    - Access Violation in Unicode Debug. The following problem occurs in unicode debug config: A socket connection handler class CMclSocket has a derived class CHttpProtoFile. A function Send() of the base class is called in the derived class in the OnConnect handler. Untill this function is called in the derived class the member variables of the base class r acessible. Once this function is called, accessing the member variables inside this function in the base class throws '0xC0000005: Access Violation.' error while running the application.     - Help!! %n is diabled in sprintf in VS 2005 Hi, We have some code that uses %n as a conversion specifier in sprintf. That used to work fine in VC 6.0 and also in UNIX. But now, in VS 2005 that sprintf statement crashes. During the debugging I found that %n support is disabled in the source file output.c. I do need to use the dll version of the C run time library. Is there any way I can continue to link to the C run time library without any source code change? Do I have to change all my existing code to use sprintf_s which requires an additional argument?     - VC6 SP6 I have installed SP6 for VC6. This was done to deal with a problem with the ios destructor issue referred to in KB814308. After installing the service pack the file _ios.cpp was still the same that was in previous service packs (date on the file, 2000-06-13). If you refer to the individual knowledge base article it shows a file with the date of 2003-02-05. I was wondering does anyone have the hot fix that is referred to in the knowledge base article. I have asked a support person at Microsoft as we have an outstanding issue with named pipes and when he looked into finding the hotfix he said that he was unable to locate it.     - LNK 4210 comes when i migrate from VC6.0 to VC8.0 Hi, I had a DLL build using VC 6.0. I migrated the Source to VC8.0. Now I am getting the linker error "LNK4210: .CRT section exists; there may be unhandled static initializers or terminators". Please note that I have my own DLL Entry point specified in the make file for the DLL. I have checked documentation. I have tried to call _CRT_INIT function in my entry point funtion but then i get the LNK2001 unresolved external symbol CRT_INIT. Can anybody tell me the exact problem and fix for it. As far as I can figure out the constructors for global members is called by run time library. but in this case i am not able to initialize the run time library (_CRT_INIT ??)     - InterlockedCompareExchange64 under VC++ 6.0: in-line assembly using cmpxchg8b ?? I am trying to implement an atomic compare-and-exchange of a "double" type, under VC++ 6.0 for WinXP. The Windows API function of InterlockedCompareExchange64 is not available for WinXP (it's only available for Vista, see http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/en-us/dllproc/base/interlockedcompareexchange64.asp ) . There is a compiler intrinsic function of _InterlockedCompareExchange64 (see http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ttk2z1ws(VS.80).aspx ), but this intrinsic seems to be available only for more recent versions of VC++ (such as VC++ 2005), and it's not available as an intrinsic for VC++ 6.0. So, I think that I need an in-line assembly function which, like the 2005 compiler intrinsic, uses the cmpxchg8b instruction. In-line assembly, however, is beyond my capability. I found user-mode code that uses in-line assembly and the cmpxchg8b instruction at this thread in microsoft.public.win32.programmer.kernel (see the next-to-last post): http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.win32.programmer.kernel/browse_thread/thread/ecc0a35d9fcef3b5/0e3b6a23d301a62a . The code doesn't work for me. Here's what I mean by "doesn't work": I implemented the function in a singly-threaded environment, simply to test whether the function properly stores the correct double value at the destination location. As expected (since we're in a singly-threaded environment), the function's return value indicates that the current value of the destination agrees with the comparand's value, and that the exchange was successful. However, the value that actually gets stored at the destination address is bizarrely corrupted, and does not agree with the exchange value. Can anyone offer any insights (other than a suggestion to upgrade to VC++ 2005)? Maybe someone knows of the assembly code used by the current compiler's intrinsic?     - Send/Post Messages on Vista Hi all, There're two apps, A and B on Vista. Using FindWindow() with caption of a window, it proves that B can find the window of A. However when B calling PostMessage() to shot down A of the window, it doesn't work. My understanding is that both A and B are in the same session since they are running under the same user login. Does this mean that both SendMessage() or PostMessage() will not work anymore even in the same session on Vista? Hello, As I read the following document a few times at: http://www.codeproject.com/system/serial.asp given to me by fellow friend Jochen in my previous post I am ready to give rs232 a crack at it! :) I am using the "Windows messages" option of rs232 interfacing (See document). In spite of me using VC++ for 9 months now, I still consider myself a beginer when it comes to much of the language and especially the VC++ GUI. Here is my first problem. I have started to code for the rs232 as indicated in the above link's web document as so: #define STRICT #include <tchar.h> #include <windows.h> #include "CSerialWnd.h" I still don't know what the "#define STRICT" statement is doing there? But I am just copying the sample. Up to now all I am used to is including windows.h and some odd header file that I created. I don't know how to include the header files of CSerialWnd library in my compiler's include path. I didn't get very far, but its a start and I don't know what to do, I tried to look at the project properties to see if there is a field that requires include paths, or something like this....     - Help on Application Desktop Toolbars Hi Recently I have wrote a program that display the AppBar on top of the screen. The Appbar window will not overlap other maximized windows, which means the windows title bar will not be blocked by the appbar window. However, when I run the appbar program within a service program (execute the exe file using CreateProcess API), the AppBar window will overlap other windows and block their titlebar.     - How to make an app elevated silently? Hi all, Regarding UAC on Vista, an app needs to run with Administrator Privileges (full, or not-full-but-higher than Standard User's). The app will be installed by an Installer. Is there a way to elevate the app silent when it's installed or it's starting running, without prompt of a dialog box?     - Monitor a directory using WaitForMultipleObjects Platform : Windows2000, XP, Microsoft Visual C++ .NET (Version 7.1), Hello, I need to process the files in a directory immediately the moment it gets deposited in a directory. I am trying to achieve this by running WaitForMultipleObjects , FindFirstChangeNotificationAPI, FindNextChangeNotification in a While loop in the Run() of one of my worker threads of my multithread application. I get the events for the files that were deposited after the WaitForMultipleObjects was invoked in the while loop. However those files that get deposited in the folder in the split of second before the WaitForMultipleObjects is invoked are not getting reported i.e. I am not getting their handles. Is there any other API or code that can help em achieve the same without losing the notification of the files deposited? Any eveident problem that you see as to why this should happen?     - Memory Management Hi everyone, I have implemented a memory manager for some SDK I'm working on (a game engine). The primary goal of this memory manager is to reduce fragmentation, to perform fast allocation of small blocks of memory, and to give more detailed information about memory leaks. This manager works fine, and without problems. Now, as you might have guessed already, my problems are the operators new and delete. I wish to overload them in a *safe* way, such that the memory manager is automatically used. I do not want to use class-based new/delete operators. It also has to work properly with other libraries, including the STL. I did overwrite the global operators, and that woks, but it just doesn't feel safe. I realize that there's a good chance, that you'll tell me, that there's just no good and safe way to do what I want.     - MS Developement Environment Toolbar Question I had someone code a piece of software for me so I bought Visual Studio .NET 2003 Pro so I could build the project should I ever have the need. I have all of the source code for the project. I open the project and click build and it goes thru fine.     - question about how threads work I am new to threading and I have the following program, but I am unsure about one thing. This program prints out 5 numbers from 0 to 4 or if I take out the Sleep(1000) in IFK_ThreadedRead, it prints out 0 to 405. What I don't really understand is why if I increase the Sleep(5000) statement in the test_interfaceKit function just after the thread is called, it will print out more numbers. I would have thought that the function the thread calls would print out 0 to 999, end the thread and then wait for 5 seconds. It acts like the thread is constantly being called. I am a bit confused about this and I thought I would ask someone who knows a bit more how threads work. Hopefully, you can clear this up for me.     - Project dependencies I have a VS 2005 C++ solution that has 3 projects. One builds a DLL, the next a static version of the same library, and finally a test program that uses the DLL. The build order shows the DLL first, then the static, then the test program (which is the startup project). If I do a rebuild solution (which is successful) and then do F5 to run, it always tells me that the DLL is out of date and rebuilds it before running. The platforms to be supported are Win XP and 2K. How do I detect these beeps?
