    - How can I get the size of this? Hello,All! I am now having a problem at using sizeof() function to ensure how many items I have in my programe, the source code likes this: const char* Data[]={"abc","bcd","cde","def","wot","shame"}; and now I were trying to use sizeof() to get the size: int szData = sizeof( Data ) / sizeof( Data[0] ); but now the system told me that was illegal sizeof() caller, then I did some change like this: int szData = sizeof( (char*) Data )/ sizeof( Data[0] ); and int szData = sizeof( (char**) Data )/ sizeof( Data[0] ); To my surprise, both of them were just get the size of the pointer, here in my programme, they are 4, I mean sizeof( (char**) Data ),sizeof( (char*) Data ) and sizeof( Data[0] ). so we can sure that they are all just a pointer.     - CAtlArry - Sorting/ Ordered Anyone knows how to sort the arrays, or how to insert an element in the array in Ordered? Because, if you override the Traits, and provide your comparison functions, then it is possible to keep array in Ordered. CElementTraits::CompareElementsOrdered, but it seems in atlcoll.h header file, where ATL's collection classes are implemented, I don't see any code where you can add elements in to the array in ordered.     - Detecting Disk in Floppy Drive As I work to port a large application system to VC++ 6.0, I encounter things that don't - the latest is a simple function that determines if a named floppy drive (A or B) contains a disk. Using _chdir and other calls I've found don't work, because either a failure produces a system message error or it doesn't work. Surely there must be some code that does this.     - Using CAtlMap - Correct way. Platform: VSIDE 2003, VC++ native, not managed. I want to use CAtlMap in one of my application, and I am trying to use it as follows, I want to know that am I doing it correct or is there any other way: CAtlMap<LPCTSTR, LPCTSTR> map; //both key and value are LPCTSTR now when I want to add an element, I use: map["FName"] = "First Name"; map["LName"] = "Last Name"; or if in a function: void AddValues(LPCTSTR key, LPCTSTR val) { map[key] = val; } Now my doubt is, do I have to allocate these strings of key and value, lets say by using strdup or malloc, or new.? and then add into the map? or if I add as I specified at the top, then strings will get deallocated, or their destructor will be called properly so that I will not get memory leak?     - Volatile + multithreading Is volatile really of any use with the current compilers VS 2003? The only time I think volatile may do something on code is if it is used on a parameter value or on a method variable. Using volatile on any class field or global seems to have no impact because it seems the compiler will never not read or write the variable directly from memory for any variable that is not a parameter variable or a method variable. Thinking more closely on this it kind of makes sense otherwise all multithreaded code would potentially be in jeopardy. Think what would happen if you really did have to apply volatile to avoid a variable being put into a register. In multithreaded code that would many virtually any variable you use that you access from another thread would require having volatile applied. locks, and locking do not protect you, as the compiler doesn't know anything about lock calls (even if it did, it wouldn't matter because if you called a locking/synchronization object indirectly through a virtual members or just multiple calls there is no way it would know there could be an issue until runtime which is too late.) think of a case where I do the following. class MyClass { bool m_bDone; MyMethod() { //What if compiler put m_bDone in register AX here AcquireCriticalSection() while(!m_bDone) //What happens if m_bDone was preloaded in a register earlier and now this is while(!AX) { //Do work here } ReleaseCriticalSection(); } //.. Other methods here } This means that locks would not protect you, only the keyword volatile would. This would require you to put volatile on every variable used in a way that mattered. It seems the compiler writers must have known this and instead imposed the rule that only parameter variables and stack variables (method variables) can be optimized into registers since no one is likely to pass the address to one of those to be used by another thread. This I believe prevents a majority of the multithreading issues that could have resulted from optimization. I thought there might be a compiler option that would optimize this so you would require this. It seems there is a compiler option for aliasing that seems to suggest enabling it will require putting volatile everywhere, but when I tried it, it still did not optimize any of the non-stack method/parameter variables into registers that I could see. I'm sure some compiler or platform does support it, and I guess it's possible Microsoft compiler might support it too eventually, but if they enabled it by default it would break a whole heck of a lot of code. So it seems that volatile on Intel platforms with the Microsoft compiler by default really don't require volatile in almost any circumstance. Or am I missing something?     - Bug in VC++ - Conflict between function name and class name I've noticed what I think is a bug in VC++ 6.0. Can someone confirm and also test whether it is still present in later versions? In C++, as in C, it's legal to use the same name for both a user-defined type and a function or object. When the type name is referenced, if it is, it must be preceded by the keyword for its declaration. It is also legal to forward-declare a class name in a friend statement, making an as-yet-undefined class a friend of the current class. The following code should be legal but instead VC++ 6.0 produces an error message. class A { private: int x; void a(); // declares member function friend class a; // forward declares a as a class and friend }; class a{ public: a(A &aa) {++aa.x} // reference to private member should be allowed // because a is a friend of A }; The error occurs in the constructor of class a with the message "'x' : cannot access private member declared in class 'A'".     - Error: missing export MFC70.DLL:6045 Hello everyone, Here's the situation... I have a full blown app that gets installed. The powers that be wanted to add a nag dialog before a second pressing. This 'should' only change the .exe. But now when I install the App and try to run it I get an error "EXE file is linked to missing export MFC70.DLL:6045". The MFC70.DLL is installed and works if I use the old .exe. I used .NET 2002 to recreate the original App's build enviroment. I'm under the impression that the "6045" refers to a particular function call I am using, which if I knew which one, maybe I could code it differently. Anyone have any helpful advice?     - Eliminating msvcr71.dll & msvcp71.dll dependency Hi, I'm building this dynamic link library and it's compiled with "Code Generation" option set to "Multithreaded DLL". It's designed to be linked by another DLL or EXE. From what I understand, I can't use "Multitheaded" here because multiple "static" copies of CRT running in the same process space can cause problems. (And If I set it to "Multithreaded", my program will crash in very weird parts.) So I stick to "Multithreaded DLL", and everything goes fine. The problem is that since the DLL is generated by VS.NET 2003, it has dependency on MSVCR71.DLL and MSVCP71.DLL. I know I can ship these two files with my software package. But what if I don't want to do so? Can I dynamically link to the "latest available CRT" on users' computer? Can I link to an older version such as MSVCR60.DLL and MSVCP60.DLL?     - Windows Forms Application Template Not Listed I've been writing command line-based applications. Tonight I thought I'd get started with Windows applications, so I searched for some tutorials on the Windows API and many resources seemed to indicate the easiest way to create a GUI is using the Windows Forms Designer (From what I've read, it's similar to designing a GUI with Visual Basic). That sounded terrific. Unfortunately I seem to hit a snag at step 1. I don't have a Windows Forms Application template listed for my project options. Although I'm fairly new to C++ programming, I'm not a novice computer user. I've checked through every group of project options, verified installation options when installing the application, and searched a few search engines for similar problems, only stumbling upon one other mention of the same problem on a message board (two or three other people chimed in saying they had the same problem), but those posts stopped about 3 months back with no resolution. Is it the version of the program I'm using? Or do I need to download additional templates somewhere? (I couldn't find any mention of it at Microsoft's site). The closest option I have to a Windows Forms Application is an MFC Application, but that doesn't seem right. I'm using Visual C++ .NET Standard 2002. I've gone through all the documentation and examples in the MSDN Library for Task Scheduler but I'm flumoxed by an error when trying to add a task to the scheduler. I tried to change the LogOn for the Task Scheduler service to a Domain Account with local administrator rights, but restarting the service brings up a error: "Error 1709: The account specified for this service is different from the account specified for other services running in the same process." Maybe because the executable is svchost.exe, and there are a lot of processes running with that one. Anyway, the error I am seeing is probably indicitive of some other underlying security or permissions problem that may cause more difficulties further down the road, so I'm focused on getting this method working as it is, rather than looking at WMI, the TaskScheduler.dll from Site Server, or third party products.     - USB Programming / Interfacing Hello, I would like some quick and dirty USB information if possible to give me a feel for what I'm getting into and if I should take another approach. I am designing a non-speed-critical hardware peripheral that I would like to control with a Windows XP application without getting into a programming nightmare. Internally the hardware is parallel so conceptually I'd like to simply connect it to a generic uProcessor-style ADR/DATA/RD/WR parallel interface. Some various approaches to producing this parallel interface are: Go through the PC serial port, go through the PC parallel port, go through the PC USB port, go through a PCI card that translates to a generic RW parallel port, such as FPDP. With my limited Windows knowledge, it believe the only one of these directly supported by the Windows API is the RS-232 serial port, with the remainder all requiring add-on drivers. I've done a lot of RS-232 serial programming in the past but its popularity is waning. So, my thinking is that USB would be a reasonable choice since it seems to have the brightest future among those I listed. I have looked at the numerous USB resources out there and what I'm after at this point is a thumbnail sketch of what I might need to do on both the host and client sides of USB, or maybe not use USB at all. On the host side: 1. Is there any standard API support for USB programming in any of the VS C/C++/MFC/C# libraries? 2. What would my program need to do to read/write data to an arbitrary USB peripheral? On the client side: 1. It appears that there are standard USB interface ICs available that take care of the USB protocol dirty work and transparently provide some sort of generic parallel interface to my hardware when all is said and done. When I try to use the precompiled headers for another project Visual Studio .NET reports an error stating that the .pdb file used by the current project isn't the same .pdb that was used when the precompiled headers were created.     - HELP on "C" DLL internal code for LAN's and WAN's use To all wizards: I have a "C" DLL file already built and running, but I want to have the DLL accessible(callable) from anyway within a LAN and/or WAN( and even multi-WAN's), or even on a PC. I built the DLL file, via VC++'s (v6.0) ATL COM AppWizard area, and it works quite well. But as for using the DLL file on LAN's and Wan's, do I need to add any more code into the DLL file, so it will work on/under a network and be callable anywhere on a LAN's or WAN's or even on standalones by any and all application(s).     - Stealth activation of exe upon right-button -down event? I appologise for bringing this here, however I don't know of more savvy group of folks to ask this question to. I was in the process of deleteing an exe, I decided to not install it. It took about 3-5 seconds for my right-click menu to activate.     - Using STL with classes generated dynamically Hi -- I am currently working on a Forth-inspired virtual machine that I use as a run-time for executing domain-specific languages that are generated on the fly from visual models. This machine is created out of thin air at runtime by writing Intel assembler codes into memory for the 32 primitive instructions, the execution engine and for a rudimentary parser that can interpret and compile Forth instruction streams. Once this initialization is done, then the Forth machine accepts streams of forth words and bootstraps itself into a more full-fledged execution environment that includes a type system, classes, an intel code assembler, floating point math, etc. This is all kicked off from within some host program that must be written in a language that supports writing bytes to memory and then jumping to one of these locations to execute the code thus assembled. (I've tried to keep the host requirements limited to these two so that this scheme can also eventually work in an embedded environment with only ROM-based byte sequences to kick it off.) Please bear with me and I will get to my queson in one second; I just have to talk about one more thing to frame it correctly. The runtime environment that emerges from this scheme involves a few different levels: there's the basic intel assembler level that I have access to through the virtual machine; there's the virtual machine itself, which executes any named sequence of the underlying primitives that has been compiled into the system's code dictionary or that is presented to it for run-time interpretation (or any sequence of other such named sequences) ; and then there's the runtime of the host program. While I'm trying to keep the virtual machine simple and capable of executing in just about any environment that satisfies the two requirements I mentioned earlier and that has had an appropriate execution engine generated for it, I also want it to be able, when it's useful, to interact with both the underlying processor and with the host executable environment. I accomplish this through two of the primitives -- one that executes underlying assembly code and the other that makes far calls to the host environment. This presents a great degree of choice about which level to program specific functionality at and allows me to use facilities of a host language to handle stuff that had not yet made its way into the forth-based portable environment or that can be handled better by the host in a context where I am willing to sacrifice portability. More specifically (and more relevant to this newsgroup) when the host programming environment is a C++ executable, I would like to enable as much interaction as possible with the C++ run-time. For example I have a project coming up for a client for a simulation system for which I would like to be able to use the STL and the C++/CLI extensions for the .NET framework library. So here's my question. I want to use the type-generating and dynamic execution capabilities of my embedded Forth environment to create execution streams on the fly from visual models that the user creates and manipulates at run-time. On the other hand, in the course of executing these I would like to leverage STL containers and algorithms to take advantage of rich programming facilities like Boost and Loki (in particular the Boost Graph Library). Now I realize that by the time my application runs, code templates are gone and the only thing that remains of them are type-specific classes that have been expanded at compile time. So my original thought to somehow create new expansions with my dynamically generated types is impossible, since at that point there is nothing to expand from. However, I'm envisioning something like the following, and would just like some basic validation on whether it seems feasible to minds more experienced and wise than my own: If I gnerate my dynamic types in such a way that they are set up in memory exactly like C++ would set up its own objects, then I should be able to pass pointers to them as parameters in far calls to C++ functions and the C++ functions shouldn't know the difference. Right? (I already know this is true with simple structures, because that's how I'm invoking OS calls.) And continuing along this path, if I compile into the C++ host a template expansion of say, an STL vector or a map that has as its value type paramater a pointer to some class, then I should be able to generate my own forth types in such a way that they are set up in memory as though they inherited from this base class type. And I should be able to pass instances pointers of these classes in calls to the corresponding push_back() or find() functions of my STL container classes. As long as the instance pointed to has a correctly constructed vtable, I should be okay. Right? And the same concept should, I'm imagining, hold true for functors that I might want to pass as predicates to STL algorithms. And in fact, if I set up my functor objects so that they appear correctly to derive from the actual type I specified in the C++ template expansion, then the actual predicate functors that I pass could be typed to be aware of the actual type of object that I passed to the container as a value type and could do type-specific manipulations on those objects. I've probably lost y'all by now and of course you might ask "Why don't you just try it and see?". Unfortuinately, I'm currently doing major surgery on my underlying execution engine and am not in a position to test this out, since I didn't have the foresight to preserve a working version that would allow me to test. (Idiot!) Yet I need to decide if this approach is even feasible as I will be specing the system out for the client over the next few weeks and would love to have the comfort of knowing that I have available the full expressive power of the STL in addition to my dyamic execution engine. I realize that if my value type for the STL containers is a pointer to something, then I will have to use proper iterators that are able to call comparison functions and the like dynamically (Boost has this already, I believe). I also realize that this totally violates the spirit of compile-time template expansion type safety. But given my circumstances, I don't think I should have to give up the STL just because my needs are a little exotic. Whoever's still with me, thanks very much for slogging through this. I'd appreciate very much some informed view of the feasibility of what I've described here. And if you feel really charitable, any insights into how to generate well-formed objects with correctly formulated vtables would also be lovely.
