    - wide characters not accepted Hi, I am trying to create some wide characters but I get a warning when I compile the code. Here is my code wchar_t test = L'fi'; the warning is this. warning C4066: characters beyond first in wide-character constant ignored And just as the warning says the character is set to L'f' If I set it using the hex value it works but the code is far less readable. wchar_t testr = L'\xfb01'; Any idea what is wrong here?     - EXCEPTION_STACK_OVERFLOW caused by code executing in catch-block I have code that seems to have always worked until I tried it in a particular situation in a catch-block, although even this situation looks out of the ordinary, since it works fine in another catch-block. The service crashes with EXCEPTION_STACK_OVERFLOW and the stack always points to the same non-recursive function (or rather it opens an .ASM file dealing the guard page and then it is always the same function). I ran the case in the catch-block that did not cause this exception in the debugger and then it did - in exactly the same place - and it continues to run fine outside the debugger. The difference between the two cases is that in the first one the object goes out of scope (before it reaches the catch-block) and then, once a particular condition is detected, is re-created when the code returns to the scope (while (service-is-running) try { X x; ... } catch (Y) { disconnected ? make another turn; }) whilst in the second it is not destroyed but rather manipulated through functions that cause re-initialisation. In the debugger, the file with the guard page is opened as soon as the function that appears at the top of the stack is entered. The code is not particularly interesting but it should be noted that quite a few functions are called and some of these in turn have their own try-and-catch blocks inside them. It may well be that the number of variables created along the way will consume the stack, although for that to happen, I suspect, the stack that an application has when running inside a catch-block should be smaller than usual, and it is this that I would like to confirm. They also told me that to get my program to link the windows.h file in properly, that I need to have Windows PSDK installed . I've downloaded the latter of the Microsoft web site, but I still get the same error. From the following screen shot, you can see, that SDK seems to be installed correctly on my computer. I would expect any build errors be put in myBuild.err. but regardless of if MyProgram.dsp compiles myBuild.err is empty. Now it has been recompiled with VS2005 C++ compiler and I get STATUS_SXS_EARLY_DEACTIVATION.     - Problem in Auto detecting Codepage Hi, I am trying to Auto Detect the codepage for a txt file (containing English and other language characters as well). The txt file is saved in UTF-8 format. For this i tried using IMultiLanguage2::DetectInputCodepage using MLDETECTCP_NONE. In this, i am facing a problem that for certain files it is able to detect the actual codepage wheras for others it simply return English Codepage as output. I know it is not having any co-relation with the size but still giving it as an example. **** Again i am telling that the file is saved in UTF-8 format (Also it worked fine for any number of characters if saved in UTF_16 BE or LE formats).     - Bug in x64 strncpy() in PSDK msvcrt.dll The following test case will cause GP fault when run using the PSDK x64 compiler. The x86 library seems to handle this case just fine. The issue is having a string without a null terminator that aligns itself onto the very end of an allocates region such that strncpy() will run right off the end looking for the terminating '\0'. This problem persists in Vista x64 RC2. The test case does not verify that the next page is unallocated and you could be unlucky and have the test case work if that were to happen. I have not tried this with VS2005 x64 library.     - Lengthy algorithm in a thread Hi Gurus, I am writing a lengthy algorithm in my thread and notice that its execution time is about 4 secs. The issue I am having my CPU consumtion goes upto 90% when this algo is executed. In other words, when message for processing is posted to my thread it takes about 4 secs but also causes CPU to be 90%. I see in task manager spikes of around 80-90% marks indicating the time my thread processed the algorithm. I have tried to optimize my algorithm but can't avoid some loops (none of which are endless). Is there a way to get around this issue?     - Addressing Physical memory in XP using C++ I am using XP as an OS and I am using C++ programming language and need to write data to a physical address between 0xD0000 and 0xDFFFF I am aware that this OS used virtual memory so I may need to create a driver. I have download the windows DDK but have no experience with this and would like to get up and running very quickly can any one point me in the direction of an example that I could modify. I found a reference to an example program called GENPORT but can't seem to find any similar example in the latest DDK. I have also found an already written and complied driver called portTalk but this only allows you to talk to an addresses between 0x0000 and 0xFFFF.     - Stack frame incorrect on stack unwinding during exception I'm tracking down a problem where we're running into an access violation while unwinding the stack after throwing a C++ exception. From my investigation it appears the stack frame is not correctly setup. Below is an example of what I've observed. When I enter my function Validate() (shown below) esp = 0x4d6f62c and ebp = 0x4d6fbf4. Then it does: push ebp lea bp, [esp - 0x894] At which point esp = 0x4d6f628 and ebp = 0x4d6ed94. So the stack frame for Validate's locals should be ebp = 0x4d6ed94. And in fact [ebp + 0x830] is the 'this' pointer for Validate's STL string 'x' (when ebp = 0x4d6ed94). However, when I throw an exception in Validate() it ends up in a little piece of thunk code shown below: lea ecx, [ebp + 0x830] jmp std::basic_string::~basic_string() The offset from ebp is correct, but the value of ebp is 0x4d6f628 which is not correct. What happened? I did notice that this it the value of esp after the locals were accounted for in Validate().     - Debug version works but release crashes Hi, my console application works well if debug settings are used. Even if I build a release version and run it in the IDE everything is fine. If I execute the release version of the file, however, it crashes. Anyone know a good code sample I could read to help with the problem of feedback when dragging windows around. I have a number of floating/dockable windows in my application and dragging windows around is almost a random activity - more than 3 or 4 windows already docked, it is never clear where they will actually dock. There is some automatic feedback - the outline of the window is thick when it will land as a floating window and the border is thin when it is about to dock, but as I said already, this doesn't really help! How do I override and improve the feedback when moving docked windows? Also, a second question along similar lines - how do I force toolbars to dock in their own area around the outside of all windows. I'm using Visual Studio .net 2002 and C++/MFC: I would like to restrict my application GUI such that I prevent toolbars and floating/dockable windows from existing in the same 'frame'. I have 3 floating toolbars which can float and dock around the outside of my application. I also have several floating/dockable windows which at present are allowed to dock in the same area as a toolbar. For example if I have a window called "Project Browser Tree" docked on the left of my mainframe, then when the user drags a toolbar into the same area, the toolbar should dock on the extreme left of the application and the "Project Browser Tree" window should take up a space to the right of the toolbar and not be allowed to exist to the left, or even in the same area as the toolbar.     - EUC encoding with Visual C++? How would one go about reading a Japanese EUC encoded file in Visual C++? In MSDN, I looked up EUC and it said it was 51932, in the 932 family with JIS and SJIS. I tried opening my file like this: std::wifstream src; src.imbue(std::locale("ja_JP.euc-jp")); src.open(L"post.euc"); but it gave me a runtime error. So I inserted the code family instead, like below: std::wifstream src; src.imbue(std::locale(".932")); src.open(L"post.euc"); The program now runs, but the Japanese text is garbled. if I look at the file in Internet Explorer, the browser defaults on SJIS and I get the same garbled text.     - Debug Build fails, Release Build OK - VC++ 6.0 to VS2005 port I'm trying to upgrade a large project from VS 6.0 to VS 2005. After fixing a lot of things that changed (mostly sloppy coding in the original project that VS2005 didn't allow), I got the release version to build successfully.     - Compiler bug with aligned members in virtuals + alloca() in VS2003 Hi there, I believe I've found an issue with a specific combination of object instantiations and the alloca() function. It appears that the compiler miscalculates the placement of ESI on the stack, so in a debug build, the __RTC_CheckEsp() stack checker function throws up the following warning: "Run-Time Check Failure #0 - The value of ESP was not properly saved across a function call. This is usually a result of calling a function declared with one calling convention with a function pointer declared with a different calling convention." I've attached the code below and it should be reproducible by creating a new win32 c++ project and just running and building it in debug. Thanks for your attention. If you can confirm my results, please let me know. I've tested it against the original VC++ 2003 and similar code causes the same issue with SP1. I'll update when I get to try it on VS2005.     - Virtual Memory growing seemingly independent of Private Bytes We have an application that receives network packets and writes them to files on disk. This application will run along nicely with about 85M of private bytes and 200M of virtual bytes in use. After about 6-12 hours of running, the virtual bytes will take off to over 1.7 G and bad allocs will start occurring. We have been examining this behavior from every which way and can't really explain it. The private bytes never grows appreciably. Any ideas what can cause this? The app does have several dynamically loaded dlls and we us the dll version of the runtime library to help consolidate memory allocations. The network communications use completion ports and the app is heavily multi-threaded. present in the system. What is the API that needs to be used?
