsoft SharePoint websites a working great. But I needed to add a new user to the virtural server and when I tried to log onto the Microsoft SharePoint Administrator to add the user I was unable to do so. It did not except my user name and password. This is the same username and password that I have used in the past. I am also able to use this user name and password to log into the website.     - permissions Ok, I am struggling with understanding permissions. If I want only users A and B to be able to edit docs in a shared library and want only users C and D to be able to edit files in a different Shared library, then is my only choice to setup different Workspaces where these libraries reside?     - Privilege issues Iâ??m pretty new to SharePoint. I have installed it in 3 different virtual machines, and on one standalone server. Finally had it installed on a networked server. For the first time, I am having what I believe are security issues. I can not create cross site groups. I have some pages I just created that donâ??t have the â??modify this pageâ?? show up. I have some pages where I can browse for a web part, but not get to the create menu. To my knowledge, I am a local admin on the server, and have admin right on the sql server. I have tried setting the SharePoint admin group to me and to a group containing me. I donâ??t have these issues on any of the other standalone installs I have done. Can someone help me out?     - Update request on stsadm -o deletesite Good Morning, I'm having a problem deleting my wss site using the stsadm -o deletesite command. I searched the group and found several year-old discussions about it. When I run the command: stsadm -o deletesite -url http://localhost I get the message: There is no Web named "/" This has just recently started and coincidently my site has just recently grown past the 500MB mark. I have applied SP2, and all of the information I've seen from Microsoft seems to indicate that they would include the HotFix in SP 2 - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/888505/ But it certainly hasn't fixed my problem. So I'm wondering, do I need to email M$ and give them $100 to get this HotFix, or is there a better way? All I want to do is delete my site on my redundant server and restore the latest backup to it.     - Save PDF to Shared Documents Hello, How can I save a PDF File to the Sharepoint Server? I visited a web page on the Internet and clicked on a link to download a small PDF Brochure that loaded into my Web Browser. Normally I would click "Save A Copy" and save the document to a network folder. However, when I pick "Shared Documents on MySharePointServer", NONE of my usual foldes are visible at all.     - upgrading from WMSDE to SQL 2005 problem hi to all Win2k3 SP1, all updates AD, no account self creation, domain controller All updates fro SharePoint services also When I was upgrading, I was following MS WindowsSharePointServicesAdmin.chm. Section Migrating from WMSDE to SQL Server 2005. Everything was going smooth, till the point: Extend a virtual server 7. In the Security Configuration section, select NTLM, and then click OK. Note Do not close SharePoint Central Administration, because you will need it in the next procedure. After the virtual server is extended, the next step is to add the restored content databases.     - Calculated fields without weekends I know this is a long-shot, but is there anyway of removing weekends within a calculated field? I have two dates, e.g 23/03/2006 (Begin Date) and 27/03/2006 (End Date) My calculated field finds out how long the process took [End Date] - [Begin Date] = 4 days. The only problem is dates 25 & 26 were at the weekend and no-one was undertaking any tasks so the task took only 2 days to complete rather than 4.     - Moving from one server to two Our present sharepoint installation consists of WSS and SQL Server 2000 on one box. Due to growth, we need to separate them. After I install SQL Server on the new box, how do I point the existing sharepoint to the new server? I found documentation about going from MSDE to SQL Server, but not SQL Server to SQL Server.     - SharePoint Searching Hello, We are looking at setting up either SharePoint Services, or a Portal Server, for a number of reasons. What I'd like to know, is, can either of them search inside exchange mailboxes? Currently our uses use Google desktop search to find information from local drives, network drives, and their exchange mailbox. As SharePoint can do indexing and searching of data, I was wondering if there was some way that you could point it to a server share, exchange mailbox, and any other resource, and get it to index & search those resources?     - FrontPage Extensions 2002 not running correctly on default website I have inherited a problem. I have a MS Web Server 2003 operating with IIS 6.0 and Sharepoint Services. There is one web site running as the default in its default location. I have extended Frontpage Extensiosn to the default website so that this website can use them. I cannot "connect" using Frontpage to this site. The IP address I use to setup my network connection to this server is the same IP address that I use to view my website. The website is vieweable and I can FTP so I know that the IP issues are free and clear. The error I get when I try to upload or connect is "You do not have permission to access this network place location." Also, when I try to "Administer" the website using the Sharepoint Admin portal, I get a similar error. I can't add roles, etc.. "You are not authorized to view this page You do not have permission to view this page using your current user account. Please try the following: If you have another user account with a higher level of permission, click your browser's Back button to try again using that account. If you believe you should be able to view this page, contact the Web site administrator." I can access the Administration page for the SharePoint Services and make basic configuration changes. I am not running Routing or Remote Access services. This is a straight up server with SQL, Perl and .ASP enabled or installed. Other than that, I have no other history with the server.     - SharePoint vs Websphere Portal Hi, We're looking at implementing a Portal product, I personally would like to implement Microsoft SharePoint services, or Portal Server 2003, as we're running Windows Server 2003 Active Directory, Live Comms Server 2005, Exchange 2003, and ISA 2004. Plus all our Clients are XP Pro. So it just makes sense to keep everything Microsoft Based for compatibility & support. However my manager is trying to push Websphere Portal, and I need to come up with some reasons why SharePoint is better. But the only case studies I can find are on the Microsoft site, which won't really carry any weight with him. I could do with some hard facts, as to why SharePoint is superior, something like; "SharePoint can handle 10,000 more connections" or "SharePoint runs 200% faster" would be nice!     - Content Database Dilemma Hi All, We are going to deploy Windows SharePoint Services in our company and I am having problem deciding the best method to design the web sites and content databases. My initial plan is to let each department owns a website. They can have as many subsites within their own website. I plan to use "Server Farm Scalable Hosting Mode" so that all webistes will share a single IP address. However, when I looked at how to manage the Content Database, I am lost. Belows are what I wish to achieve: 1) Each department will have a quote on the website (e.g. 200GB). 2) Keep the Content Database size to 25GB When I at looked at the manage content database, I notice that I can only set the maximum number of sites for a content database. It seems like the maximum number of sites refers to top level sites and does not include subsites. If this is true, then I might have a problem. For example, if I create 3 websites and set the content database maximum number of sites to 9 (25 divide 3) and each website to have 200GB quote. Each website can continue to create subites, upload docuements until they reached their 200GB limit because there are only 3 websites as far as the Content Database is concern. This will make the Content Database 600GB by then. I am not sure is my conclusion correct so I hope that someone can enlighten me. Why adding though WSS admin account (through Site settings and Manage users), remote wss contributor (users) might fail with error message "The user doesn't exist" To work around it I have to enter user first through SBS Mange Users, which doesn't seem to be correct. 2. When I go to SBS Manage users, the default new user is with access rights to local server. Wizard doesn't have an option for remote wss users. How to configure new wss contributor account? Where and what rights remote wss contributor have to be entered first, so that wss admin can add contributor level users without this error message?     - Uploading a template Hi, I have downloaded "Help desk dashboard" template at my local machine. I have WSS and SPS running on my virtual machine. I want to add this downloaded template to upload in my WSS so that I can use that. I have followed the steps to upload that template and the two files for that ARE uploaded but when i click on those files, I am asked to save those somewhere. I have saved these but how can I see the new uploaded template in WSS default home site. I am unable to open these uploaded files. These are .stp files.     - Problems with Document Library Lookup Columns/Fields when Moving D Here is the situation: I have two SharePoint sites open in two Internet Explorer windows. Both windows are to the Explorer View for Document Libraries on two separate SharePoint sites. I can successfully drag and drop the documents from the Explorer View in one library into the Explorer View in the other site library. Both libraries have a column called "owner" which is a lookup column that looking into the User Information table and displays the Display Name. On each library this field is optional (not required). The default value is blank. Here is the problem: After moving the documents I noticed that the "owner" field in the new library does not contain the same name that was displayed as the owner in the previous library (even if the same name is available in the owner field list of the new library). Example: Old site Owner field = Bill Gates ... move docs .... New site Owner field = George Bush But there is yet another catch: Even if the old site Owner field is blank (because it is an optional field), when I move the docs to the new site, the docs will get a new owner. Example: Old site Owner field = <blank> ... move docs ... New site Owner field = John Moore This is weird since the Owner field on the new site is not required and there is no default value (blank) so the entry is blank unless you select someone from the list.     - Error on Sharepoint Doc lib : Please help This form is not available for this list, discussion board, survey, or document library. We are getting an error when trying to "view the properties" of files in a document library. It states: "This form is not available for this list, discussion board, survey, or document library. " The only change that was made was that the doclib was orginally setup without content approval and when content approval was turned on this error appeared. Anyone has a fix please advise, since the support documentation from Microsoft only points to recreating a new library and moving the files over. This is not possible for us due to the sheer size of the library and the number of documents contained in it.     - Advanced Survey I want to create an advanced survery. By advanced I mean a survey where the answers to questions relate to weighted scores, and these scores combine to form the final score. Obviously the built in survey does not provide for this. I began attempting to create a list to do it, but the questions are too long for it to look right. Does anyone know of a good survey web part that will allow me to create an advanced survey? My suspicion is that the best way to do this is either through Infopath (which we don't want to use) or through development.     - retrieving data from lists in other WSS sites We are running WSS (not portal). I am trying to put together a project management type site. What I have so far is a top level site, I'll call the RELEASE_Site. It has a LIST webpart that contains all of the software feature in a given release. The fields in the LSIT are Feature_ID Feature_Name Eng_Mgr Test_Mgr Milestone1 (date) Milestone2 (date) ... Milestone5 (date) Feature_Homepage (URL) Each of the features has a link to a MeetingWorkspace that is being used as the Feature home page. (I did this so I could have access to the TABBED pages feature that only meeting workspaces have). Each TAB represents a different department (Eng, Functional Test, Stress TEst, etc) On each of the tabs I have placed a common Schedule (EVENT webpart) which has various tasks and the corresponding milestone dates. I am looking to get the milestone dates from the Feature home pages, to be automatically populated in the LIST webpart on the upper Release_Site, so the project managers dont have to enter the data multiple times.     - Creating new default.aspx in top-level Web site I have a top level web site running WSS already populated and ready to go. As an after thought, I decided to insert a Sharepoint splash page before getting to the main Sharepoint default page. After users get to the splash page they can them click a link to enter the main sharepoint site where their credentials will be checked. How can I do this? Within a sub web, I was able to re-name default.aspx something else and create a generic splash page named default.aspx with the link to what used to be the default page.     - Accessing faxes thru Sharepoint At the risk of getting a reply stating to post this in the SBS newsgroup (which I have and was directed to post it here)...... Current setup: SBS 2003 Premium w/SR1 I have configured incoming faxes to route to a document library on sharepoint. When a user tries to view the fax through Incoming Faxes on companyweb on client computer, they only can see/print the first page (usually the cover page) of the fax when they try to view it from Sharepoint. So far, I can only get the fax to view/print all pages by doing that from the server. Is it even possible for a user to access a received fax, via Sharepoint and view all the pages in them, or is it required that the server first print the fax then have someone distribute it to the correct person?     - Site Template Disaster and HUGE error report... Help! I have finally gotten my company to give SharePoint a fair shake, and now I may have a crippled site. I was working on a SharePoint site yesterday and ran into a problem that I have never seen before. I went to save the site as a template and received this error: Read error on file "_catalogs/wt/SiteTemplate1.stp". I cannot create site templates from anywhere on the site. I am using WSS only. I can still create list templates. I also cannot create a site based on templates that I created when I was able to, but I can create sites based on the default site templates. I have another site setup on another virtual server on the same box, and I can create the templates. So this looks to be site specific. I need to fix this. I hope someone knows what I can do.     - Backups of WSS files I use WSS on a single server (running SBS 2003). If, as currently, I am doing a daily backup, into a single backup file, of the entire contents of the server's hard drive, does this mean that all of the WSS files (including uploaded documents etc.) are thus also backed up and can be restored if needed?     - Uploading a template Hi all, I have downloaded help desk template on my machine. Now I want to upload multiple files (two files) in WSS to create this help desk site on my virtual machine running WSS. I am not able to upload multiple files and when I try to save and close after uploading this new template, nothing happens. I am not able to see this new template in the existing list of templates. Hi

I was wondering if anyone knows if it is possible to make bulk
alterations to WSS sites that have already been made.

We have 100's of sites that we would like to add new webparts to,
without having to recreate them. I was wondering if this could be done
by altering the site structure for each site in the SQL server?
