    - Toolbar buttons , the sequel hi im using a Toobar and TRYING to set buttons looking "disabled" at run-time. # Note that the tool bar works perfectly well. I get all the notifications and colors etc...     - Getting result of odbc's INSERT INTO command Hi everybody, I am currently writing a library for adding/deleting/querying records of a database. In this special case I have used the ODBC-C-Functions. What I need is the resultset of an INSERT INTO operation. For example there should be the id-column returned, if I add a new record.     - Returning BSTR to VB I have an api I wrote in a dll which returns the file description based on a window handle. The handle gives a process ID, which give a FileName and so on. The routine works fine but VB has a problem with the returned string. The string is put into a multi-lined tooltip. If there are any trailing null characters, the tooltip ends there and doesn't show any info after that even though there is. So I have to strip the null chars first (in VB) before adding the string to the tooltip. Most of the time (90%), there aren't any null chars at all. When they are defined in the source file, I get unresolved references for those functions when I try to build the client app. This is a debug build, and I am not using function inlining.     - How can I get the size of this? Hello,All! I am now having a problem at using sizeof() function to ensure how many items I have in my programe, the source code likes this: const char* Data[]={"abc","bcd","cde","def","wot","shame"}; and now I were trying to use sizeof() to get the size: int szData = sizeof( Data ) / sizeof( Data[0] ); but now the system told me that was illegal sizeof() caller, then I did some change like this: int szData = sizeof( (char*) Data )/ sizeof( Data[0] ); and int szData = sizeof( (char**) Data )/ sizeof( Data[0] ); To my surprise, both of them were just get the size of the pointer, here in my programme, they are 4, I mean sizeof( (char**) Data ),sizeof( (char*) Data ) and sizeof( Data[0] ). so we can sure that they are all just a pointer. Because, if you override the Traits, and provide your comparison functions, then it is possible to keep array in Ordered. CElementTraits::CompareElementsOrdered, but it seems in atlcoll.h header file, where ATL's collection classes are implemented, I don't see any code where you can add elements in to the array in ordered.     - Detecting Disk in Floppy Drive As I work to port a large application system to VC++ 6.0, I encounter things that don't - the latest is a simple function that determines if a named floppy drive (A or B) contains a disk. Using _chdir and other calls I've found don't work, because either a failure produces a system message error or it doesn't work. Surely there must be some code that does this. I'd prefer seeing something that's C-based, as my applications are currently 32 bit DOS programs (I don't know how to write Windows applications...).     - Volatile + multithreading Is volatile really of any use with the current compilers VS 2003? The only time I think volatile may do something on code is if it is used on a parameter value or on a method variable. Using volatile on any class field or global seems to have no impact because it seems the compiler will never not read or write the variable directly from memory for any variable that is not a parameter variable or a method variable. Thinking more closely on this it kind of makes sense otherwise all multithreaded code would potentially be in jeopardy. Think what would happen if you really did have to apply volatile to avoid a variable being put into a register. In multithreaded code that would many virtually any variable you use that you access from another thread would require having volatile applied. locks, and locking do not protect you, as the compiler doesn't know anything about lock calls (even if it did, it wouldn't matter because if you called a locking/synchronization object indirectly through a virtual members or just multiple calls there is no way it would know there could be an issue until runtime which is too late.) think of a case where I do the following. class MyClass { bool m_bDone; MyMethod() { //What if compiler put m_bDone in register AX here AcquireCriticalSection() while(!m_bDone) //What happens if m_bDone was preloaded in a register earlier and now this is while(!AX) { //Do work here } ReleaseCriticalSection(); } //.. Other methods here } This means that locks would not protect you, only the keyword volatile would. This would require you to put volatile on every variable used in a way that mattered. It seems the compiler writers must have known this and instead imposed the rule that only parameter variables and stack variables (method variables) can be optimized into registers since no one is likely to pass the address to one of those to be used by another thread. This I believe prevents a majority of the multithreading issues that could have resulted from optimization. I thought there might be a compiler option that would optimize this so you would require this. It seems there is a compiler option for aliasing that seems to suggest enabling it will require putting volatile everywhere, but when I tried it, it still did not optimize any of the non-stack method/parameter variables into registers that I could see. I'm sure some compiler or platform does support it, and I guess it's possible Microsoft compiler might support it too eventually, but if they enabled it by default it would break a whole heck of a lot of code. So it seems that volatile on Intel platforms with the Microsoft compiler by default really don't require volatile in almost any circumstance. Or am I missing something?     - Bug in VC++ - Conflict between function name and class name I've noticed what I think is a bug in VC++ 6.0. Can someone confirm and also test whether it is still present in later versions? In C++, as in C, it's legal to use the same name for both a user-defined type and a function or object. When the type name is referenced, if it is, it must be preceded by the keyword for its declaration. It is also legal to forward-declare a class name in a friend statement, making an as-yet-undefined class a friend of the current class.     - Error: missing export MFC70.DLL:6045 Hello everyone, Here's the situation... I have a full blown app that gets installed. The powers that be wanted to add a nag dialog before a second pressing. This 'should' only change the .exe. But now when I install the App and try to run it I get an error "EXE file is linked to missing export MFC70.DLL:6045". The MFC70.DLL is installed and works if I use the old .exe. I used .NET 2002 to recreate the original App's build enviroment. I'm under the impression that the "6045" refers to a particular function call I am using, which if I knew which one, maybe I could code it differently. Anyone have any helpful advice?     - Eliminating msvcr71.dll & msvcp71.dll dependency Hi, I'm building this dynamic link library and it's compiled with "Code Generation" option set to "Multithreaded DLL". It's designed to be linked by another DLL or EXE. From what I understand, I can't use "Multitheaded" here because multiple "static" copies of CRT running in the same process space can cause problems. (And If I set it to "Multithreaded", my program will crash in very weird parts.) So I stick to "Multithreaded DLL", and everything goes fine. The problem is that since the DLL is generated by VS.NET 2003, it has dependency on MSVCR71.DLL and MSVCP71.DLL. I know I can ship these two files with my software package. But what if I don't want to do so? Can I dynamically link to the "latest available CRT" on users' computer? Can I link to an older version such as MSVCR60.DLL and MSVCP60.DLL?     - Windows Forms Application Template Not Listed I've been writing command line-based applications. Tonight I thought I'd get started with Windows applications, so I searched for some tutorials on the Windows API and many resources seemed to indicate the easiest way to create a GUI is using the Windows Forms Designer (From what I've read, it's similar to designing a GUI with Visual Basic). That sounded terrific. Unfortunately I seem to hit a snag at step 1. I don't have a Windows Forms Application template listed for my project options. Although I'm fairly new to C++ programming, I'm not a novice computer user. I've checked through every group of project options, verified installation options when installing the application, and searched a few search engines for similar problems, only stumbling upon one other mention of the same problem on a message board (two or three other people chimed in saying they had the same problem), but those posts stopped about 3 months back with no resolution. Is it the version of the program I'm using? Or do I need to download additional templates somewhere? (I couldn't find any mention of it at Microsoft's site). The closest option I have to a Windows Forms Application is an MFC Application, but that doesn't seem right. I'm using Visual C++ .NET Standard 2002. I've gone through all the documentation and examples in the MSDN Library for Task Scheduler but I'm flumoxed by an error when trying to add a task to the scheduler. I tried to change the LogOn for the Task Scheduler service to a Domain Account with local administrator rights, but restarting the service brings up a error: "Error 1709: The account specified for this service is different from the account specified for other services running in the same process." Maybe because the executable is svchost.exe, and there are a lot of processes running with that one. Anyway, the error I am seeing is probably indicitive of some other underlying security or permissions problem that may cause more difficulties further down the road, so I'm focused on getting this method working as it is, rather than looking at WMI, the TaskScheduler.dll from Site Server, or third party products.     - USB Programming / Interfacing Hello, I would like some quick and dirty USB information if possible to give me a feel for what I'm getting into and if I should take another approach. I am designing a non-speed-critical hardware peripheral that I would like to control with a Windows XP application without getting into a programming nightmare. Internally the hardware is parallel so conceptually I'd like to simply connect it to a generic uProcessor-style ADR/DATA/RD/WR parallel interface. Some various approaches to producing this parallel interface are: Go through the PC serial port, go through the PC parallel port, go through the PC USB port, go through a PCI card that translates to a generic RW parallel port, such as FPDP. With my limited Windows knowledge, it believe the only one of these directly supported by the Windows API is the RS-232 serial port, with the remainder all requiring add-on drivers. I've done a lot of RS-232 serial programming in the past but its popularity is waning. So, my thinking is that USB would be a reasonable choice since it seems to have the brightest future among those I listed. I have looked at the numerous USB resources out there and what I'm after at this point is a thumbnail sketch of what I might need to do on both the host and client sides of USB, or maybe not use USB at all. On the host side: 1. Is there any standard API support for USB programming in any of the VS C/C++/MFC/C# libraries? 2. What would my program need to do to read/write data to an arbitrary USB peripheral? On the client side: 1. It appears that there are standard USB interface ICs available that take care of the USB protocol dirty work and transparently provide some sort of generic parallel interface to my hardware when all is said and done. Hi Folks

I have a program that was writing for me back in 1992 in Basic.
This programs has work great for me until the printer part of it will not
work with windows defeault printer. (i.e. usb or something not in a file)

Question is a way to have this old basic program update to something in the
21 century. The person who wrote the basic program has pass away.

Any help and suggestion whould be great.
