I've already "created" my gui's using the drag/drop utility in Express. (I think this applies to mfc & C++ & debugging, hence the 3 NG) OK, maybe this'll be some kind of rant, but I really don't get it and it would really be nice to know what the rationale behind the "built-in" memory leak detection of MFC is, when any user could provide it on his own without false memory leaks ... Explanation: The Run-Time Library provides for Debug Routines that (among other things) allow reporting of memory-leaks. It is possible to enable *automatic* reporting for the CRT by calling the function _CrtSetDbgFlag(...) with the _CRTDBG_LEAK_CHECK_DF flag. If you choose to enable this *automatic* check in your C++ program, the CRT will happily (and most correctly) report all left-over memory via _CrtDumpMemoryLeaks *after* basically all non-system DLLs have been unloaded. It is quite horrible if you use a 3rd party C++ DLL that happens to hold memory in global static objects that will only be destroyed when this DLL is unloaded and does *not* link against MFC. That is because in all my test cases any user-supplied DLL (project dependency, via Linker-Input:lib) is always unloaded *after* the MFC-DLL (mfc80ud.dll in my case). In this scenario the stupid call of _CrtDumpMemoryLeaks from the MFC cleanup code will report all this memory as leaks, even though it *will* be cleaned up --- it just happens that the code had the cheek to not use MFC. * You can't work around it, as you cannot change DLL (static) load/unload order. * You can't work around it, as you cannot use a C++ DLL with LoadLibrary/FreeLibrary. * You can't work around it, as you cannot tell MFC not to report this false memleaks and use the CRT mechanism instead. * You can't work around it, as your main application needs to use MFC. * You can't work around it, as the 3rd party DLL cannot, in general, be made to link against MFC (thereby forcing a later unload of mfc80ud.dll) * You can't even ignore the MFC dump and additionally use the CRT dump as MFC will switch it off after it dumped! Bah! So ... I'm stuck with a program that dumps 2000 memory leaks at MFC-cleanup that are false and will obscure any real (and possibly problematic) memleaks I would like to find ...     - VC++2008: STL access violation depending on runtime library being Hello We encountered a strange access violation in an application we're working on. I managed to distill the problem down to a dozen lines of code and find the cause, which lies in the choice of runtime library, not in the code itself. The bug, if it indeed is a bug, is reproduceable. Following are steps to reproduce the problem in VC++2008. We haven't tried reproducing it under an older development environment yet. 1. Create a new empty Win32 Console Application project 2. Add a new CPP file to the project and paste the following code: #include <sstream> struct Test { ~Test () { std::stringstream s1; } } G_Test; int main () { std::stringstream s2; } 3. Compile and run: should work 4. Open the project's properties, change the runtime lib from multithreaded debug DLL (the default in VC++2008) to multithreaded debug. So, from /MDd to /MTd. 5. Compile and run: you should get an access violation resulting from Line 6 of my example (the instanciation of s1). 6. Comment out Line 11 (the instanciation of s2), recompile and run: no more access violation. The access violation happens during the destruction of G_Test, in ~Test, during the construction of s1. If you look at the call stack, you'll notice the stringstream constructor makes a call that ends up resulting in an access violation. The actual line of code that causes the violation is in 'xlocale', and depends on the build (debug or release) and the runtime (debug or release); it's always a call to 'widen', 'do_widen', or something similar. When looking at the assembly, the application seems to be trying to read a function's address from an invalid location (read access violation) just prior to attempting to call that address. We're thinking that something in the STL, or in Microsoft's implementation of the STL in some of the VC++2008 runtimes, gives us an undefined behavior when trying to instanciate a stream after an application returns, but before the globals run out of scope (so basically in the app's exit/doexit, after main() returns). The error depends on whether or not another stream has been instanciated before the app's termination or not (as demonstrated by commenting out the instanciation of 's2' in my example). It would seem that the non-DLL runtimes are trying to make a call to a function that has been deaddressed, but the DLL runtimes make the call properly. It's an easy enough problem for us to work around, but I'd like to know if this is expected behavior coming from the STL in VC++2008, and if I properly understood the cause of the problem. We do have a valid reason for using a global in our application (it's a singleton instance of our logging system), and we do know how to work around it (make sure it gets deleted before our WinMain returns), but I wanted to bring up this issue here in case it's an actual bug in VC++2008, and not an unexpected behavior resulting from our misuse of the STL. Maybe the STL cannot be used after an application's main function returns? (I'm not sure if the STL has startup and cleanup code). I'd appreciate any input -- apologies for the long post!     - Getting IP Address with getaddrinfo() I am thinking this is another Igor Tandetnik question;) I am coding on VC9 and need to get the IP address of the local machine so I can log it. It appears the modern way to do that is via the getaddrinfo() function, which I am successfully calling. I see the data I am looking for in the link list of addrinfo's, but problem is I am not seeing documentation on how to interpret the sockaddr. I see that there are a number of sockaddr stucts, some in, some out, some IPv4, others Ipv6. Also, when it is IPv4, I don't see any info on which bytes are the IP address. Looking at it in memory I can figure it out, but I am sure there is a better way to figure it out then just guess.     - disable a memory block from swapping to hard disk Hi, I have a problem in a vc applciation (MFC). Once in a while it gives BSOD, "PAGE_FAULT_IN_NON_PAGED_AREA". If I turn off Hyper threading, it seems there would be no problem. I guess if I force some small memory parts to be always in RAM (and not swap to harddisk as virual memory), this problem would be solved,I mean the memory parts that are used by a ADC Card device driver. how Can I froce that memory block, to be always in RAM and not swap to hard?     - is there a way to set the version information from the program I was wondering if there was a way to set the version information from within the program. I have a prograqm which is compiled with different #defines to make slightly different versions. Since I have to set these #defines when I compile the program anyway I was wondering if I could set the Version Information to match. Currently for each version I have to go in and manually change it in the resource Script by hand using the resource editor. There are commands to GetVersionEx is there anything like a SetVersionEx? I want the fields in the version information to reflect each particular version. Also in a related matter, when I click on properties for an .exe file there is a "Summary" page. How can I access and set the fields on this page (like Title, Subject, Comments, Keywords, etc.) from the program? Or from the editor for that matter.     - Time measurement problem during task switching Hi everybody, I written a DLL to interface with a custom PCI device; manufacturer provides me via another DLL some functions to write and read bytes to device and some other to know if board is ready to accept or send data. What I need is to implement a timeout mechanism when my DLL has to wait for some data, I've used timeGetTime function to measure elapsed time from waiting start but if some other heavy processes are running seems that my waiting routine is interrupted and when scheduler gives me the control again a time greater than timeout is elapsed so I return with an error. Is there a better way to do it or the only solution is too increase a lot the timeout I use ? Thanks in advance. I don't really understand what you mean.
Are you talking about the ways to automatically run a windows application?
