    - Function Needed Can you write me a function? I need my app (VB6) to read and write to a text file. No problem with that, but the path to the text file is. I'm in need of a function that can return as String the path to the directory of the file. Spec are: Path is user specific, each user has seperate folder. Works in Win 98 and later, inc Vista. I would like to put the file in it's own folder in the users App data folder, so the function would need to find this folder, check for the existance of a folder with same name as the program within the app data folder, and if not found then create that folder, then return the path for that folder.     - Raising an event from Windows Control Library Hi I am in the process of attempting to migrate from vb6 to visual basic 2005. I have a vb6 activex component which uses the winsock and a vb6 program which responds to events from within the activex component. For example if the activex received data from the winsock it raises and event which the vb6 executable reponds to. Visual Studio imported and upgraded the activex component quite happily to a windows control library. If I try to upgrade the executable I get an error message to say that the activex component is out of date or needs to be rebuilt - firstly anyone any ideas how to deal with this? I decided to just write a simple windows application with visual studio 2005 and added a reference to the new control library. Everything works fine interacting with the winsock - network goes on line etc, however the windows application NEVER sees the events. The events are being raised - I've added a new one which should just display a message and even that doesn't work. I'm sure its something very basic (lack of time and knowledge!)... I declare the event in my control library: Public Class SmControl Inherits System.Windows.Forms.UserControl Public Event DisplayMessage(ByVal sMessage As String) Public Sub DisplayAMessage() RaiseEvent DisplayMessage("Message from Component") End Sub End Class In my program it has the following: Public WithEvents MessageInst As Sm.SmControl and I have added a routine to respond to the DisplayMessage Event My program just has a button which should call the DisplayAMessage function and therefore raise the DisplayMessageEvent and it does not happen.     - Listview store data for tooltiptext Hi All, I have a listview with two columns. I need to store additional information in the tooltiptext but I already used the .Tag option for something else. So I tried the .Key option but that doesn't work. I still get to see the information from the .Tag option. I have the Listview1.MouseMove code to show the tooltiptext: Listview1.ToolTipText = Item.Key But this displays the information from the Item.Tag instead of Item.Key.     - preventing multiple instances of my VB 6.0 application I have added code in my form load to prevent multiple instances by using the following: If App.PrevInstance then end else load stuff end if This works fine; however, when I open Task Manager and see the Applications running there appears multiple names of the same application. One for each time I attempt to launch the Application. The high level details are my application is an exe with an ActiveX.dll file that holds all my class objects. Any suggestions?     - Dynamically add a control IF the corresponding OCX is available? Is it possible to add a control to a form at run time without using a control array? My scenario is, I've got an application written using a "propritary" application frame work (Microsoft Dynamics SL Tools for Visual Basic) . I need to support the program in two different version of the application frame work. In one version of the frame work, the system expects the main form in the project to contain some controls from an old version of CodeJock's Command Bar control. It expects these controls to always have the same control name. So for example, the frame work expects to be able to find a control in the EXE named: Form1.MenuBars. In the other version of the frame work, these CodeJock controls are not required. For the purposes of my programs, the existance or none existance of these controls on the main form are the only real difference between what I need to support the two version of the frame work. So, what I want to do is limit as much as possible the amont of duplication of source code files required. I plan to have two versions of the VBP file. Which will reference the correct versions of the Framework specific files, but for all "my" (i.e. none-framework specific) source code I want to maintain a single set of source files. When My program first starts running, I can determine which version of the frame work it was compiled to pior to the point at which the Framework DLL is going to come in and start looking for the Form1.MenuBars object... so what I want to do is add code at the very begining of the program that will add the Form1.MenuBars object "IF" the program is running for the version of the framework that needs it. Please note, I'm NOT looking to create a single EXE that will work in both versions of the Frame work. I'm sctrictly trying to create source code that will compile without complaining when I try to compile it with or without the reference to the CodeJock OCX file... but then when it is compiled for the scenario where the OCX will be avialable, the program needs to have the Form1.Menubars control on the form exactly as it would have if it had been added at design time.     - remember listview item for later use Hi All, I have a listview on a form in VB. The listview represents the data from a table. When I add a record to the table and I click Refresh the new record gets added to the Listview. What happens is that the Listview is cleared and filled again with the new Recordset. When I do that the Listview is shown from the top. Is there a way to remember the item that is shown at the top of the Listview.     - Ubound I want to use UBound to check the upper bound of an array, so I can loop round the array and get the information, but if the array is empty, I get an error "Subscript out of range" So...bearing in mind I need to loop through the array, how do I check if the array is populated or not.     - Lock's difficult Hi, I work with a Database Access 2003 with Jet 4.x and code VB6 (or VBA). An user accedes to a distinct data row of a table and locks exclusively this row (read-write). At this time, if other users would like to accede at the same row, it's impossible and an error return. With some code, I can decide what I do when this error occurs. But a problem: Jet 4.x doesn't know distinct data row, but just knows data page included other rows and puts a lock on all other rows. My question : how I can do to lock just a distinct data row ?     - enter a part of a name then get a list of all matching names. I'm sure the answer to my question is in this group somewhere but I have no idea what to use as a search criteria. Not only that but I may not even be able to make it clear what I want. I'll try I want to let my users enter text in a combo box and as they do, I want the combo box to display all entries that start with the text they have typed in. so when they type n all entries starting with n will appear in the combo box list when the add the "a" na all entries starting with na will appear in the combo box list continuing to add letters like "m" will display nam etc etc This is a very common feature of name programs but I have no idea how to accomplish this. The data resides in a table in an Access type "mdb" database but what I would like to do is populate a sorted combo box when the program starts then simply scroll the combo box list to the appropriate point and let the user click on the name they want to put it in the text box portion and carry on with the rest of the program.     - Read characters I'm looking for a way to search a text file, at a certain position, on each line (using vb6.0). For example, I cannot have a # (number character) at the 25th position in each line. The 25th position is a flag, and I'm looking for the pound sign. If it exists, I will report which line. There are as few as 3 or as many as 6 lines in this text file. All that is required is just searching, I'm not writing any part of the file out. This is a text file, not binary data.     - Run-time error 3420 Object is no longer valid HELP! I have created an ocx/activex control which I am using in a vb6 form.Sometimes when I try to show this form, I am getting a run-time error'3420': Object is no longer valid. The Err.Source is ADODB.Field.When I click debug and try to run through the routine again to seeexactly what line it's on it works perfectly. As a matter of fact, itgives me the error the first time everytime and the second time runsfine. I put in error handling to just retry that line of code if it's error3420 and this fixes my problem. If it simply retries the same code itexecutes without error. What could possibly be causing this? I donot want to put such strange error handling in my code as it seems abit unstable and I'm afraid it could lead to more problems in thefuture. I'd like to find a "real" solution to this problem.     - Copy file on filesystem specifying speed of transfer? I have a need for a utility that will let me copy a file from one location on my internal network to another location on the same network. Over a 100 MB full duplex line, the transfer is very fast. I need to slow down how fast the file gets copied so I can mimic an FTP transfer in order to test some scripts I'm writing. Is there anyway to determine the maximum transfer speed of a file copy without actually copying a file? I can't think of any. I want to be able to specify the speed of the transfer, so I can test based upon a cable, dsl, T1, Frac T, dial-up, etc transfer. So far, I'm thinking of opening the file in binary mode, getting a specified number of bytes and putting it into a new output file at the remote location. I've actually tried this, but I'm having trouble working it out. Any examples of doing a binary transfer from one file to another with a specified number of bytes would help tremendously.     - Remove Items From ComboBox A Form has 2 Frames - the first one encapsulates some TextBoxes & 2 CommandButtons. The 2nd Frame encapsulates a ComboBox, a TextBox & a CommandButton. When the app loads for the first time, the 1st Frame is visible. When any of the 2 CommandButtons in the 1st Frame is clicked, the 1st Frame gets hidden & the 2nd Frame becomes visible. The CommandButton on the 2nd Frame is provided so that users can revert back to the 1st Frame. Assume that the ComboBox has 20 items. Now when the CommandButton in the 2nd Frame is clicked (so that the 1st Frame becomes visible & the 2nd Frame gets hidden), I want to delete the text, if any, from the TextBox & also delete all the items from the ComboBox. When I uncomment the 3 MsgBox lines, the first MsgBox says 20, the 2nd MsgBox (within the For....Next loop) doesn't fire even once & consequently the 3rd MsgBox also says 20!.     - VB script and GPO Hello, I manage a couple labs and a VB script is failing to run when a user first logs into the machine. Simply put, if the user logs on for the first time and doesn't have a user profile, the script fails to run. My script is applied at the OU level through a GPO and is adding printers for the labs. Anytime the user logs in after the first attempt, the script runs fine and the printers appear. The problem only occurs when the user first logs into the machine and needs to create a user profile.     - Populating ComboBox A Form has a Frame which encapsulates a CommandButton along with several TextBoxes. There's also a ComboBox on the Form which is outside the Frame. When a user comes to the Form for the first time, the ComboBox isn't visible to him but the rest of the Form elements within the Frame are visible. When the CommandButton within the Frame is clicked, the ComboBox gets populated with all the unique UserNames that exists in a MS-Access DB table. Note that the very first item in the ComboBox is 'ALL' which isn't retrieved from the DB table. It is manually added as the very first item in the ComboBox. The unique UserNames from the DB table are listed after that. Apart from this, the entire Frame becomes invisible & only the ComboBox is now visible to the user when the CommandButton is clicked. There's a OnClick event function of the ComboBox so that users can select UserNames from the ComboBox as per their choice.     - Problem with MsgBox in ActiveX Hi all, I have this scenario: A client application (VB6 standard exe) has various batch processes that take time to complete. These processes are carried out on the server (Activex EXE). The user is stuck till a process completes. These processes need to be moved into "background" processes, thus enabling the user to start a process and continue working with the client. So my solution is to create a new activex exe for each process. So far so good. But there's a slight problem. These processes are event-driven and they need to display message boxes for further confirmation, etc. Therefore, this is what's happening: 1. User launches ProcessA1 2. ProcessA1 displays MsgBox awaiting answer 3. User launches ProcessA2 4. ProcessA2 has to wait because MsgBox is being displayed This will result in a problem because many users could be launching processes at the same time, and they will be blocking each other till MsgBoxes are clicked away. Tried the following methods: used the rptFmtText parameter in the ExportReport method, First saved it as .txt file and then converted it into the RTF format per the below KB article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/231726 The problem is it is losing all the formatting and appearing as plain text. used the rptFmtHTML in the ExportReport method, First saved it as .htm file and then converted it into the RTF format per the automation code mentioned in the above KB article The problem is the report contains the place holders that you see when we save a html page as an RTF or DOC. The requirement being an exact copy of the datareport in RTF format which is similar to the one that gets generated when we do an acSendReport in MS Access.     - Delete a 64-bit key using VB 6.0 I can't seem to find a way to delete a key from the Vista 64-bit registry using my Visual Basic 6.0 (32-bit) app. I've tried using oShell.RegDelete, and also WMI, but both always try to delete the key from the Wow6432Node (32-bit) tree instead of the standard 64-bit tree.     - Checking URL for file in VB.net how can it be done? Ok. Maybe I shouldnt post such basic questions here in such an advanced group but my high school programming teacher wont answer any questions outside of his curriculum :( My goal is create a program that will get feeded a url that links direcly to a file [ex. http://www.example.com/video.avi] the program will then determine if the file is there or not. There are probably more efficient ways of doing what I want to do but this is the way I have in mind: 1. dump the url's text into VB, in other words: what is actually in the webpage. (Most likely since the file will not be there the string "File could not be found" will be given to vb) 2. perform an [indexOf("File could not be found")] on the dumped text to see if there if the file is acutually there. 3. if the indexOf gives a -1 that means that there was never a "file not here" on the webpage therefore the file IS there! Wow that was hard to explain. When the user says yes, we create a CSV file and then we import it in excel. The problem we are facing now is that the import is taking a lot of time (2-3 more time). Since we haven't change anything in our code, what could be wrong ? a microsoft patch ? We are under windows 2000 server with excel 2000. We are exporting no more than 1000 row and a maximum of 50 columns.     - Random String for passwords Hello all. Some time ago, I asked here how one could generate password-like random strings, such as S2341ACE45DF. I need these passwords to be unique, and I need about 5000 of them at a time. They should have around 12-13 total character/numbers in them.     - Best way to start a program when specific email received? I have posted this to both the outlook and vb groups because I am not sure of the best way to approach this. I have written a VB program that processes an email based on the customer it is received from, the type of order, etc. I would like the program to start up whenever an email is received by the address I have Outlook set to. Am I better off to wake up my program periodically and check for the emails? Or is there a way to just have Outlook call my program when an email is received? I know how to save the email to a file or database when it is received but I am not aware of how to kick off a program from Outlook when an email is received. I would appreciate all thoughts and pointers to articles or discussions. This seems to fall in between the two programs as I am looking for the best practice. Thank you in advance for your help.     - OLE fails on Excel 97 I have a VB 6 app. that fires up Excel though OLE. I have a test system with Windows 2000 and Excel 97 and this works OK. I have a user with Windows XP and Excel 97 and it fails to start. I do not see an obvious reason for this. files .(mht) to my local drive.

I open a number of external tabs with VB and would like to able to
save these files to my c: drive.
