 - Add-In Fun - Debugging VB6 IDE Add-Ins OK, so there is also a Add-In Newsgroup, but this one gets much more traffic. Several people responded negatively to my request for Add-In debugging help. One person did give greate suggestions - thanks Ralph ! I added my 2 cents worth after following the procedure. So here is how to debug VB6 IDE Add-Ins 1) Open your MyAdd-In Project (I refer to the Add-In project as MyAdd-In) In Project Properties -> "Debugging" Tab Make sure you click "Wait for components to be started" Set breakpoints in interesting places. ie, IDTExtensibility_OnStartupComplete, AddinInstance_OnConnection, Or any place in your MyAdd-In Code Leave the project MyAdd-In open. 2) Open a separate VB Project to test your MyAdd-In. If necessary, Open the IDE AddIn Menu for the Add-In Manager and Load your MyAdd-In It was already there when I selected the new project IDE Add-In menu. Sometimes all three options were not checked, usually I had to check the first option to get the Add-In to appear in the IDE Add-In list, but not always. Need to fiddle a little more with that to see what is happening. You should now be able to debug the MyAdd-In. Yes you can. The MyAdd-In project is live and fully debug-able. Set / change break points, step through the code as the other project executes MyAdd-In commands. The new project with the instance of MyAdd-In open is really the live MyAdd-In in the MyAdd-In project. A common problem is an inability to connect to the "instance" in your MyAdd-In Project. So make sure there is only one dll present (rename the others). i.e. delete any instantiated MyAdd-In.dll Also, when making changes and restarting execution, I found that I had to close and restart both projects. Not too much trouble. Did not have to do any of the following: Sometimes changing the "Debugging Option" in the Add-In Project to "Start Program: <the_test_project>" and setting the AddiIn to load on startup helps.  - change ip/subnetmask/workgroup name on the fly, possible? I have a DSL line that I split and use on 1 Win98SE and 1 XP computer using a router. I'd like to be able to share files between machines, and if I understand it correctly, DSL requires dynamic IP's on both computers, while networking requires fixed IP's and the same Subnet Mask and Workgroup on both machines. Can I use VB6 to set the IP, Workgroup and Subnet Mask on each machine in real time, so I can change back and forth between file sharing and DSL configurations without rebooting?  - Playing an AVI file in a container I am using Visual Basic 6 I have an AVI file that I want to play on a spash screen. Normally the AVI plays in a window about 6 inches by 4 inches I can get the file to play automatically using the MM Control. I did try and use the Animation Control but it rejects it as the file has sound capability. What I was hoping to do was play the file in a container about 2 inches by 1.5 inches in the top corner of my spash screen. (Manually resizing the AVI while it is playing shows that it is still clear and legible at the reduced size.) The MM Control seems to be a method of turning the AVI on and off. I can find no controls that direct the operation of the AVI file itself. That is commands that determine location, height, width and borders, etc. Do such controls exist ? Where would I find them ? Is there a container I can play the AVI in that would resize the AVI to the container size ? Can I thank you in advance for any help and advice that you give me. I have a text about 50 lines long I want to embedd in resource file. I need to mention, that this text is not being read back by my code, so I need to preserve all original formatting, including the end of the line.  - newbie VB 2005 & Multitasking Q#1, I was able to rename the *.sln file,but how do I rename the folder that is called WindowsApplication1, the cmdline rename worked, but VS didn't like the outcome, what is the right method. Q#2, Can someone point to some psuedo code on how to do some multitaking on FileIO.FileSyste.CopyDirectory function.  - Shell program association We have an application that lauches a PDF file from the application (written in VB6). This works fine on most desktops in our production environment, however we have a few workstations that have both the Adobe Reader and Acrobat installed. On these systems even with the PDF extension associated with the reader, Acrobat is always the application that gets "launched" to display the PDF and not the reader.  - Form not showing in Form Layout window This has been the case of and on (mostly on) for years, but I just ran across it again while customizing the toolbar. My forms do not show up in the Form Layout window. You know, that's the window with resolutions shown as dotted lines, to get an idea about the size and position of your forms. Well, it just shows blue and empty, and none of my forms ever show up in it. Same at work and at home.  - Vista OCX controls not registered - Latest? I have spent the last couple days reading all the posts about this, and I have been posting questions about it since Vista came out, and am wondering if anyone has figured this out? It would be nice to be able tell my 35,000 customers what to do? And it would be nice if I could just recompile my install with everything set to self register but I am not sure this is working, for all flavors of this, ie last posts, threed32.ocx? Oh my gosh I thought this devil control was gone from my life but alas it reappears in vista form on these forums looking for a solution to what Microsoft has done to poor ol me... Ok, got your attention now? RECAP the gen thread: I have a vb6 app which (I install with installsheild or other msi using thing) and on Vista when my program is started after installation, it throws a grid32.ocx not properly registered error, oh yeah, only if UAC on the local machine is OFF. Turn on UAC and the app runs fine! Yes user was admin when installed. Yes ran the reg32srv and it says its registered. I read all the posts telling me to run a batch file or right click a permission, or unregister, allow active server to install and on and on... I just installed put my program a virgin clean vista machine and if UAC is OFF it wont run cause it says grid32.ocx is not properly registered. So how are we supposed to distriubute a real selling program made in vb6 on vista? Anyone really figured this out yet? Tom PS I have been rewriting this program in vb.net for the last two years, thank goodness, but I still need to distribute my old vb6 app for a while longer please???? Hello, Declare Function RegCloseKey Lib "advapi32" (ByVal keyHwnd As Long) As Long When closing registry key which value should I use for keyHwnd: phkResult obtained earlier by RegCreateKey(hKey, lpszSubKey, phkResult) or hKey value used in RegCreateKey?  - Preventing an application from staying in memory if closed improperly I need some general advice on how to prevent my VB6 application from remaining in memory after it has supposedly shut down. I am still trying to figure out why it does this, but I think it may be due to incorrect error handling or some proper coding etiquette that I'm not aware of. For example, I have seen it in memory after using the 'X' in the top right corner to shut it down. Should I put something in the Form_QueryUnload() subroutine to counter this? How about Form_Unload(). Is it proper procedure to always code to these events? My program uses a custom dll to talk to a camera, which I know can cause grief, especially if the connection to the camera is not closed before I end the application. I also use a MS Access database, but I always close the connection right after I get the data I need. I only do reads with this database. I have spent some time researching how to detect another instance of the application running, but App.PrevInstance isn't reliable and there are other methods available, but I haven't tried them yet. My belief is that it is better never to have a condition that would lead to the application still running in memory when it shouldn't be. If anyone has some advice on this topic, I'd appreciate it.  - Invalid Bookmark in VB6/Access97 Dear Experts, I'm facing an "Invalid Bookmark" problem in the next situation: I'm trying to update an Access'97 database using a custom VB6 application. Multiple tables in two or three different databases are being updated in one transaction (between objWorkSpace.BeginTrans / objWorkSpace.CommitTrans). All databases, as well as the VB application are available on the same client PC. The application has been running correctly for several years. But lately I get a growing number of complaints from users getting an "Invalid Bookmark" error and as a result, a corrupt database. It's worth mentioning that these users have switch to a new laptop, with an up-to-date WinXP installation. Does anyone has got an explanation for this problem? Are there any known problems about this error message, related to a hardware configuration or recent (MS)-software patch. Thanks for help!  - Vista / MSChart.ocx problem Hi, My company has a VB6 application that uses a number of OCX's, including the MSChart object (amongst others). We are currently testing for Vista compatibility, and have encountered the following problem: when we try to install the software, using a merge module for the Chart object, the registration of the component fails because some registry keys that were present (presumably) in XP, no longer appear to be present in Vista (e.g. HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot\Option). Has anybody suffered similar problems, or know of a solution to this please? Neither the Microsoft or Macrovision (we use Installshield 12 Express) sites are of any help. Interestingly, when we used Process Monitor to check the registration, it also claimed that the name C:\Windows\System32\regsvr32.exe.local could not be found. The file definitely exists in the folder, but I'm not too sure of the ".local" bit. If anyone could explain this, I'd be very grateful.  - Folder Select - Best Option I have a need to select a destination and source Folder. I've got a routine created by Randy Birch that uses the "Browse for Folder" shell commands. One thing I am apparently missing is the option to initialize or "remember" the starting folder location... like most Microsoft programs do. So my questions... 1) is this the best option for doing a folder select? and 2) how do I get the tool to initialize or remember the last folder selected when I re-launch the application?  - help on ftp command Hello, I'm new to vb, and I'm writing a code using ftp command to transfer file to pc, however, if the file doesn't exist on the ftp server, it will still download it to pc and create an empty file. It doesn't do it on win 2000 pc, it does on xp client. Please see my codes below: You can see, on the current day, the user could create max 4 files with BOdate01, 02...... However, most of time, she only creates one. When I ran this procedure, it created 4 files, 3 of them are with 0 bytes. It confused the user. I thought I could use the oAdobe.filetopdf command, but it seems it only works with postscript files and not gif. Is there another command that will do this?
