    - Array of char pointers. If I had to say what "arr" is, I would say it is an array of pointers to chars. If so why is it intialized with strings instead of addresses? char *arr[] = { "a", "b", "c","dd", "eee" }; Also when looking at the values of the pointers (when they appear to be adjacent) they seem to decrease by at least 8 bytes ( two native size words?) even when the strings are a single character, which should be two bytes. So I am guessing they are on a stack if the addresses decrease but why 8 bytes each? Is it some type of linked list? Now I am confused. Did my friend told me wrong?? since my friend has alot experience on windows programming. ================ For me I believe static library (DLL) and static library (.Lib) is same thing expect DLL i need to export each function, which has abit more work. (since static library I do it the same as regular C++ programming) But I am still confused that a DLL project will have a DLL + a .Lib and I had been told it's less handy as static library.     - Compiler chooses conv ctor - why? Hello, In the following code conversion from class A object to class B object can be done in two ways: (1) by conversion function being member of class A (line 6); (2) by conversion constructor being member of class B (line 11). However conversion constructor is called. The sole way to make A::operator B() to be called is removing ,,const'' qualifiers (at lines 11 & 25). This causes that the only implicit conversion sequence goes throughout conversion function (declared at line 6). Why? It seems that according to 13.3 of ISO 14882 none of the sequences is better then other. Thus ambiguity should occur causing error.     - c++ event sink I have a function that will download XML from internet and load XML data into database. The function will take 5 - 20 minutes to finish. I heard I should use event sink (event listener) when function is finished the task, then it will notify the caller. So I am planning to create a seperate thread to do the long XML loading function by using - _beginthreadex() But how to create a notification / event sink / event listener in C++? any library can easily just a library function call? or any sample source code on the internet?     - wstring, wofstream, and encodings Hi All, I'm attempting to write a wstring to a file by way of wofstream. I'm getting compression on the stream (I presumed it is UTF-8, but maybe not). How/where do I invoke an alternate constructotor so that the stream stays wide (UTF-16)? This may be broken. wstring ws = L"wide" produces: 77 69 64 65 ('wide' using 7 bit/8 bit ASCII) When I change wstring ws = L"wide" to wstring ws = L"wide \u9aa8" (added the wchar_t for U+9AA8), the file is as follows: 77 69 64 65 6F ('wide' with garbage 6F) Any ideas?     - Moving projects to the newer version of VC++ I have inherited a lot of projects using VC++ 6, 2002, 2003 and 2005, most of them MFC based (hence cross-posting in 2 newsgroups). I intend to move all of them to 2008 over the time. I already moved some and did have to make some code changes, mostly due to the fact that newer compiler is more strict in conformance to C++ standard. The applications are producing the same result as far as I can see but I haven't performed any extensive testing. What concerns me is that changes in compiler and/or libraries can produce different executable with different behavior, and that difference may not be immediately obvious, however it will break our applications. Can those of you who had to move a lot of projects from one version of VC++ to another share your experiences? How much of a problem it has been? The class implements the "+-*/" and "=" operators so I can perform basic image processing on the image data. One of my calculations produces a temporary object in a for-loop. So my idea was to declare an auto_ptr in the loop. Here is my situation: for some apis windows wants me to give him a pointer to an interface. (ie implement him an interface) i have another dll that implements this interface and i can get it via a function. is it possible that i use that interface and reimplement one of its functions and send back my new interface to windows?so i can benefit from what has already implemented in that dll and also use my own? I somehow managed to do this,but maybe because i dont know the proper way when freeing interfaces i get errors.     - Is it possible to reposition window's menu bar? Hello, I tried this question in the microsoft.public.win32.programmer.ui, but nobody answered. I hope I'll be more lucky here. I have a requirement to make custom non-client area for main window. I handle the WM_NCPAINT message and draw window frame and window caption correctly. However, window's menu bar cannot be replaced and happens to be under the caption (custom caption is higher than the system one). I tried to make owner-drawn menu following the description from MSDN: "Using Menus" (section "Creating Owner-Drawn Menu Items") http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms647558.aspx However, I never get a chance to set new position for the menu bar. All I get is the WM_MEASUREITEM message where I can set height and width of an individual menu item. And then the WM_DRAWITEM message where I should draw the item on a given DC. I have no problem to draw the text of menu items at the arbitrary location of non-client area, but I cannot cause it to behave like a menu bar. Handling WM_NCHITTEST and returning HTMENU has no effect whatsoever. Should I handle the WM_NCLBUTTONDOWN message, too? Any other messages? I'll appreciate any advice.     - replicating default constructor's "non-initializing state" Situation: I have a simple struct that, say, holds a color (R, G, and B). I created my own constructors to ease its creation. As a result, I lose the default constructor. I dislike this, but it's easy to solve: I just make my own default constructor. Problem: My own default constructor is considered to be *initializing the variable* (even though it doesn't), whereas the original one does not. Thus, when I declare and use it before initializing it, the compiler no longer warns me. Question: Are there any compiler settings (even compiler specific ones; I am using MSVC++) that state MY default constructor behaves exactly like the regular default constructor?
