    - install files in one EXE Hi all I have created installation package for a VB6 application using VS6 Package and Deployment Wizard. I have customized Setup1 project to include two custom dialogs that make couple of changes in the registry depending on user's response. Everything works fine, but now customer requested to wrap all installation package into one file like those that can be executed from the Internet. I tried Visual Studio Installer to create msi file, but it does not support custom dialogs. I need some other way to wrap all installation files created by PDW into one executable.     - To the Group Hi, Just so no one thinks I've done a "grab and run" from the group and since I may disappear for a longish period of time, I wanted to let anyone who might care that I'm experiencing "technical difficulties" that aren't going to be simple to get around. I don't -think- I Picked up a worm or anything, but you never know. So, no response requsted or expected. FWIW, I've begun to experience a lot of "funnies" on this machine I'll have to get after. As of this morning Norton's Live Updates have begun to fail, a Systray Icon has disappeared, a group policy seemingly modified itself, got a VB Fatal Error and had two posts not appear on another MS newsgroup, so I'm hoping this one makes it thru. Not the first time posts haven't made it even though they make it to my Sent folder and that worries me a tad 'cause that's going to be a few days old, starting when, I don't know (stupid for not keeping track of it). And no, I am not allowing any scanning of outgoing mails/posts by anything, in case it occurs to anyone as the cause. Add to that substantially changed bootup and shut down times, and something has definitely gone corrupted somehow somewhere.     - VB5: do pop up boxes stop all events? I am developing a data acquisition system that takes in real-time data and displays it. It seems that pop-up boxes (Msgbox, Commondialog) stops all other processing. If I leave one up too long, the my processing gets way behind and has to play catch-up.     - DLL Registration Lost in VB6 I have a DLL writted in C++ by a third party I am using in VB6 SP5. After I run the program about 6 time in the IDE, the CLSID of the DLL is lost by the IDE and on screen piece becomes a picturebox. Starting the IDE over again fixes the problem.     - XP SP2 command line trouble - update I posted on 8-4 about a problem with command lines on XP. That was so long ago that I'm posting new here with an update that might be of interest. The problem: I had written a wrapperr utility for XPDF that adds a context menu "Convert to Text" for PDF files. I added the standard Registry settings, with a Command key default setting of: PathofEXE %1 That all worked fine in tests on Win98, ME and XP SP1. And I've never received any email complaining about problems with the utility. But in XP SP2 the utility failed to find the file sent by Explorer in $Command. The problem turned out to be quite strange. The command line is in quotes! By writing a log file of the command line received, character by character, I found that Explorer on XP SP2 is sending me: "C:\somefile.pdf" instead of C:\somefile.pdf I don't know at this point whether it's a problem specific to the machine, but I don't see how it could be, since Explorer is handling the menu. Another oddity that only occurs on SP2: The content menu appears as it should on most systems, with a menu something like: Open Open With... Edit Convert to Text But on XP SP2 I get something like: Open Open With... Converts PDF file to text It seems to have substituted the EXE file description for the menu text, and then it shunted the menu itself onto the "Open With..." submenu.     - VB Chinese Code Problem Dear all, I am using Chinese VB 6 in Chinese XP, and my backend is sql server 2000. I have set the field in Sql Server to nvarchar. I have a combo box with several Chinese item. When I save the record, the Chinese become ?? in the Database. I have try several solution in following 1. Set the connection string with Auto Translate = false 2. Use Strconv function to convert the string to Unicode. 3. Download third party control Unitoolbox. 4.     - more on reading csv file into access Further to my earlier post, I have a final (I hope) problem in actually importing a csv file into Access (using vb6). In the code below I get a "type mismatch" error when I try to run it at the "&" before dataVals in the query Dim dataVals() As String Dim query as string Do While Not EOF(1) Line Input #1, txtNames dataVals = Split(txtNames, ",") query = "SELECT * INTO " & tblName & " IN '" & dbName & "' FROM " & dataVals dbBlock.Execute query Loop dbBlock.Close tblName is the name of the table I want to insert the data into and dbName is the full path to the database. I do not know how to get the array of data values (dataVals) into the query. The Split function is doing everything ok. I have defined dataVals as a string array but the actual fields in the data file are a mixture of numbers and text fields. I have set up the table in Access so each field is correctly defined an number or text so will the fact that dataVals is defined as strings cause a problem? Note that in different data files there will be different numbers of fields - that is ok as the creation of the table in the database takes care of that.     - VB 6 Application with MS Access 2000 backend for Windows 2003 Server HELP!!! everyone, I have a VB 6 application that uses Microsoft Access 2000 as the backend database. They say it requires MDAC 2.6 Sp2. This application is currently running fine on a Citrix server running Windows 2000 server. I have to migrate my citrix farm and so am upgrading to windows 2003 server and a newer version of citrix. However, when trying to install this one application that 30-40 users use, I recieve the following error. <----------Beginning of Error--------------> MDAC 2.6 Sp2 cannot be installed on this machine. MDAC 2.6 Sp2 requires any one of the following configurations: Microsoft Windows 95 or 98 with Y2K update 2 and Internet Explorer 4.01 SP2 or later Microsoft Windows Millenium Microsoft NT 4 SP5 (or greater) and IE 4.01 SP2 or later Microsoft Windows 2000 Setup will exit now. Please restart setup after installing the necessay updates to this machine. <------End of Error-----> I spoke with the vendor and they said that other IT departments might have gotten it too work on Windows 2003 with some minor tweaks. They said that it was developed in VB 6 with Access 2000 as the backend and that MDAC 2.6 Sp2 was a requirement. I installed Access 2000 on the new Windows 2003 Terminal Server and have tried both MDAC 6 SP2 and MDAC 7 before trying to load the app but still get the same error message without any luck.     - Microsoft Text Driver dropping some data during reading I am using the Microsoft Text Driver (DSN-less mode) to read CSV files in my application. these files are comma delimited, but not quoted by double-quotes. they come from many customers, so I cannot easily control their format.     - Ways to ignore "Error loading DLL"? Hi all, I often get the error "Error loading DLL" when compiling a certain ActiveX-Control. It seems that VB is somehow unable to locate or access it's correct "compatible control", and therefore generates this error. (Note that the path for the compatible control, and the build path are different). When I open up the project in the IDE, simply ignore the error and compile away, I get a perfectly working control, and will no longer get the error when opening the control project. Is there a way to tell the command line compiler to not display this error message, and simply compile the project anyway? I've got a compile tree of 20+ projects (and a tool that will compile them in the right order), and it makes life that little bit harder if you always have to manually compile a project right in the middle.     - How to set focus Dear all, I have a program which will detect the key pressed by the user, If the user press Enter key, the program will do something. My problem is when the user open the program and then select a file in the window desktop,and press the Enter key. The selected file in desktop will be open. All I really need is a msgbox to trigger & display for abt 3 seconds when a certain entry error is detected, and then go away on its own (auto-closing). Like i said it Works Great, but I don't understand it all. This seems to work OK, but I need to do a check to see if each element exists before I do my For.. Next loops. Thought about using 'if oLst.length > 0' but not sure if this is a good enough trap.     - Do I need to keep my pics / icons with the app? Hi All I'm using VB6 for my app. I get the idea about loading my bg pic into a var and then in code referencing this var for each form's bg rather than using the Picture param of each form, but I have a few forms that only use a particular bg so they would only load once anyway. My question is, once I have added the pics to my forms using the Picture button, do I need to supply/keep the actual files with my app or are the phyiscal pics embedded in the app itself? At the moment I have a 'data' folder next to my app and I have put the pics in this folder, added each one so the path is unchanged, but I don't know if I'm actually storing them there for nothing. What I'm trying to say is that if I remove the pics will this effect the display of them on the forms when my app is compiled and ultimately distributed without these files? I'm thinking along the lines of web pages, where you refer to the files in your code and if they aren't kept to this path then they won't display on the page.     - reading csv file into access using vb6 I want to write a vb6 program that will a) create a new access database then b) create a table from data in a csv file. The main problem seems to be is the format of the csv file - the first 4 lines of it contain header information, eg: x1,x2,x3,y1,y2,y3,y4,z1,z2,z3 etc Variable descriptions:,,,,,,,variable 1, variable 2, etc Variable types:,,,,,,,float,text,integer, etc Variable defaults:,,,,,,,-99,"none",-99, etc Line 1 contains the field names. The first 7 fields in lines 2-4 are always of constant type (float) and default (-99) and the descriptions "Variable descriptions:" etc are always present at the start of the lines 2-4. Lines 5 onwards contain the comma separated data. Do I have to read each of the first 4 lines into memory and split lines 1 and 3 into the various components before adding them into the access table? I haven't worked with vb and access before so am looking for help to create the field names in a table, then add the data. I guess this has to be done in some for.. next loop?     - Decimal Display This is kind of minor, but is there a way to format numbers as decimals? e.g. 0.5, 1.0, 10.0, 1.5, 99.0? Max allowed value is 99.5 (< 100). reason: I think it'd make some code simpler and easier to work with. I have to allow 1/2 pills in addition to whole pills, but only half pills. So, I have disallow entries other than 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, etc.. I've tried modulo, instr, CDec and a couple other things, but if the data (4 bytes long) could indicate a decimal value then all I'd have to do is check is to see if the last characters are .0 or .5 with Instr. As it is I'm going thru several gyrations to accomplish this with a bunch of IF's to toss up messages, but ... . I thought CDec(...) would do it, but "1" converts to simply 1, not 1.0. First I convert a string to a number and then applied CDec and debug.print - no decimal point. Perhaps I'm screwing up? Help isn't very clear on the return value. Or is there a better way to do such comparison? Since I do have it working OK, it's not a dire need, so in order for all of us to get on to more important things, please try to keep in mind my low experience level. without any problems. You might need to be a tad more specific than a vague
