    - Enter / Leave Critical Section in different threads First, I thought that it was wrong to enter a critical section from one thread and then leave the same critical section from another thread. If the Leave call in the second thread has no effect (since it doesn't own it), the third thread should be blocked. But it was NOT. If the second thread doesn't call Leave, the third thread IS blocked which is as expected. To prevent critical section become undefined (when its owner thread dies), I put some sleep call in the code (certainly, real application should not use or minimize Sleep). Why a thread doesn't own a critical section could release the lock? Is there something wrong in the code so this is not a valid test? Another issue illustrated in the code is WaitForMultipleObject. The first parameter is the number of objects in handle array. in the above example, the object count should be 3. However, if I put it 3 over there, the call always returns as soon as ONE thread is done. So, my second question is why WaitForMultipleObject doesn't wait for all objects to signal? It is quite possible that the small program has a fundamental fault and hence, above issues are just my fault. In that case, I am eagerly waiting for someone to point it out. Thanks.     - LNK2019 problem My C program compiles, but I get LNK2019-errors during linking. The cause is some symbols that are defined in some C-files that are not in my project. In VS6, these files ended up under "External dependencies", and everything went smoothly. I am now using VS7. How do I tell "the system" that it needs to also compile (and link) these files, without taking them into my project (which I don't want to do, since it is a lot of files, which I didn't make)? I have a variable time in the number of days such as 1 to 366 and I was wondering if there is a simple function that will convert it to the month and day of the month. I can do it myself, but I was just wondering if there is an easy builtin function that I could use. I am using Visual C++.     - Need advice on creating COM interfaces Hello! I want to design a plug-in architecture for our application. It will be used to do conversion between data formats. I have the ideas thought out as C++ abstract base classes, and I would like to transfer this to the world of COM. We are currently using VC7.1, mostly in C++. Now I would like to get some tips on how to proceed. I don't have any experience creating COM servers. There seem to be so many options of how to define the interfaces: * Write interfaces in MIDL. This I don't really want to do (complex). * Write classes in C++ and use attributes (this will generate idl for me?) * Write interfaces in a .NET assembly, and #import them into C++. This sounds like the easiest way to get started. It is important that I am able to share our interfaces with 3rd parties that use Visual Studio. Let's say I choose the third option. If I understand correctly, I would distribute the .NET assembly with the interfaces. Anyone can then create COM servers that implement the interfaces. Is this a good way to do it? Where is the memory to store the "Hello World" string allocated? I guess it's in the module somewhere and is treated as const, in which case I should be using const char above right? I was searching the last 2 days for a solution, but without success.. So, my problem: I have a database with a table with one field which content is a arabic string. I get the data in the arabic general unicode format [0600-06FF]. BUT I have to convert this one into the Contextual Forms Unicode (depends on the position of the character e.g. Initial, Medial, Final and Isolated). Is there a algorithm in visual studio or in windows or something like that? I am not a specialist in arabic language, so I don't know in which case the character has to be in which form and code.     - File compression in .NET - for very large files Hi I want to compress and decomress files. There is GZipStream class in .Net. However this class requires to allocate buffer equal to the file length to zip it (at least all sample code I saw were like that). The file size in my case can be really very large and hence I want something which does not require to load entire file in memory. Is there any way?     - corrupt intellisense This post is just informative and relates to Visual Studio 2005. My Class View wasn't updating after changing variables in a class and was also showing a class that didn't exist in the solution (I had removed any reference to it and actually deleted the files). The solution compiled and ran without a problem. As a test, I deleted the solution's *.ncb file, the intellisense database. VS built a new database and the problem was solved.     - How can I generate a file dependent on linker output, which the linker then needs to generate the final dll using VS2005? I need to process the map file that's generated by link on a C++ project, in order to generate the the .DEF file I really want to link with. Effectively, I want to make only some of the exports from my DLL available, and also I want to reference them by ordinal only. For those of you who have looked at how MFC works, will recognize this as being similar to the method in MFC80.def I can't really see any way to do this, as there doesn't seem to be any simple way to run the link command again with similar arguments to those generated automatically. However, I did come up with this idea: Write a new program named link.exe that runs the original link command with the command line specified, then run whatever processing my program needs then run the link command again. Is there any easy way to get MSBUILD to use a different tool for link, like setting some environment variable or instance, or must I resort to making the search path for exe's find mine first? I then create a worker thread and pass that memory on for its use. The worker thread will call realloc() if required as the memory requirements grow. I want my program to interact with some windows in the foreign application, but only if it does not see a specific dialog, which resides in the foreign application. I can obtain the handle to the dialog. If the dialog box is not there, I want my code to interact, but if the handle is not NULL, I want my program to do something similar to WaitForSingleObject(). I've looked at the thread and process for the foreign application's main window and the dialog box I have an interest in, but both are same, so I can't just wait for the process. I can think of one method to solve my problem by injecting a new window procedure. However, this is lengthy, and I'm not in the mood to implement it.     - _SECURE_SCL=0 -> crash Hello, we heavily use the STL in our projects and with vc++ 7.1 the code runs 3 times faster as with v8.1 (in some cases even 100 times or more). For example, clearing a set with 1 million elements takes several minutes instead of one second or so. If _SECURE_SCL=0 is defined in some libraries, the application crashes because of incompatible containers and/or iterators. Therefore we have to disable _SECURE_SCL in all visual studio projects of our application. Is there a way to disable _SECURE_SCL only in some libraries? If this isn't possible, we can't give our binary libs to our customers, because they probably have _SECURE_SCL enabled. It looks like we have to live with this secure thing (which is unacceptable because it is very slow), switch back to 7.1 (that is impossible if our customers use v8) or use C-APIs for every lib we release (we do that now but it is costly and not very convenient for our customers).     - Share heap between DLL's I have a quite large project written originally in BC5, and I am currently porting it to Visual C++ (VS2005) using OWLNext (www.owlnext.com). The program itself is now "converted", and it is running, but with errors. The error that concerns me the most is that I get heap error when trying this simple thing: 1) Creating a char* 2) Setting this char* to a new duplicate of another char* - this is done in another DLL. 3) Deleting this char* Example code: void ParseLine(char* line) { char* xNumStr; xNumStr = strnewdup(line); delete[] xNumStr; } strnewdup is a part of OWL (and owl-dll) and goes like this: strnewdup(const char* s, size_t allocSize) { if (!s) s = ""; int alloc = max(strlen(s)+1, allocSize); return strcpy(new char[alloc], s); } It's the delete[] in ParseLine that gives the error, which states that the heap is corrupt (I am running in debug-mode). If I move the strcpy-call from owl-dll to within ParseLine code, I get no error. This code works in BC5, but not in VC. I suspect it has to do with the heap being private for each DLL, but I'm not sure. If I need to change the code, I have to do it hundredths of places, and I really do not want to do that.     - issue using a dll hi all, i am using zlibwapi.dll from "zlib123dll.zip" (i downloaded it from the minizip site -> http://www.winimage.com/zLibDll/minizip.html ). this dll provides functions for zipping / unzipping files. i am getting stuck in usage of the 'unzLocateFile' function. i am loading the dll using LoadLibrary, and getting the address of the function using GetProcAddress.
