    - Any algorithm ideas? Hello I am developing an addin for Groupwise in which I have a particular problem. It is an issue of efficiency(not GW related) I need to scan a collection of objects each with a long & painful ID for example: 345SD3G098F.3F9SDNSD.SDF8S7DF98.SDFSDG So my approach up to this point has been to create a sorted string array, do an inital pass at the cost of O(N) - not too horrible for 1 pass. However, at regular intervals, I need to scan this same collection for changes. First I check the counts of each. If they are the same, I do nothing. That helps alot, but when changes are made, my algorithm becomes: For each MESSAGE in objMESSAGEBOX If DoBinarySearch(myArray(), MESSAGE.ID) = NOT_FOUND then RaiseEvent FoundNewMessage(MESSAGE ) end if next This yields about O(N * NlogN) if I remember my big O notation correctly. Can anyone think of a more efficient way to implement this? I tried custom Datatypes using a date-based sort, however, had little success. Thanks in advance.     - Mouse Wheel Scroll in VB for Excel I have a Dell Optiplex GX240 (Pentium 4, 2 GHz) at work running Windows XP Prof SP1, and Office XP. When I develop macros and subroutines in Visual Basic for Excel of for Word, the wheel on my wheelmouse (Logitech optical) does not scroll in either the code window (top right) or the immediate window (bottom right). It does, however, scroll in the project window (top left) and in the properties window (bottom left). For all other Windows applications, the wheel scrolls just fine. The VB version in both Excel and Word is 6.3 (Excel 2002 SP2, and Word 2002 SP2) I have tried a Microsoft wheelmouse with the latest drivers and get the same result. Interestingly, I have done a check on other computers at our location and some scroll ok and some do not. All are Dell's with the generic Dell wheelmouse (made by MS), and all run XP Prof SP1, with Office XP Any ideas on this inconsistent behavior? Brian Tag: Converting PCL files to PDF Tag: 547279

    - HELP! Difficulty while dragging MSFlexGrid I'm using drag and drop to drag an entry from an FlexGrid. Did you know that if you click on a line in an FlexGrid, and then drag your mouse off the bottom of the FlexGrid, the FlexGrid scrolls to the bottom of the list? Same thing if you move the mouse off the top of the list, the grid srolls automatically up to the top. This is wreaking havoc with my drag and drop operation. If the user's drag motion exits the grid from the side, then all appears well; The highlighted row remains where it is as the user drags the little person icon down to the drop zone. But if the user's drag motion exits the grid off the bottom (or the top), then all hell breaks loose as the grid starts scrolling madly for no apparent reason, the highlighted line representing the entry which is being dragged disappears and the user is left staring at the final entries in the list after the drag completes. Is there anyway to stop the FlexGrid from autoscrolling like this? Who needs it? That's what the vertical scroll bar is for.     - Encode BMP files Is there a way to encode and then decode BMP files? Maybe i can apply some kind of a mask to bmp file so it couldn't be opened and viewed, and only decoder programm can decode it and then bmp file would be viewable? I need to do it in VB Code.     - Formatting numbers in a column in excel through a vb6 application How can I format the numbers in a column of various worksheets in excel that I am writing to with a vb6 app? When opening the worksheet the numbers are being changed sometimes. Eg. The numbers are inventory numbers. 12.345 stays the same but 02.456 changes to 2.456 and 32. 120 changes to 32.12.     - Closing Program Correctly On Windows Shutdown Hi, I was wondering, is it possible to get a program to close itself down properly when it detects windows shutting down, rather than having windows kill it, or pressing end task when the screen pops up?     - SP6 and problems with XML Hi, Today I upgraded my development machine with Visual Studio SP6. Now, when I compile my app and upload my DLL to my production app server, I get an error (Object variable or with block variable not set) whenever I try to access an object of type DOMDocument30. My DLL resides on the app server and is called from an ASP page on a separate web server. A proxy stub for the DLL is registered on the web server, and the DLL has been set up as a COM+ app on the app server. This app has been in production for months without a hitch. Here's a simplified example: Sub Test(ByVal vsXMLString as string) Dim loXML as New DomDocument30 loXML.loadXML vsXMLString End Sub In this example, the error occurs when I try to call loadXML. I've tried other methods of the object as well, and I always get this error. The code I'm running hasn't changed at all. Like I said, the only thing different is that I installed SP6 on my dev machine, re-compiled there, and re-installed my DLL on my prod server. (I also recreated the proxy stub and reinstalled it on the web server.) Now my app doesn't run in production and my users are ready to slit my throat (not to mention my boss). Any ideas?     - Drag N Drop Woes I haven't done a whole lot of drag and drop so maybe I'm missing something obvious. Let's say I have 25 widgets on my application form. That's not a lot. Let's say also that one of these widgets is the source of a drag-n-drop, and one is a legitimate target onto which it can be dropped. The source widget is in Manual mode. Starting the drag is no big deal. A module level variable tracks the mouse down state for the control (MouseDown, MouseUp); if a MouseMove event occurs while the mouse is down then SourceWidget.Drag starts the drag operation. Starting the drag operation is no big deal. It's ending it which seems to be a real pain. Although the application will only process the drop if dropped on a particular TargetWidget, the user might drop the SourceWidget anywhere on the screen. This means that in order to know when the user has completed the drag, I need to implement every single DragDrop event handler for every single widget on the form? This is a development / maintenance nightmare! And what about changing the icon? We start off with the default drag icon, but as the icon is dragged over it's drop zone, I'd like to morph the icon to indicate that it can be dropped here. OK, that's easy enough, simply replace the DragIcon in the DragOver event handler of the TargetWidget. But now the user moves off the drop zone without dropping. Now I need to change the icon back. So again, do I have to place code into the DragOver event handler of every widget on the form to make sure that the correct icon is showed while the object is dragged over that region? (Technically, I'd only have to implement the handler for those widgets which border on the drop zone. But even this is not strictly true. Sometimes a quick mouse move will traverse a small area without triggering a DragOver.) Again, a development / maintenance nightmare! It gets worse. In this primitive example, I cited 25 widgets and one Drag source. In my scenario, we're more likely talking about three separate drag sources, with 2 different icons for each, depending on whether the object is over the drop zone or not. And between all frames, buttons, checkboxes, text boxes, etc., I have a heck of a lot more than 25 widgets on this particular form. Please tell me I'm missing something. I want to place the icon on a tool bar so I use the following command to put the icon a the clipboard.     - Byte Array Speed Years ago I wrote a simple Cipher program in DOS Assembler. I take a 6 Byte Password then XOR it to six Bytes of the Target file then write out the XOR'ed Bytes to a new file. I tried to do this in VB by Reading the Target file into a byte array , then proceeding as I did in the .asm program. It Is so Slow ..... Hi, I'm wasn't quite sure of the title I should give to this post as I don't know a lot about the aspects of VB I think I may need to solve my problem (e.g. ActiveX DLLs & EXEs, CallBacks, Interfaces etc.) despite trawling through a lot of stuff. Anyway I'll try and explain the problem and see what you make of it. From the offset I'll say that one of my primary concerns is trying to obtain a high degree of extensibility without the requirement of compiling my main project - although this might not be possible. From my main application I would like to be able to launch separate components (I use the term components at this stage as I don't know yet whether it will be a standard exe, activex dll, activex exe etc.). Each of These components would be different in appearance, and would require user interaction to perform a set of steps that would ultimately lead to a common end - in my case the configuration of an instrument. Irrespective of the component launched I'd like them all to raise a common set of events within the main calling application. For example, an OnInitialized event which is raised when the program successfully launches, an OnConfigured event when the set of steps have been successfully performed and an OnTerminate Event when the program unloads - which it would do when the steps are complete or when the user cancels out of the sequence of steps. From an appearance point of view it would be similar to setting up a DSN (or data source name), i.e. you first select the driver for which you want to set up the data source e.g. MS Access Database or SQL Server etc. (In my case you would select the instrument you wish to configure.) Based on this selection a specific wizard is launched to allow you to configure the data source. (In my case based on some lookup list in a database I'd determine the appropriate configuration wizard to launch for the selected instrument) When you are finished configuring the data source it appears in the list of DSNs and you can start the process again (In my case the component would have written configuration details to a database). Ideally I'd like to have the ability of adding new components without having to recompile my main application (meaning I wouldn't have to recompile my app to add support for new instruments) - I was hoping I could do this if the all these components were designed in such a way that all the main application would be concerned with is those common events i.e. all the components interact with the main app through some common interface.
