    - HOW TO open jpg files in its associated application not the browser Hi all, I have a client that wants to open jpg and gif files in the application that has been associated to the file extension through windows. for example in this instance this particular client uses a special viewer for zooming in to the images and performing other tasks. It is webdav compliant, that is, it can open files from a http location. However, when the users click the jpg, gif and other extensions from the portal, they seem to be going to a preview mode within internet explorer. Is this possible out of the box?. Is there something that i would need to configure in windows or in sharepoint. I know there is a file in sharepoint that allows you to specify an application for a file type, but that is at the server level so that means that every user will get that by default.     - documents Issue: I have users uploading documents from a shared drive using the Documents option from Quick Launch. When they upload the documnet actually gets copied over to SHAREPOINT server. Is there the ability when create a documnets option to specify the path of where they should reside. This works when creating links and pointing to a network drive. Any suggestions?     - Web farm/Load balancing problem I am having problems getting WSS working properly with load balancing. I have 2 servers running IIS 6.0 and Windows Server 2003 with network load balancing and a back-end SQL server machine. I already have 2 static virtual sites on both servers and that works without problems. I installed WSS SP1 on server1 with the web farm configuration. Created a configuration database on the SQL server. Created a new virtual server and extended it with a new content database. This all works fine. On server2, I installed WSS SP1 with the web farm configuration. I pointed it to the configuration database I created earlier. I created a new virtual server on server2 and extended it with the command stsadm -o extendvinwebfarm -url -vsname -apidname -apidtype -apidLogin -apidpwd where all the values matched the virtual server created on server1. It seems to have worked and when I go into the Manage Content Databases page on server 2 it shows the already existing content database and it has the correct number of sites. However when I try to connect to the top level site it asks me to authenticate and then I get a 'Directory listing denied, The virtual directory does not allow contents to be listed'.     - Cross-site links list data view When I convert a links list to data view and export it, then import it to another (sub) site, i get error message "list does not exist". If I try to create a dataview links list in the subsite that gets its links from the top level site (by adding and connecting the data source of the subsite, in frontpage), The links are shown in URL format, the name of the link has gone.     - Site Collection Usage Summary I am checking the site collection usage summary on my site collections and the size it shows in there for the amount of storage it is using is drasitcally lower than what is actually being used.     - page viewer web part - folder view Hi, When I choose the folder option of the page viewer web part, I get the all the files and the sub-folder of the path I choose. How ever when the users start to browse with -in the page viewr they don't have the option to go back and they don't see the folder structure.     - You are not authorized to perform the current operation. I was able to get the site backed up from the original server but I have not been able to restore it. I get the below error. I am an administrator everywhere that I can think to set myself as such. I have tried the various KB articles about changing your IE settings but that has not helped.     - Automatic/programmatic import of Excel Data into list I have a folder into which a new Excel Sheet is periodically copied. Once every day I want to import the sheet data into a Sharepoint list. I know how to do this by hand, convert the data into list form and publish or merge to a sharepoint list. But what I need to do is do all this programatically. I have a sharepoint list and want to merge new data from a normal Excel List into it. I want to be able to schedule this task to run as soon as a new sheet is available in the target folder.     - Problem with lookup fields in DataSheet view In one of out lists(Lets call it list A) we have a lookup field to another list(List B) that is version controlled, this is causing trouble when we're trying to edit List A in the DataSheet view. The lookup field is populated with every single item of list B even the ones who are not marked as current. Since there has been quite extensive editing of list B, the lookup field is now virtually useless as there are a lot of duplicates in the lookup field. The lookup field behaves correctly when you edit an item, so I am suspecting this might be a bug with the DataSheet view. Exporting and linking to excel also has the same problem.     - Problem with Conditional Formatting in a Data View Web Part Hi, I have been having some problems using conditional formatting to highlight list entries where an expiry date is at least a month past in a data view web part. I have an Expire Date column, which is just a standard Date field in a sharepoint list, and have used a calculated field to add 30 days to the Expire Date field, which is used for the condition. I then added a Conditional Formatting Entry to change the row's background colour whenever the calculated field is less than or equal to the current date. In Frontpage, the proper rows are highlighted and everything looks fine. However, when I open the page in IE, none of the rows are highlighted. It seems to only be a problem with the calculated field, if I modify the Conditional Formatting to use the Expire Date field, everything works fine.     - Antivirus info I got access denied trying to pull up the FAQ on the WSSFAQ site, so I'll try posting it here: Am I protected by "local" AV software such as McAfee VirusShield 8.0 that I have installed on my WSS Server, in terms of files that are up- and downloaded? I have turned on the Virus Protection checkboxes in WSS Central Admin, but that is the usual mumbo-jumbo in terms of clear direction from Microsoft.     - Security error 0xC0000064 For some reason in the last few months every few days a random user will be prompted for a username / password while trying to access a site or a document in a WSS site within our SPS portal. No matter what they put in for a username / password, it won't let them in. When I check the security event logs of the SPS server, the only failed event is 0xC0000064. Has anybody see this before or have any clues? The network is a stable Win2k3 network with several DC's and GC's so I don't think this is a network related issue.     - Document Lib - Date filtering using "Modified" column in Calc I am attempting to do this date filtering for a Doc Library. I can't access the original "Modified" column for calculated formulas. Sharepoint only allows me to insert columns I have created. The only workaround I see is to create a new column such as "Date Modified", whose value is [Today].     - Date Filtering - Calculated Column using "Modified" Date I am attempting to set up a calculated column according to directions in one of the other postings on this group.     - connecting dataview web parts I have 2 data view web parts that I want to connect. The first web part displays customer names. Based on the customer name chosen, I want to populate data in the 2nd web part. This works if the first web part is a basic table layout. But, I want to do this with a drop-down for the first web part. There does not seem to be an event fired when a value is chosen in the drop-down. Is this possible? What has to happen to force the 2nd web part to refresh? The data passed between the web parts is a hidden field (not the customer name, but a customer id).     - SMIGRATE Performance Issues I was wondering if anyone has any ideas on what I should be monitoring for WSS performance problems. I backed up a site using SMIGRATE and it took about 2 minutes. I restored this site to out production server and it took 2.5 hours. However, the same restore took 5 minutes on another machine.     - rename WSS server instructions I have a WSS server with MS SQL Server 2000 installed locally. I have to rename my WSS server due to company reoganization. Current server name is XYZdept. Need to change to ABCdept. Current URL is http://XYZdept need to change to http://ABCdept. It appears from other posts that if I change server name under system properties, I will experience connection problems to database on WSS. Can someone please advise the best course of action.     - Anyone had problems with Edit after Acrobat install? I'm visiting tomorrow someone for whom Edit (in a doc lib) isn't working on some machines that used to have Acrobat Reader 5.0 (where it worked) but since installs of Reader 6.0 / Prof. 6.0 or Reader 7 it doesn't work. (Removing the install doesn't help) Has anyone heard of anything in connection with Adobe upgrades ? [Edit just lies there not working; doesn't throw up any error and adding Java gives a runtime error message / Object doesn't support this property (at line 117).     - error adding web part I am trying out WSS newly. I have installed Win2k3 and loaded WSS(the one including SP1 for WSS). On the home page of a team site I am trying to add a web part from the gallery. But when I click Add, it gives a message "An error has occurred". I have checked the permissions on the Winnt\Temp folder and it is fine. Still this error is ocurring. I am able to remove web parts from the page though. ANy suggestions?     - Changing Passwords Hi, My corporate network is part of a wider community connected thru a secure extranet. I am opening up certain sites to users in that wider community who are therefore not part of my domain. I am not running in account creation mode so i first set up active directory accounts with user names and passwords for them and then add them into the appropriate sites.     - THANKS!!!! Thanks guys so much for the replies. What I'm seeing is some Win2000 w/ Office XP work and some do not. In some cases when I reset (delete) their user profile, it starts to work actually. So, in some cases seems to be Roaming Profile related. It's also affecting the ability to save back to the site... not just the Explorer View issue. But as I said, if I delete their roaming profile, it seems to work again. This is the case for SPS, WSS and WTS (we have all 3, and all have same results). But just this morning, deleting a roaming profile for someone didn't work. So, I'm still trying to find a way to fix rather than spending the $$$$$$$ to upgrade all our users. Just can't do it yet. Since it does work for some, I know an upgrade is NOT necessary, but yes, an easy way out.     - Default Web Site -> Not Administrable I had Windows SharePoint 2.0 SP1 installed on a Windows 2003 Server. The WSS was using SQL 2000 for its configuration and content database. Everything was working fine until I installed Software Update Service. After that no one could get to the default site. However the Admin site was still working. So I backed up the databases in SQL, uninstalled SUS, WSS, and IIS. I then installed IIS and then WSS. I setup WSS to use the current config database which it seems it connects to okay. (No error messages) Then when I go to "Extend or upgrade virtual server" no Server's are listed. I select "go to the complete list" which lists the "Default Web Site" as "Not Administrable". I've performed these steps at least 5 times including reboots and stopping/starting services. I've also confirmed these steps to be accurate on another Virtual Server that I setup to test.     - users windows 2003 are being prompted for login/password in domain We just moved a bunch of people over to windows 2003(terminal services) and since the move users have been getting prompted for a login/password even when in the domain. I've unchecked "Internet Explorer Enhanced Security Configuration" added the the WSS sites to the trusted site group and changed to "logon in intranet only" I remember that there is a service that needs to be started for automatic login in windows 2003 but I can't seem to find it.     - Adding users from different Domains I'm running WSS in domain account mode and I am having problems adding users from different domains than the SharePoint server. I am able to add the users fine actually, but their names don't get imported. This only occurs for users outside the native domain.     - Client Script Library Install WSS Hi I am trying to install WSS on a Windows 2003 Web Server edition box. I got sharepoint services to install a few months ago but it had trouble and I had to uninstall it. Now on the same server I am trying to re-install WSS and i get the dreaded message: Unable to find the script Library /aspnet_client/system_web/1_1_4322/webuivalidation.js Try placing manually or reinstall using aspnet_regiis -c. Well I have tried everything I can think of for two days to either copy the scripts manually and or run aspnet_regiis -c to no avail. I have the scripts in every virtual web and root web and probably a couple other place by now. Still get the message. I did have it working this morning but then I found out the submit button did not work any longer. (Later I found a fix for this after I had laready uninstalled the .net frame work and the Sharepoint services.) now I am back in the same boat. I cannot get the dang cannot find script library message to go away nor can I run the aspnet_regiis -c command to reset the scripts. This is the biggest pain in the A$$ I have ever tried to install. Even Exchange and SQL are EASY compaired to this fiasco. I have logged in as Admin, Domain Admin, power user etc and still do not have the rights to run aspnet_regiis-c Any ideas would be greatly appreciated as I am about to tear up something if this continues!     - WSS Access Denied Question Howdy, My mother ship company is in Sydney, Australia. Our branch office is in Detroit, Michigan. Sydney just recently installed WSS (not Portal Server 2003) and I was made an Administrator over the SharePoint site. I have noticed several areas of the site where I do not have access as an Admin. I receive the "Access Denied" error. Anyone have any Ideas? I think that perhaps my user account should be a local admin of the server. I don't really know. Examples of areas that I can't go as an Admin: Under "Top-Level Site Administration... "View site hierarchy" "View site collection usage summary" "View storage space allocation" "View site collection user information" For whatever reason, I can access "Configure connection to portal site" Under "View Information about site users" I can only view user info and modify only my own. I had a user who deleted their SharePoint email detailing their username/password. I had no luck changing their password for them (seems like I should be able to as an admin). Any Ideas? Please don't include the WSS newsgroup when you are asking 100% Portal
questions.

Standalone WSS and the other WSS implementations of WSS than SPS 2003 do not
have access to the SPS 2003 Data Backup and Restore feature and thus
questions on it are misplaced in the WSS newsgroup which is for common
functionality only.
