 - Terminating processes My application, A say, lunches another one, B, - written somewhere else by someone else and of which I know nothing about the source code. B puts up a window showing some information. I do this with CreateProcess, and I would need my program to be able to shut B down again under various circumstances. One way of doing this appears to be with TerminateProcess (using the process handle I get back from CreateProcess). But the documentation warns me that this is a draconian operation only to be used in dire emergencies. Is there a better way?  - Problem closing handle Anyone any idea why I could get the following exception when debugging a COM module using VB: First-chance exception in VB.EXE (NTDLL.DLL): 0xC0000008: Invalid handle If I create a ReleaseMinSize module, VB just terminates, no messages or anything. The handle was opened OK and the file I created exists and contains the right data, it's just when CloseHandle(hFile) is called that the exception is thrown. I cannot understand what's causing it.  - Side-by-Side Assembles on XP -using mainfest for COM components Hi We have an App with COM dlls. I want to run old and new version of this App which contains different COM dll versions. I was curious if anyone has attempted Side-by-Side Assemblies on XP using a manifest??? I have a couple questions 1)Is this correct - There is a Application manifest for the EXE that lists all the dll's I want to use different versions of ?? If my App uses foo.dll and mydll.dll and foo.dll is the only one that may have multiple versions - this is the only dll that needs to be in the Application manifest??? 2)Every COM dll that I want to have multiple versions on the machine - I need to create an assemble manifest for that COM dll and the dlll will also be listed in the Application manifest??? Where do the assemble manifest get stored??? How does windows find them to read??? 3)The old and new app would have different versions of COM dlls. If I have a COM dll foo1.dll and that #imports of COM dlls foo2.dll and foo3.dll - do I list all 3 dll in the application manifest??? Do I need 1 assemble manifest for each dll??? 4)Do I need to list only the dll's that I know will be different between the 2 Apps???  - Explicitly calling constructors/destructors Suppose you have a memory pointer to some allocated memory and a class. How can you call the constructor of the class so that it operates on your memory? The same question goes for the destructor.  - new and delete operators for a class.. I want to add a new operator for one of my classes, that looks like this: void* operator new(size_t Size, void* tag); What should look like the delete operator? If I use something like this: void operator delete(void* Buffer, void* tag) it will not be called when I "delete" a class instance. If I use a delete operator like this: void operator delete(void* Buffer) It will be called, but I will get a complie warning because it's not matching my new operator.  - Using GDI+ in C++ Hi there, I'm having problems include gdiplus.h in my C++ application, I get a huge list of compiler errors.  - VC 7 DLL Export Hello, i want to create a dll with some exported functions. Normally this isnt a problem, but with VC 7 and my current problem ive got the following Linker warning/error: warning LNK4017: EXPORTS statement not supported for the target platform; ignored I created the project using the "Win32 Project->DLL" wizard. The function to export is defined as WINAPI and listed in the EXPORTS section of the def file.  - Do you think this is possible? I have a third party 'EXE' that contains a number of windows in it. By sending a message to the EXE I can get it open any screen. But I need this screen to be created in *my* windows app ! or at least to set the parent of the created form equal to my MDI ? Is this possible at all ?  - Buffer Overrun Hi, I'm working on a Direct3D Project. This might not relevant though but part of it has a DirectInput routine. The d3d app launches and exception throws at me saying that buffer is overrun and the app must be terminated. What most likely be the cause of buffer overruns?  - redrawing in control with Invalidate() I have a CStatic which displays a plot - X, Y axes, tickmarks, etc. I want to change scaling of the plot by entering new ranges of X and Y. I call an overriden OnPaint for that: CPlot::OnPaint() { this->Invalidate() CPaintDC dc(this); ... draw lines and labeles DeleteDC(dc); } The problem is that it gets redrawn on top of the prevous drawing, w/o first erasing the prevous drawing. I also tried InvalidateRec() w/o success. I guess I can fill the whole area with a background color, but this seems lame. A search of this group showed that Invalidate should work, but it doesn't!  - Assertion error when using Free (non-local pointer) Hi all, my application uses callback function in DLL (Written in C), The DLL sniff's the network card and then allocates new data dynamically using malloc() function , Then the data (pointer) passed to the host application (MFC), After I use the data and copying it, I'm trying to free the space using Free() But I get an Assertion error, After running step by step inside MS code I see that free() function check's if the new memory was allocated inside the current app (local) , if the memory wasn't allocated inside then Assertion error occur . How do I free memory from other application? [DLL] | | | | [App] steps : 1.. Application init the DLL and run it, the DLL now runs separately from the app . 2.. when ever the DLL find network data , it will allocate memory space ,and process incoming data 3.. Then it will notify the application using callback function, and pass the application a pointer to the new allocated space. 4.. the application uses the memory 5.. Application try to free the memory using the free function - Assertion Error !!!!! Env : Vs.net IDE (NO DotNet involved , pure c/c++ code .)  - Run-time stack frame checks - false alarm? I get a run-time check failure message, saying: "Run-Time Check Failure #2 - Stack aroung the variable ... was corrupted." 1. I'm almost sure that my stack is not corrupted! 2. When I copy the func to another file, rename the copy, and call the copy instead, the run-time check message does not show. UC : small P4 1.7 with 512 mb RAM. strangely, all seemed to compile propely with the VC++ 6.0 compiler. Some people tell me it's just that .net plain s***s. While i'm more of the GNU/F_OSS breed and tend to have these type of opinions, this time i don't have them, as i am slowly having respect for microsoft. so, did VC .net 2003 break the compiler? if so, does VC Whidbey un-break it?  - LNK4003: invalid library format -- why? I'm trying to compile and link a simple program which uses a third party DLL. When I try to link I get the error message "gci.dll : warning LNK4003: invalid library format; library ignored" I've run tool called Dependency Walker to take analyze the dll and it returned the information below, along with the warning: "Warning: At least one module has an unresolved import due to a missing export function in a delay-load dependent module." In the library warning messages are output to stderr. fprintf(stderr, "Hello"); My app crashes in the fprint if my app is compiled as 'Multithreaded DLL'(MSVCRT.lib).  - Exporting unmangled name from C DLL I'm new to the Microsoft C compiler and I'm having a problem. I'm trying to build a DLL from C source code and the compiler is exporting mangled names. I can't seem to figure out how to export unmangled names.  - re-sharing memory I am experiencing a problem where the data in a structure in shared memory is not being preserved. Process A creates the shared memory, spawns and passes the name to process B Process B opens and initialises the shared memory. All comunications between processes A and B work as expected. Process B then spawns another process (C) and passes it the name of the same shared memory. When Process C attempts to read an integer value in the shared memory, I am finding it to be set to a random large number, and not the value set by Process B. Note that I did not write Process A, nor design the structure used to share memory, I simply want to read and write values in processes B and C.  - Function pointers and dynamically loaded DLLs In my program, I load dynamically a DLL and I'm able to get a function pointer of type "int (__cdecl *)(void)" of any function in the DLL. If a DLL has a static class function, which calls the constructor and returns a pointer to the constructed instance of the class, then I don't have any problems. However, if a DLL doesn't have such static function, then I can't get it working. I'm able to get a function pointer to the class constructor, but I have no idea how to call the constructor in the way that that it also creates instance of the class (with 'operator new' obviously). Calling just the constructor, of course, doesn't return a valid instance of the class. The header of the DLL is basically like this: class dllclass { public: __declspec(dllexport) virtual ~dllclass(); __declspec(dllexport) dllclass(); __declspec(dllexport) virtual void dosomething1(); __declspec(dllexport) virtual void dosomething2(); __declspec(dllexport) virtual void dosomething3(); }; I cannot change the DLL, so that kind of workaround isn't possible. In CChildDlg.h I did: class CMainDlg; extern CMainDlg * g_pMainClass; This compiles fine, but when I try to use the pointer in CChildDlg.cpp, it says that CMainDlg is not defined. If I include CMainDlg.h into CChildDlg.cpp, as suggested by Igor, it complains about classes in CChildDlg.cpp being undefined. Could anyone help me with this?  - sendto() return WSAEINTR Hi all, Sorry that maybe I should not post it here, but it seems that HERE there are the experts. I wrote a program, which receive data from USB and then call sendto() to send the data to this machine's own network port, and then a download application will handle the packets. On one machine this program works well, but on many other machines, sendto() just return WSAEINTR. With this return value, I have no idea how to modify my program or do sth else to solve the problem.  - Strange unresolved external I have a WTL MDI application. I have a template class I am using as a base class for all docking windows. When the linker comes to linking the actual implementations (i.e. my properties window) it complains that GetSystemMetrics() is unresolved, even though it managed to resolve it just fine for the other places where I am using it.  - Exporting global data from a DLL to an EXE Hi, I have a "Win32 Application" and I must use some global data defined(and initialized) in a DLL linked to the Application. As suggested by MSDN,I have exported this global data from the DLL in this way: - In the DLL, I have used the keyword DLLEXPORT - In the EXE I have used the keyword DLLIMPORT But when I run the EXE the application crashes! The problem is that, in the EXE, the imported global data are all equal to zero and the application doesn't see the initializationsdone in the DLL! Does someone know where is the problem? For example, (1) I created 32*32, 4bit(16color) bitmap file without compression by Windows' Painter or just by VC's IDE Resource Editor; (2) Load it by LoadImage() from my harddiskm, or by LoadBitmap() from the Resource; (3)get BITMAP as follows, BITMAP bm; int iRet = GetObject(hBmp, sizeof(BITMAP), &bm); Then, I got bm.bmBitsPixel = 32(WHY NOT 4?)? And bm.bmWidthBytes = 128(WHY NOT 4) No matter the orignal file is 8bit(256color), 16bit, or 24bit, bm.bmBitsPixel always = 32, and bm.bmWidthBytes = 128.  - Best way to implement a double buffer drawing (flicker free) class. Hi I want to do basic class for flicker free drawing so that I can use it in my projects. I am still not sure what is the best way to do it. At the moment I have been doing it the following: class CFlickerFree { ... CBitmap m_bmBackGroundBitmap; CBitmap m_bmMemBitmap; CDC m_dcMemBackGround; CDC m_dcMemDC; ... }; So the pair m_bmBackGroundBitmap/m_dcMemBackGround is used to store (permanently) the background of the window (for example the wooden chess board - without pieces), and the pair m_bmMemBitmap/m_dcMemDC is used for drawing the current situation (a chess board with pieces,,, someone moved ...), so it holds temporary the current picture (drawn to the screen). So on windows class OnDraw() funktion, I will just call: m_FlickerFree.Draw(pDC); where CFlickerFree m_FlickerFree; So CFlickerFree 's Draw does the actual BitBlt for pDC, and the picture can be seen on the windows client. Question regarding this: Is it good to have those memory DC's like I have so that they are members of the class *or* is it better to always create(/delete) them temporary on Draw-funktion (so that they are not members on CFlickerFree class)? Is it the same? I think the bitmap must be a class member (??),,, or could it be bettter to reload the bitmap every time you draw (I dont think so ..)? ''' Then another implementation question regarding this. Next I want to create a class taking care of moving bitmaps/sprites --- this could be for example a chess piece picture on the board. Is it a good idea to first create a CFlickerFree object for the chess board picture, and then create another similar , say CPiece, class which again holds the memory CDC and corresponding bitmat objects (for the piece piecture) as a *members* of this class? And then first BitBlt this CPiece object onto CFlickerFree and after that call CFlickerFree 's Draw funktion with Windows pDC parameter to bitblt the whole picture onto the screen? Any better idea?  - namespace giving C2059 I am trying to port some code to Visual C++.net from codewarrior. My code defines a struct "vec3" which apparently conflicts with something in directx (somehow it worked fine in codewarrior). To solve this I tried putting my declarations in a namespace like this: namespace sk { struct vec3 { // my stuff }; // other declarations } This gives error C2059: syntax error : 'namespace' which points right to line 1. Every namespace dec in the code (including those that have always worked in codewarrior) seems to be giving this error, EXCEPT in modules that don't include any win32 header files. Generally, if and when I get a DR WATSON report from a customer, I can use this to zoom in on the fault in our code simply by looking at the OP codes in the report and finding it in our COD files. In most cases, this is sufficient to find whatever is the problem. In my last release I added a C++ exception trap and it is now recording the fault in my own custom log file.  - CRichEdit2View msftedit.dll RichEdit50w msftedit_class I'm trying to use a CRichEditView in VC++ .NET 2003, but I want it to conform to RTF 4.1 or 5.0, using msftedit.dll. I've tried everything I can, but I can't get it to stop trying to load riched20.dll. I've noticed that Wordpad in XP will handle the new RTF, but the WORDPAD example in VC.NET will not. When I look at the XP Wordpad with a hex editor, I see references to CRichEdit2View, which is not documented anywhere I can find. Looks like MS has developed a new class to handle the new msftedit.dll, but hasn't passed that on to anyone. Does anyone have the source code for the new XP Wordpad, or an MFC Class that implements RichEdit50W? I've tried modifying afxrich.h, richedit.h, winctrl4.h, viewrich.h, etc., to use #define MSFTEDIT_CLASS L"RichEdit50W", but it's not working.
