Hi,

I am trying to get our SBS based WSS to index pdf files. I have downloaded
and installed IFilter 6 from Adobe but the instructions tell me to "Add PDF
as a file type to be included in the content index". Various sources talk
about using the "SharePoint Site Settings Page, in the Search Settings and
Indexed Content" section. I can't find this and assume it must be a Portal
Server version configuration. How do I do it in WSS?

Other sources talk about the need for re-indexing and I seem to need some
assistance here to.

Any suggestions most welcome. We have SBS 2003 Premium edition.

Regards,

Vic Russell

Note the first line of this WSS FAQ item

http://www.asaris-matrix.com/mvp-walsh/Lists/WSS%20FAQ/DispForm.aspx?ID=12

which is probably what they mean.

Then look at this

http://www.asaris-matrix.com/mvp-walsh/Lists/WSS%20FAQ/DispForm.aspx?ID=24

to see where you add .pdf to the list of accepted file types.

Hi Mike,

Thanks for that. The pdf file type is not blocked on our system and they
upload OK. However I seem to have to add pdf to somewhere so that it becomes
included in the content index. That's the bit I am having trouble finding
out how to do. The only reference I have found so far does not seem to apply
to WSS and I assume they are referring to Portal Server. We have WSS on SBS.

Any further ideas?

Kind regards,

Vic

It's odd because the Adobe procedure I have used in the past meant that pdf
files were included in the index.

Have you looked at the rest of the FAQ item that I referenced first. There
is quite a lot of extra info there. (Notably the bits about this only
applying to pdf files added after the IFilter has been installed + the later
fix to that.)

We're successfully indexing PDFs on our WSS cluster and I know all I did was
install the iFilter on the SQL and verify that the file type was not blocked
in Sharepoint Central Admin. It was just that easy.

Hi All,

Thanks. I seem to have the search for pdf's working now although only for
newly uploaded ones. I disabled Full Text searching in Central
Administration, waited a while and then enabled it again. This seemed to do
the trick.

Now to find a way of re-indexing everything.

I tried using the Query Analyzer with the following:-

USE STS_EAGLE_1
EXEC sp_fulltext_catalog 'ix_STS_EAGLE_1', 'rebuild'

but it reported that no rows had changed.

Any ideas on how to force an index rebuild?

Vic.

Hi,

All working well now. Maybe I just didn't wait long enough after my attempt
at index rebuilding. It said it had finished but who knows?

Thanks for all the help.

Again, getting indexing for existing lists is included in the WSS FAQ item
earlier referenced to. (although theoretically it's not possible)

It's often been reported that re-installing the IFilter has lead to
things working.
