Am am attempting to install VC6 and VB6 on a new "XP Media Edition" machine,
and for both the setup.exe posts a fatal error and closes immediately.
Anyone have solution?

Much appreciated,

Install a newer product. VC6 has been an insupported product for quite some
time now.

We are in the process of porting the application to a newer compiler, but as
yet it only compiles under VC6. We hoped to be able to do this on a newer
machine.

There are a lot of people still using VC6, and especially VB6, so hopefully
there is a fix for this MS bug.

Hardly a bug, VC6 and VB6 where not designed for the OS your attempting to
install it on and as Carl has pointed out, they are no longer supported.
That being said, I run Windows XP sp2 and have no problems using it. I
would suggest using an earlier version of XP rather than the Media version.
Then if you must attempt to upgrade to the Media version with it already
installed.

It should work on XP, although I am not certain about XP Media Edition.
These products are not supported by MSFT but work fine on most current
platforms as long as you have the latest service packs. I have XP and I
currently run VC6, VS2003 and VS2005 without any problem.

You're advising him to install the latest service packs, right? Visual
Studio 6 SP6?

But in order to install Visual Studio 6 SP6, first he has to install Visual
Studio 6, right? And when he tries to do this, setup.exe posts a fatal
error and closes immediately.

I think that goes without saying. Otherwise it would not mean anything.
IOW, I was suggesting to OP to not forget to install service packs
after installation of the product(if its possible).

I haven't used setup.exe for V6 for several hardware/OS upgrades. Just
copy the subtree in Program Files.

Don't you have to copy a bunch of registry entries too?
