I have sharepoint services v3 installed. I created a new site:
http://fp1/sites/whrservices. Which works great. However, if I use
the url http://fp1.mydomainname.com/sites/wharservices.com I get
prompted with an authentication dialogue box. So I enter my
credentials, click the save password setting and I'm in. However, I
always get prompted. What obvious thing am I missing??

Ben,
I've seen this when you type the FQDN your browser is in the "Internet"
Security Zone. At the bottom of the browser in the status bar you probably
see a globe and the word "Internet" next to it. You should probably add that
site to a more trusted site for it to automatically send your authorization
information.

To add the site to a more trusted zone, follow instructions like these:
http://technet2.microsoft.com/WindowsServer/en/library/910d7a79-fd6f-447e-9bb1-bc9e57d54ec41033.mspx?mfr=true

I hope this helps.

Yes, that fixed my workstation, is there a straight forward way to
make it work for all PCs, i.e. group policy. I saw where I can
"import" all my workstations security settings into a group policy, not
simply add a couple of "intranet" sites.
