    - How to read a std::string of known length from binary stream? Hi, (This should probably go to comp.lang.c++, but I could not find server for posting. Sorry.) I try to read and unpack records from a binary file. The records contain also a part of variable, but known length -- say filename -- the length of which is stored in the fixed part of the record. (I.e. the record itself has variable length.) The variable part is not ASCIIZ -- no terminating zero character. I am using ifstream object to extract the fixed part of the record into char buf[known_size]. Then I extract the parts and using the reinterpret_cast I store them in member variables of the object that represents the record -- like... char buf[46]; fin.read(buf, sizeof(buf)); ... m_fname_len = *reinterpret_cast<unsigned short *>(&buf[28]); No problem here. But once I know the filename length, I want to read that filename into std::string member variable. I could do something like that (not heavily tested): char * p = static_cast<char *>(malloc(m_fname_len)); if (p) { fin.read(p, m_fname_len); m_filename.assign(p, m_fname_len); free(p); } Can something similar -- I mean reading a fixed size string from a stream into std::string -- be done more elegantly, without need to allocate an extra buffer?     - rookie's question about using clipboard I was reading Charles Petzold's "Programming Windows" book. In the Clipboard chapter, the author says that every "OpenClipboard()" function call should be followed by a "CloseClipboard()". But in the Blowup.c example (Figure 14-21), there isn't a CloseClipboard() call after OpenClipboard(). (page 719, under "case IDM_EDIT_COPY") And the program runs fine.     - Input Box I thought this would be easy but I can't seem to find an easy way for the standard input box in Win32 API. Like in Javascript or VB, the messagebox like popup comes up but allows the user to enter text. Common dialog Library allows for file open and advance dialogs like that.     - LoadLibrary Fail Dear all, I have created a COM (hoken.dll) and I also created a simple project to test this component.     - Wait for file to be done writing Hi, Application 1 writes HTML files, application 2 sets a hook in the HTML files (it knows their names, that's not a point) using FindFirstChangeNotification. When application 1 opens a HTML file, application 2 is notified of a change, so it will show the empty file (rather than the new, finished file), as application 1 truncates the file for the new writing. So I don't really want to wait for the "first change", I want to wait for the "done writing" notification... if it would exist. Application 1 and 2 are both mine (it's actually the same executable binary, but that aside) so I'm happy to solve it on either side if you have any suggestions. What I've been thinking of is to try to open with shareDenyWrite (from within application 2). But there are problems such as: I don't really want application 2 to start running in circles until it can "finally" acquire the shareDenyWrite type open; and: can application 2 actually achieve shareDenyWrite if it is reading the HTML files on a read-only network drive?     - extern and class I have a header file, General.h, that is the only header file for a project that has three .cpp files. General.h has extern definitions for many global variables and function prototypes. General.h also has a single class definition. When compiling I get this error general.h(82) : error C2143: syntax error : missing ';' before '*' when I have the following arrangement extern CBitmapFile * pCBitmap_faces; // other stuff class CBitmapFile { // class contents defn?. }; I do not get error C2143 if extern CBitmapFile * pCBitmap_faces; Comes after the class definition.     - Can We Set the L-value of in.eof()? It looks like there is a bug in a loop like (while in.eof()) in.getline(line); ... ... {} when we work repeatedly on the same file. We open the file "in" (ifstream), work on it and reach its end of file. When we seekg to the file's beginning, we cannot use the above loop again.     - Function forwarding Hello, I came across interesting linker behavior while trying to include a function forwarder into my DLL (I use Visual C++ 6.0 SP 5). Suppose I have mydll.dll and I want MyHtonl in this DLL to be forwarded to wsock32.htonl. Also I want to link implicitly (that is, using the import library) with mydll.dll. So I include the following lines into the .def file: EXPORTS MyHtonl = wsock32.htonl I get MyHtonl exported from mydll.dll and mydll.lib contains two symbols: MyHtonl and __imp_MyHtonl. Looks reasonable, but this is not what I want. Since I want to link implicitly and the original htonl uses __stdcall calling convention, I need _MyHtonl@4 and __imp__MyHtonl@4 symbols in the import library. Now when I try to fix it by specifying the decorated name in the .def file EXPORTS _MyHtonl@4 = wsock32.htonl I get pretty interesing results: the name that appears in the export table is _MyHtonl, and the import library contains __MyHtonl@4@4 and __imp___MyHtonl@4@4. Weird. The linker seems to be triggered by '@' character in the function name, so if I write EXPORTS @MyHtonl = wsock32.htonl I get _@MyHtonl@4 and __imp__@MyHtonl@4 in the import library and empty (I never thought this is ever possible) function name in the export table. So, the question is, how it is possible to create a forwarder so that 1) the export table contains the undecorated function name; 2) the import library contains the properly decorated function name for __stdcall calling convention. I know that such forwarders exist in the system images. For example, kernel32.dll forwards EnterCriticalSection to ntdll.RtlEnterCriticalSection and both 1) and 2) are met. I wonder how Microsoft builds it. Do they use a special in-house tool or is it possible to achieve with publicly available tools? -- Alex Fedotov P.S.     - Uniquely identifying a thread *over time* Hi, The context: I have an application in which an object X makes a COM connection to some object. Different threads within the application all call methods on the one single object X that subsequently calls methods on the COM connection. For this a marshall stream is needed, as COM pointers are not thread safe. This marshalling requires some interthread communication which takes time. So I don't want to do that on every method call, but just once for each thread and then store the marshalled pointer mapped to that particular thread (sort of CMap<thread identifier, marshalled COM pointer>). Threads here "don't know" that they are at some point invoking COM communication, so I can't have them store the pointer. Also threads can be terminated and created on user request throughout the lifetime of the application. The question: how do I uniquely identify a thread. And the answer is NOT: thread handle or thread id. These are unique at a certain point in time. They are not over time! (Correct me if I'm wrong, but that's what extensive Googling learned ;-p) (I'm also happy with a different approach altogether. But then just for the pointer problem. I'm not planning on limiting all COM communication to the main thread and have the other threads send/post messages around, as many of you would suggest.)     - Web Cam Sample Hi. Does anyone know if there's a way to get a Web Cam to draw into a hidden buffer ? I am familiar with the APIs that start with "cap" like capCreateCaptureWindow() that are in "vfw32.lib". But those APIs require a visible Window in order to do anything. I dont want a window because i need to modify the pixels of the frames BEFORE they are shown. I looked at the "DirectShow Samples" , specificaly the sample : "VidCap" but it doesnt specify if its meant to be used as viewer for a WebCam or not.     - #import [out,retval] ? Hello, I wrote an ATL in-proc server for use with VBA and MFC. In the MFC code, I am using #import on the server's type library. MFC complains about interface methods with an [out,retval] parameter. I can add a second copy of the method to the interface with a new name and the [out,retval] changed to just [out]. This seems to work.     - can't define entry points in DLL Hi, I am writing a managed c++ library under .net. It has one class, brilliantly named Class1 which has one function FtoC. When I put the following line in the .def file EXPORTS ftoc=Class1::FtoC the linker gives the error unresolved external symbol Class1::FtoC What am I doing wrong? Also, I am doing this because I need to know the name of the function inside the dll to call it from lisp. I have the code for self deleting an executable, where the executable deletes itself at the end of assigned task; but I am not to make it work for self-restart. And then use "CreateIndierect()" to create the modeless dialog. The viewer cannot dislplay successfully. The screen only display the blank dialog.     - mfc wrapper not passing quit message Probably a weird and meaningless topic header :) Here's what I have: my application makes it own windows using win32api and such so I don't need MFC for that. But I do use MFC for a few things (eg easy wizard dialogs). So I cheated and did it the following way (which I assume is the normal way for this) BOOL CMyApp::InitInstance() { //make my windows while (GetMessage(&msg, NULL, 0, 0) > 0) { TranslateMessage(&msg); DispatchMessage(&msg); } //clean up code return FALSE; } Therefore I get MFC functionally without having to use MFC everywhere (I dislike MFC) Ok, now my problem. When windows shutdown I don't receive any notification, ie the clean up code doesn't get executed above. Any ideas on how I can catch the shutdown and therefore do some needed clean up code. "The instruction ********** referenced memory at "***********". The memory could not be read. Click OK to terminate the program. Click on CANCEL to debug the program.     - Memory mapped files Hi there, I've been looking at the MapViewOfFileEx() api to access a persistent large database. Specifically I need to stream parts of a large terrain database for visualisation. The data size is intially limited to a few hundred mb but may grow to be many gbs. Using the mapviewoffilex i can set a fixed address for my file create it then reload it at the same address and all my pointers etc into it are still valid. I cannot seem to find in the docs though any idea of how to choose an address the base address. Experimental figures work fine but if it broke in the field after a few revisions of windows it would be a nightmare. Is there a good way to pick the base address? Or am i going about this all wrong? Will the MSVC (v 6 sp5) C++ optimizer always disable inlining
for a (class) method that contains __asm code?
