    - What happened to Bobby Schmidt's "Deep C++"? So, I've been trying to find some of the issues of the MSDN magazine column "Deep C++" by Bobby Schmidt. They show up on a google search, but they only link to "Content not found" errors on msdn.microsoft.com. If I go to the msdnmag search page http://msdn.microsoft.com/msdnmag/find/default.aspx? and look for "Schmidt" by author or "Deep C++" by title, I get nothing.     - Want to create a function which returns a value obtained from a callback function Hello I want to write a C++ function which returns a Windows handle. I need to call a callback function to find the Window. The specific function is EnumChildWindows. As the final parameter of EnumChildWindows I can pass a pointer back to my class. so I can access class functions ok. I thought that I could have a member variable in the class which is an HWND. Then the this variable could be updated by EnumChildWindows if a window handle is found. then when the function returns I just take the value in the variable as the first found windows handle.     - Variable arguments & class objects... what's the "type" When a call to a function with variable arguments is made, such as any of the printf() family of functions, all of the actual parameters passed after the last formally defined argument get pushed on the stack after going thru some sort of type casting operation. Integral data types appear to all get cast into a numeric value equal to the machine architecture's native word size [e.g. 32-bits or 64-bits]. Likewise, pointer data values get treated the same way. What I'm interested in knowing for certain is how MS Visual C/C++ handles instances of class objects that are passed in this way. It appears that the address of the class object is what gets pushed on the stack, but what I can't tell is whether or not the compiler does this unconditionally or if it actually uses some sort of implicit conversion operator that by default uses the value of "this". If there is a data type that the class is being implicitly cast to, then what I really want to do is to provide my own overload of that conversion operator so that I can have something else, such as maybe a string buffer which the address of gets used instead of the class object's own address.     - Implementing HDS_DRAGDROP style of CHeaderCtrl Hi, I want to activate the HDS_DRAGDROP style of CHeaderCtrl (which is attached to my CListView). However, I never call CHeaderCtrl::Create() because the creation is done automatically when the CListView is created (so the code is hidden from a novice like me).     - Vista and NT Service architecture I need to transfer a simple NT Service module to Vista from Windows 2000 Server.     - LoadLibrary path problem Hello All I'm using LoadLibrary to load a DLL that comes from a third party company. The problenm is that LoadLibrary will only accept a fully qualified path to the DLL. A relative path returns error 126 (module not found) and a null HINSTANCE. Strangely a full path sets GetLastError() to 6 which is invlalid handle although all GetProcAddress calls work and the DLL functions ok. I am using MS C++ 7 on Windows XP Service Pack 2. Any ideas ?     - Changing file names in VS projects. Greetings, I have inherited a workspace with 2 projects in it. Looking at the directory I see that the .cpp files for the first created project are in the workspace directory and the .cpp files for the 2nd project are in a sub-folder. In the workspace and the new project folder there is a file named UsbHid.cpp. This does not cause a problem for VS but to avoid confusion for me and others I would like to rename the file in the sub-folder. It is more difficult than I thought. I can change the name by external means but the project clings to the old name. Is there a clean way to do this?     - static variables discarded by the VS.NET2003 linker Hi Everyone, I found a thread on that topic posted year 2004 but not satisfied with the information there. So I decided to raise that issue once again. In general the problem with VS.NET 2003 linker is that it will discard an object file containing definitions of global variables of any type/ class if nothing else in this file is referenced by other files in the project. Now I have the following case. In given source file I have definitions of several global variables that in contructor register itself in another global container object. Later in code any of these variables would be accessed via that global container. But what actually happens is that the linker decides to discard the object files and instances of these global variables are never created and registered in the container. I am not sure what should be the correct behaviour of the linker in that case but could anyone let me know how to overcome that problem and make the linker to include the needed object files without forcing it to include any object files from given library even if not referenced at all? Can we say that in my case objects are not referenced at all since even if they are not referenced directly still it is possible to be reference via the container object? Many thanks in advance!     - Why on earth are there no VC++ 2005 SP1 redists on downloads.microsoft.com? I mean, seriously, what gives? If you run a program needing SP1 on a machine with only the RTM redist you get what is probably one of the dumbest, most unhelpful, stupidest error messages imaginable. It's TOTALLY non-obvious that there's a version mismatch; the configuration information is not incorrect, it's just unfulfilled. depends even more helpfully suggests that the manifest may be corrupt. So why the hell aren't the redists on the website? The redists you have at the moment are useless for SP1 apps; what the hell's the point of even having them? The whole SxS is such a brain-damaged sorry-ass system. And how about fixing it so that the error messages aren't so totally worthless? Hi, I am trying to reduce the complexity of a set of classes I made a couple of years ago, what equates to a set of trees, for which I want to use std::list and avoid having to use direct pointers anywhere. I wish to have a class contain a list of itself, as so: class B; class A { public: std::list<B> List; typedef std::list<B>::iterator iterator; iterator begin() { return List.begin(); } }; class B { public: A m_a; }; My question is, provided I ensure there is no in class A referencing direct instances of B, can I be fairly certain im not launching into a world of c++ driven pain, for example no: class A { ... B GetSomething(); }; I expect that as long as thing that call items such as copy constructors or -> / * operators of list<B>::iterator are in cpp files there should be no issue. I have developed Server-Client Windows Forms .NET applications in VC++ .NET v2003. I have several problems re-establishin connection between peers. Below are my problem cases after closing of the first successfull communication; #1) I re-start the Server to accept connection requests. While it is waiting, I run the Client. It is connecting to server socket and waits for the data communication. But at this time, my server program is still waiting at "BeginAccept". Nothing changes at its status. #2) I re-start the Server to accept connection requests. While it is waiting, I run the Client. It gives 10061 WSAECONNREFUSED (Connection refused by host) #3) After first successful communication closing, I start the Client to connect to server 2-4 seconds later. It connects to a server socket however my server socket program is not started to accept connection requests at this time. Then, Client program waits for data communication. I checked the working TCP sockets with "netstat -n -o 2" command. After the closing of the first successfull communication, first server socket's status either TIME_WAIT and several seconds later CLOSE_WAIT, or when it TIME_WAIT, new connection is being set with same server IP:PORT with clietn socket (problems at #1 and #3) I shutdown and close my sockets using the same commands. I have give these functions these (admittedly meeningless) implementation: __declspec(dllexport) void foo(int bar[]) { bar = NULL; } __declspec(dllexport) void bar(int * bar) { bar = NULL; } The program compiles. If I look at the decorated names of the exported names in the dll they aren't the same though. foo gets a decorated names that indicates that it was declared as void foo(int * const bar). I'll have admit that the difference between "int *" and "int * const" in a function argument is irrelevant to the caller of the function, but is there a reason for this oddity, or is this just a mistake?     - Visual Studio 2005 include file error I have ported a 32 bit module to 64 bit. It does database and e-mail, and requires the inclusion of mapi and sql header files. These header files are pulled in from the platform SDK inclusion directory of Visual Studio 2005. So, Visual Studio 2005 has the following: MAPIDEFS.H declares: typedef ULONG BOOKMARK; SQLTYPES.H declares: typedef SQLULEN BOOKMARK; This worked fine in 32 bit because SQLULEN was typed as unsigned long. Under 64 bit, it is typed as UINT64. Of course, my module will not compile, without error, as a 64 bit application because of the redefinition of BOOKMARK Can someone suggest an elegant way of getting around this use of the same type name that is based on a different type? I know it is very likely due to wrong usage of COM task heap (CoTaskMemAlloc/SysAllocString API) but cannot track the source of a problem directly at the point of a crash -- it crashes in SysFreeString on an already released (elsewhere) memory. Putting some debugging effort in this reveals that at some (essentially random) point SysAllocString returns a block of memory already occupied by another BSTR. When the latter of corresponding SysFreeString calls is made, the program crashes. I have source files at hand, but there is too much of code to look with bare eyes... so I'm stuck. When I "Break All", I see a very short call stack for our main thread (much shorter than it should be) - only the top few entries are shown. My experience has always been that this inidctates stack corruption. I have directed the debugger to break as soon as an exception is thrown. This has been done for all exceptions, in particular "Stack memory corruption" under "Native run-time checks". However, this is not catching the problem. We have a very large application with many threads, so it's like hunting for a needle in a haystack. Furthermore, procurring BoundsChecker has been quashed from above. When it initializes, I launch a background thread (the idea is that the original thread processes the GUI and the background thread does other non-GUI tasks). At this point, Task manager is showing 2 threads for the process.. as I would expect. Now .. when the user starts an application-modal dialog, Task manager is suddenly showing 4 threads! When that dialog is dismissed, there are still 4 threads showing!
