    - Some Source Code for a Directory/File Lister? Well, I need to change thousands of files for my company in all kinds of ways. I need a piece of code in Visual C++ that allows me to (a) list the files/subdirectories of a directory, (b) highlight some of them, and then (c) perform various string operations to their contents.     - Uniquely identifying a thread *over time* Hi, The context: I have an application in which an object X makes a COM connection to some object. Different threads within the application all call methods on the one single object X that subsequently calls methods on the COM connection. For this a marshall stream is needed, as COM pointers are not thread safe. This marshalling requires some interthread communication which takes time. So I don't want to do that on every method call, but just once for each thread and then store the marshalled pointer mapped to that particular thread (sort of CMap<thread identifier, marshalled COM pointer>). Threads here "don't know" that they are at some point invoking COM communication, so I can't have them store the pointer. Also threads can be terminated and created on user request throughout the lifetime of the application. The question: how do I uniquely identify a thread. And the answer is NOT: thread handle or thread id. These are unique at a certain point in time. They are not over time! (Correct me if I'm wrong, but that's what extensive Googling learned ;-p) (I'm also happy with a different approach altogether. But then just for the pointer problem. I'm not planning on limiting all COM communication to the main thread and have the other threads send/post messages around, as many of you would suggest.)     - Web Cam Sample Hi. Does anyone know if there's a way to get a Web Cam to draw into a hidden buffer ? I am familiar with the APIs that start with "cap" like capCreateCaptureWindow() that are in "vfw32.lib". But those APIs require a visible Window in order to do anything. I dont want a window because i need to modify the pixels of the frames BEFORE they are shown. I looked at the "DirectShow Samples" , specificaly the sample : "VidCap" but it doesnt specify if its meant to be used as viewer for a WebCam or not.     - #import [out,retval] ? Hello, I wrote an ATL in-proc server for use with VBA and MFC. In the MFC code, I am using #import on the server's type library. MFC complains about interface methods with an [out,retval] parameter. I can add a second copy of the method to the interface with a new name and the [out,retval] changed to just [out].     - can't define entry points in DLL Hi, I am writing a managed c++ library under .net. It has one class, brilliantly named Class1 which has one function FtoC. When I put the following line in the .def file EXPORTS ftoc=Class1::FtoC the linker gives the error unresolved external symbol Class1::FtoC What am I doing wrong? Also, I am doing this because I need to know the name of the function inside the dll to call it from lisp. Instead of a .def file, I tried using dumpbin on the dll file, but it didnt show any of the functions.     - Self-Restart Executable Hi, Is there a way to self-restart an executable? I have the code for self deleting an executable, where the executable deletes itself at the end of assigned task; but I am not to make it work for self-restart.     - Modaless dialog + crystal report viewer control when i add a crystal report 9.0 viewer control (Active X control) into the dialog. And then use "CreateIndierect()" to create the modeless dialog. The viewer cannot dislplay successfully. The screen only display the blank dialog.     - mfc wrapper not passing quit message Probably a weird and meaningless topic header :) Here's what I have: my application makes it own windows using win32api and such so I don't need MFC for that. But I do use MFC for a few things (eg easy wizard dialogs). So I cheated and did it the following way (which I assume is the normal way for this) BOOL CMyApp::InitInstance() { //make my windows while (GetMessage(&msg, NULL, 0, 0) > 0) { TranslateMessage(&msg); DispatchMessage(&msg); } //clean up code return FALSE; } Therefore I get MFC functionally without having to use MFC everywhere (I dislike MFC) Ok, now my problem. When windows shutdown I don't receive any notification, ie the clean up code doesn't get executed above. Any ideas on how I can catch the shutdown and therefore do some needed clean up code.     - Missing Win32 API function In the MSDN documentation supplied with VC++ 6.0 it mentions a function called SetFilePointerEx. If I try to use it the compiler says it's undefined. I've searched in all the header files and can't find it. Is this an MSDN error or is there something else going on here? My question is why these errors occured? In a C program, argc and argv is defined in the main function like int main(int argc, char *argv[]){}. However, I can not find where __argc and __argv are defined. If I compiled in Release mode, it compiles successfully without such error. Any of your help is greatly appreciated. The error comes on the last line of the function (strdup). I have checked the variables and everything seems fine.     - threads & critical sections I understand what a critical section is supposed to do, however I was wondering if someone could elaborate: Say we develop a list class (typical doubly-linked list) and as a member we def a flag of type bool. When the Add, Insert, or Remove functions of that list are called, they wait for the flag to turn off: list::add (T* value) { while (listlocked); // wait if set listlocked=true; [Add my node] listlocked=false; } I'm sure because I'm just now introducing myself to threading, I'm missing a big chunk of the issue that is perhaps masquerading in the unknown caves of Windows- but is this essentially what is going on? "The instruction ********** referenced memory at "***********". The memory could not be read. Click OK to terminate the program. Click on CANCEL to debug the program. But when I test the same on other machines I am unable replicate . As it is production server I am unable to Debug in that system. Both systems have same configurations (windows XP professional, 2002 version, service pack1) Can someone let me know what are all the general circumstances which can lead to this type of errors from application point of view and O/S point of view.     - Memory mapped files Hi there, I've been looking at the MapViewOfFileEx() api to access a persistent large database. Specifically I need to stream parts of a large terrain database for visualisation. The data size is intially limited to a few hundred mb but may grow to be many gbs. Using the mapviewoffilex i can set a fixed address for my file create it then reload it at the same address and all my pointers etc into it are still valid. I cannot seem to find in the docs though any idea of how to choose an address the base address. Experimental figures work fine but if it broke in the field after a few revisions of windows it would be a nightmare. Is there a good way to pick the base address? Or am i going about this all wrong?     - How to know ENTER is hit in Win32 Edit Ctrl I'm using a Win32 edit ctrl (not MFC and not in a dialog). I have a parent window that creates and uses the edit ctrl as a child window. Everything works well except that the escape and enter keys produce a beep and don't actually end the edit sequence. How do know when the user has hit escape or enter or tab in the edit box (surely this is a way without subclassing the edit box window) so I can complete the edit sequence (get text, change focus etc.)? I think the subject says it all, but here's the long version: I have a droplist combo box whose string contents describe the members of an enumerated data type. I used ClassWizard to create an int variable associated with it and that works, but requires type-casts to and from the associated program data item. I accidentally (really! I have no idea how this happened, it just popped up one morning about a week after I designed the dialog) used an enumerated type variable instead, e.g. ... eMyType m_eTypeIndex; and within DoDataExchange() there's the associated DDX call DDX( ... (int*)&m_eTypeIndex );. // this is from memory, it may not be exact but a C-type cast was there and ClassWizard choked on this, complaining that it needs to see a "constant or variable reference" where the lexical token starts with the cast. Restoring the dialog member variable to ... int m_eTypeIndex; and inserting the casts where needed in the dialog unitization and termination sections made ClassWizard healthy again. BUT the code with the cast compiled and worked perfectly! (I guess because it's right.) It would be slightly more desirable to have the member data item be the enumerated type rather than the generic int but certainly not at the expense of being able to use ClassWizard.     - INPUT stucture undefined error in VC++ Hi, I have a situation where I need to send keyboard input to the system. I intend to use SendInput function. To use this function I need to use the INPUT structure as a parameter to this function. This structure is defined in Winuser.h, which I have included in my source. I have declared a variable of the type INPUT in my program. When I compile the program I get an error saying 'INPUT' stucture is not declared. I am using VC++ 6.0 on Win 2000 machine. But the values that come in rcEdit are different from what i give as the x coordinate and y coordinate in the CreateWindow function. Also there is something i am confused about when i create a separte application for this dialog box the values that come in rc(dialogs Rect) are the rc.top=0;rc.left=0;rc.bottom=116;rc.right=78 Also in this case CreateWindow and its corresponding GetWindowRect has the same upperleft corner but when i open this dialog using DoModal() from another application than the different values come like: r.top=104;rc.left=62;rc.bottom=116;rc.right=78 and now the values that i send to createWindow are diff from its GetWindowRect(g_hwndEdit,&rcEdit) I really need to find out the coordinates of the edit box i draw dynamically as i have to draw lines from these edit boxes to other edit boxes dynamically (think of edit box as nodes and i need to connect these nodes using lines) Can anyone Help!!     - SNMP on Windows 2003 I posted this in the networking group and found no responses. Hence posting it here just in case there is anyone who has made similar observation. == Hi Folks, I have strange problem with SNMP Mgr calls, could you please confirm if you have seen this. I am not sure if its a bug from my side or API's side. I have a SNMP manager doing tons of SNMP request calls every so often to few remote agents. I have a few thread doing all this and I make sure that a thread that opens snmp handle uses it and closes it. I see to that no thread uses snmp handle opened by another thread. What I see is, on Windows 2000 it is quite OK and works fine. But on Windows 2003, after a while, all my open snmp open calls are failing. When I call GetLastError(), strangely, it returns NoError and message "Operation completed successfully".
