However, shouldn't we call this function this way: i.operator++; instead of as shown: ++i; and furthermore why is the compiler accepting this if the function will return a reference to an object. Nothing gets assigned from the return of "++i;" ? I understand the statement a few lines down the program which is: Counter a = ++i; Here at least the reference is assigned to a new object!     - (MFC) How to use messages to communicate between CMDIFrameWnd and CScrollView? Alright, so I tried to use AfxGetMainWnd() from inside a CScrollView-derived class to access a function inside of a CMDIFrameWnd-derived class.     - Incrementing a pointer to a one-past-the-end value? I wonder if the C++ standard says what should happen if I increment a pointer to a one-past-the-end value. I think it says that it is perfectly legal to increment a pointer to the last element element in an array - I get a pointer to one-past-the-end value. It is guaranteed that such a value exists for any array, so I always get a valid pointer to something (I do not care what it is). So, my question is what if I go further and increment a pointer to a one-past-the-end value? Do I still get a valid pointer to anything?     - Where did my warnings go? Hello! I am using Visual C++ 6.0 for a major project which contains a lot of conversions between float and int, as well as comparisons between signed and unsigned integer types. The warning level is set to 3, so I should get many C4244 and C4245 warnings when compiling the code, but I never did. Then I used the STLport to compile my project and I was suddenly faced with hundreds of warnings, many of them where C4244 and C4245. I spent hours entering type casts into my code, so that those warnings would disappear. I thought that my compiler somehow "woke up" and gave me the warnings it should have given me years ago... But when I switched back to Microsoft's implementation of the STL, the warnings disappeared again. I found out that the STLport uses pragmas to influence the compiler's behaviour for warnings, apparently activating them. However, the default behaviour is to *issue* these warnings, not to suppress them - so there must be some corresponding pragmas in the Windows header files, too. I do want these warnings, so my current workaround is a #pragma warning( default : 4244 4245 ) after including any Windows header files. It does not work when I put this pragma *before* those include statements, which encourages me in thinking that Microsoft's header files are messing around with the compilers warning behaviour. Does anyone happen to know whether there is a macro that must be defined for the project in order to get the default behaviour? I see no point in setting the warning level to 3 in order to get warnings and then let those Windows headers spoil everything.     - Assigning apartment to a COM component Hi, I have the following problem: I am getting two independent COM components (say A and B) assigned a single STA. One of the components (say A) calls a method on a third component C (in a different STA) that may in turn possibly go out-of-proc from C. Now as soon as this call goes out-of-proc, a call on component B, which was waiting outside the apartment all this time (as calls to STA are serialized by COM), suddenly enters the STA and starts processing. Now, when the out-of-proc call returns to C and then eventually back to A, it has nowhere to return, as the thread is already in use by B! I thought if A and B always belong to different STAs of their own, this problem will not occur. In that regard, is there any way which can ensure that a COM component with threadingmodel=Apartment (STA), after it is CoCreated, will always lie in a different new STA, and not join any other already existing STA?     - How to get the physical device name of dynamic volume in dynamic disk? As we know, the Windows API QueryDosDevice() can get the physical device name of a partition or volume in a basic disk. But it doesn't work if the volume is a dynamic volume in a dynamic disk.(Actually, the API will return a fake name.) For example, there are 2 disks in my computer, one is a basic disk and another is a dynamic disk. The basic disk has 2 volumes, with drive letter C: and D:, and the dynamic disk also has 2 volumes (dynamic volumes), with drive letter E: and F:. Get the physical device names of those volumes by API QueryDosDevice(): C: - \Device\HarddiskVolume1 D: - \Device\HarddiskVolume2 E: - \Device\HarddiskDmVolumes\MybondDg0\Volume1 F: - \Device\HarddiskDmVolumes\MybondDg0\Volume2 (Note: the string "mybond" is the specified personal name when i installed the OS, which is Windows 2000 Professional with SP4.) Then, I use a filter driver, which is built on sfilter in Windows IFS Kit, to catch the IRP_MJ_CREATE IRPs when accessing those volumes, and get those volumes's physical device names like following: C: - \Device\HarddiskVolume1 D: - \Device\HarddiskVolume2 E: - \Device\HarddiskDmVolumes\PhysicalDmVolumes\BlockVolume1 F: - \Device\HarddiskDmVolumes\PhysicalDmVolumes\BlockVolume2 Comparing the above two different names, we can find out that QueryDosDevice() couldn't get the true physical device name of a dynamic volume. So, how can I get the true name like: \Device\HarddiskDmVolumes\PhysicalDmVolumes\BlockVolume1 not \Device\HarddiskDmVolumes\MybondDg0\Volume1?     - Converting local times to UTC I have seen a lot of examples of converting UTC into local time, but none for the other way around. I have written a log file converter that needs to convert between 2 different formats. The first file format has its times specified as local time, and the second has times specified as UTC. As yet, I have the date/time as a DATE, a SYSTEMTIME, a time_t and a struct tm, the contents of all of them are specified in local time. None of these formats seem to have a field or way of specifiying a time zone in them. I thought I could simply use the gmtime(time_t) function to perform the conversion. But it just gave out the same number as I gave in, so I am not sure what the point is. Then I read about the _tzset() function that prepares the time zone variables for the converter functions. However calling this function (before calling gmtime) has no effect. It appears from the gmtime documentation, that this function always assumes the input is in UTC which seems strange to me, as thats what its output is supposed to be.     - Novice question - Pointers in a function Hi folks, I have seen some example code which is structured as follows. There is a function declared in a header file and defined in a cpp file. For simplicity I will call this function myFunc(). In the cpp file it is defined as follows (note, I have made it simpler for clarity) - void myFunc(int myInt, double *input, double *output) { // Perform some computation.... // // Finally output = some_value; } Now, in a seperate cpp file I use this function so I include the header file for the above function myFunc(). In the cpp file where I use the function I use it as follows - double fIn, fOut; double result; fIn = some_value; myFunc(1, fIn, fOut) result = fOut; The bit that is confusing me is the last bit i.e. result = fOut; I noticed that where myFunc() is defined it does not return any values, so I am wondering how can result 'get the value of' fOut? I realise it must be something to do with the fact that myFunc() takes fOut as a pointer, but I'm not sure about the exact underlying mechanism that causes this to happen? Generally speaking, am I right to think that by passing fOut into the function where it is accepted as a pointer, causes fOut to get set to the same value as 'output' in myFunc() Thanks for any help with this! Now, to avoid redefining the class, I included the header in both projects. In order to relieve my self from recompiling, I let the server (project 1) compile this file, and I added the client (project 2) the object file. Now here is the funny thingâ?¦ I have a clean constructor to this class (no parameters) which is called without a problem from the object file. Any method declared works very well, BUT the ones that has wchar_t * as parameters. If I use _CRTDBG_MAP_ALLOC instead of CRTDBG_MAP_ALLOC in a test program, I can see the offending line numbers and source file get printed out.     - GetDIBits is returning 0 hi, i'm geting de bits of to bitmaps into a buffer in order to compare then. the first time i call GetDIBits, it works ok, and returns the number of scanlines an correct data in the buffer. the second time, it returns 0 and does nothing in the baffer. if i change the order of the calls, the second still fails. i know that then bitmaps must not be selected on any DC, and i'm carefully with that. ¿¿any reason why GetDIBits returns 0??     - reversing bit order Hi folks - I'm writing some code for a checksum algorithm and I need to reverse the order of bits in an unsigned char array, in 4-bit chunks (half byte, or nibble). Example.. the array contains BYTE data: 0001 0110, 0000 0010, 1000 0000 0x16, 0x02, 0x80 Each nibble gets reversed: 1000 0110, 0000 0100, 0001 0000 0x86, 0x04, 0x10 Each nibble will then be added and the results become a checksum nibble. I can do this brute force, one bit at a time, but I'm hoping someone out there will recognize a possible elegant solution. There will always be 5 bytes (40 bits, 10 nibbles) to deal with. Any ideas?     - Using WebBrowser Control, how to Navigate w/o displaying the HTML page. I built an MFC project of the SDI type, hosting a WebBrowser Control. Everything seems to behave properly. I am using the Navigate(LPCTSTR URL) to get web pages. Is it possible and if so how to perform all the functionality of the Navigate() w/o display the page? There is a method called SetVisible(false/true) but when trying to use it, it creates an exception. With and w/o regard to the above question, Is it preferred to have a host of the MDI (or top level MDI) type, as to separate between the host's GUI window and the window in which the WebBrowser Control displays a page (that is if I allow it to do that)?
