    - winsock2.h and inclusion order I get a weird problem when I include winsock2.h before my own util.h, which defines some general (templated) utility functions in it's own namespace. The compiler (embedded visual C++) gives me a few syntax errors on my util.h file when I include winsock2.h first. However, when I include them in the other order (so first util.h, then winsock.h), everything is fine. I am most puzzled. Is there some issue with winsock2.h? Actually, it behaves the same way with winsock.h. I can hardly believe there's a quirk in a header as often used as winsock, but the error can't really be in my own code, since it's really simple, clear code, which works fine in other circumstances. If "i" is declared into the "for", how is possible to use it later? The code compile right, so Was I wrong thinking that "i" _is_declared_ into the "for"? Then, talking with the partners at work someone pointed out that in VS you can do it, but in C++Builder it wouldn't compile. The question is What is the standard?     - Operator Overloading I know that you can overload objects, but can the standard data types (integers, short, long, floats, etc.) have their = operator overloaded? I am developing a client server data application in C++ and I don't want to poll to see if the data has changed. I was thinking that overlaoding the = operator would indicate when there has been a change. Ofcourse I could make my own classes, but I have tens of thousands of lines of code that use the standard data types. Bascially, I just want to know what data has been changed and update it to the server without changing my exisitng code if possible. Is it possible to have an event triggered when a variable is changed? Overloading the = operator would be the same idea. Just wondering if there is something in MFC or the C++ language that would tell me when the value of a variable changes. The catch is that it has to be efficent too since my app has 750,000 variables. Are there any low level hooks into the OS that would help? I know its asking a lot, but does anyone have any ideas?     - Static library problem Hi, I have a problem with static libraries in Visual Studio 2003. My problem is the following: I have project 'BaseFramework' which is a static library(.lib) project, this project uses some C functions from a vendor. I also have a project B which is an application(.exe) project, this project includes the a.lib file.     - using PRINTDLGEX API call to select a printer I'm new to API calls & using Visual C++, I have tried using this code (see below) from the MSDN website, but get compile errors right at the first line: : error C2065: 'LPPRINTDLGEX' : undeclared identifier : error C2146: syntax error : missing ';' before identifier 'pPDX' : error C2065: 'pPDX' : undeclared identifier we are using VFP 6.0 and using the older PrintDLG API call but are getting an intermittent problem (which is happening more & more as more of our users are using Window XP) where selecting a printer doesn't work. With Win9X we just used to run in a loop in VFP to get the user to select the printer again and it would normally be OK. I'm trying to use 'PPRINTDLGEX' instead to see if this solves the problem.     - LoadLibrary("rsaenh.dll") succeeds in Debugger, fails otherwise (Win I call LoadLibrary("rsaenh.dll") from a huge MFC MDI application (which is done implicitly by CryptAcquireContext(), my actual target API call :)). On Windows 2003 Server it fails, GetLastError() yields 0x000003E6 == 998 == ERROR_NOACCESS ("Invalid access to memory location") which probably means an access violation during dll startup. But if I connect a remote debugger (msvcmon -anyuser -tcpip) just before the LoadLibrary() call, it succeeds. Also on WinXP and Win2000 Server the call succeeds (even without debugger). Calling LoadLibraryEx() with DONT_RESOLVE_DLL_REFERENCES succeeds also on Win2003 Server, but a subsequent CryptAcquireContext() fails, supposedly because the library is not fully loaded. I obtained a hot fix from Microsoft support which seems to fit my problem (see http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;899750&sd=rss&spid=3198), but unfortunately it didn't help.     - Should I use stsic class for DBAccess ? Hi I'm creating a small IS and I'm wondering if is a good idea to create one static class which will hold methods that will access the database.     - catching messages for control in dialog I am creating a dialog without MFC and have run into yet another problem. When I make my call to DialogBoxParam() to create and show the dialog, I supply it with a function that will handle the messages from the dialog. This has been working fine and things are coming along, until... I wanted to catch mouse messages for my list view that is in the dialog. If I click anywhere else in the dialog, I can catch the button down message, but if I click in the list view area, the message is not sent to the function. Where is it sent?     - explicit member template function specialization Hi, I have a problem with a template function inside a class (no template). The template parameter of the class is a policy class. But the explicit specialization of the template function does not work. Visual C++ 7.1 compiler said that the function cannot be explicitly specialized. But the same code compiles with the Comeau online compiler successfully.     - to load a user's profile without logging in Hi everyone, Could anyone help me with the problem while unistallation. I want to delete entries from HKCU(HKUsers) corresponding to each and every user's account present on my local computer. Right now i am not able to load the ussers profile as i am using LoadUserProfile. The problem which i feel is that this function requires the token to a loggedon user(using LogonUser) , but i just want to load the profile without asking for the password.     - Property sheet behaviour OnApply In a tabbed dialogue, I make changes on various PropertySheets and press Apply. The standard recommendation at this stage seems to be to send the PropertySheet a PSM_CANCELTOCLOSE message, which (despite its name) disables the cancel button and turns the OK button into Close. This seems crazy. For if I now make any more changes in the PropertySheets, there is no going back. The "Close" button accepts them and the "Cancel" button is no longer available. A far more sensible behaviour (which is sort of suggested by the name of the message) would be to change the "Cancel" button into "Close" and leave the "OK" alone. Question: *is* this more sensible or am I missing something. Of course I can implement this behaviour with SetWindowText() on the Cancel button, but as there is no message to do it automatically, I am in danger of getting the English text "Close" on the button no matter what the language of the user.     - malloc() & page boundaries -- Difference between VC6 and VC7 CRT? I was wondering if anyone knew of any changes in the CRT that would cause malloc behavior to change between code built with VC6/VC7? We discovered a segfault bug in production code built with VC6 that was not crashing frequently at all. We fixed the bug, but in the meantime, our builds were in the process of being switched to VC7. In the VC7 built code, the same crash occurs much more frequently. This alarmed us, so we are investigating why VC7 behavior would differ so much from VC6. The nature of the bug is such that many small buffers (~16 bytes) are being malloc'd but the bug causes the code to read past the end of the buffer by 8 bytes. Straightforward, and this crashes whenever the address to the 17th byte lives on the next memory page which happens to not be allocated. The issue is in VC6 built code, this bug rarely occurs, almost as if the memory allocation never allocates that close to an invalid page, or never completely fills up an entire page. When the code is built in VC7, the crash occurs very, very frequently, as if the 16 bytes are being allocated at the end of the page prior to an invalid one. My question is if anything regarding malloc or the heap changed between VC6/VC7 that could be behind this. Do any of the compiler optimization flags affect malloc's ability to alloc up to the last available byte in a page? We have discovered the source of the bug in remote code and have fixed it, but we are questioning if it is safe to move to VC7 so quickly. So, what I want to do after inserting values into Library is sort it alphabetically by Library.bookname. How can I use the Visual C++ qsort built in to accomplish that.     - Question on Crypto API Hi, Using the Crypto API, we wrote a progam to store our company generated certificates and associated private and public key pair under the store location CERT_SYSTEM_STORE_CURRENT_USER and under the store name MY. When we access the SSL sites via IE, we noticed that our comapny certificates shows up on the Client authentication dialog box.     - systematic debugging of random freeze in debug mode My code contains a loop that has to perform calculations on data streamed from a circular buffer. The calculation has to be performed 50,000+ times (about 30 ms per cycle) spitting out a number after each cycle. The thing freezes in a poissonic manner (i.e. sometimes after 10 seconds of data aquizition, sometimes after 10 min of data aquizition, etc). I do have the debugger attached. The program just stops responding and I only can terminate it by "Debug->Stop debugging". There are no indiciations in the Debug output window which would warn me of the onset of the freeze. Since the freeze happens randomly, and I don't see any feedback in the debugger, I am puzzled how I can systematically debug this thing. Can anyone give a spepific advice on where I could start?     - Preparing for 64 bit windows I'd like to canvass opinions on style. I am preparing assorted DLLs for 64 bit windows by switching on the flag which puts out warnings about type mismatches etc. Of course I am getting lots of them. Mostly from just a few sources - schematically: int n = strlen(....); int n = ptr1 - ptr2; int n = vector.size(); Now most of the arrays I am dealing with are highly unlikely to be bigger than 128 elements, and bigger than 2^31 elements is inconceivable. [Instructions on music like "Andante", "Allegro", just do not run to tens of thousands of characters each!] But I like my code to compile without warnings. So I have a choice of two ways to go: 1. Use the "proper" types. size_t n = strlen(); INT_PTR n = ptr1 - ptr2; etc. This populates my code with variables of type "size_t", "INT_PTR", "UINT_PTR" and so forth and so on. What was a simple bit of integer arithmetic starts to look very ugly on the page, and is far less readable. 2. Put in explicit casts int n = (int)strlen(....); int n = int(ptr1 - ptr2); etc. Now I don't like all sorts of unnecessary casts around either (even though I am happy in general that avoiding compiler warnings when "downsizing an integer type" is a perfectly good reason for them). Either way the code starts to look a lot messier. Any views on which is better? Alternatives?     - Refresh the system tray I have created an application to end a specific program at a specific time each day. The application I am ending is not mine and I cannot modify it. When it starts, it is minimized to the system tray. When my application ends it, the icon is still in the system tray until the mouse pointer is pointed on the system tray. I have tried to investigate the Shell_NotifyIcon function, but since the application is not mine, I do not know the taskbar ID of the application. This seems to be a required piece of information for the function. Is there any other way to do a general refresh of the system tray (similar to what happens when the mouse pointer is on the system tray) programatically? Any help is appreciated. Whenever we change anything in A.dll's objects, everything that links against its import lib A.lib gets rebuilt. This takes ages, and it seems very inefficient. Obviously, when changing any exported signature / symbol in any of A.dll's objects (read: a header change), we'll have to rebuild everything that depends on A.dll. But what if we only change the source? Is there a smarter way to decide when re-building the dependent dlls is necessary, than just the time stamp of A.lib?     - Weird First-chance exceptions and ODBC Hi all, I'm getting some very weird first-chance exceptions when I use the ODBC functions in my C program. It goes like this. void a(...) { // do some ODBC stuff: connect, run some queries, disconnect b(...) } The problem occurs when I call b. Immediately as its called, in the disassembly window the instruction is a push ebp, a first-chance exception is generated (of type 0xC0000005) saying that an instruction was failing to read address 0xfffffff4. As well an assertion is generated saying _CrtIsValidHeapPointer was invalid. Since i'm only calling a function and only a push ebp was performed how the heck does the program a. generate an exception and b. call _CrtIsValidHeapPointer ??? These types of things seem to occur exclusively to me when we try and use the ODBC functions. If we take those out these exceptions are not generated.     - Enumerating SQL Server database tables rows and sprocs using MFC Hi, I've been looking around for a while now after an efficient way to enumerate tables, rows and sprocs of a MsSQL database. The best I could come up with was SQL DMO, but one cannot have it installed without installing SQL Server itself or MSDE, so I'm looking for alternative. After a table name was fetched, I will need to know the rows it contains, what type they are, and what are the indexes and identity defined for this table. Effectively, if I could somehow get the CREATE SQL statement from the DB itself that would be ideal. Also, I will need a way to get the sprocs code from the DB, and all that without having any prequisites on either sides - client and server. I'm using VC++ with MFC. Ensure the following

In InitInstance of the DLL App class
Have AfxEnableControlContainer() as the first line;

In your calling applications view invoke the DLL as
CoInitializeEx(NULL, COINIT_MULTITHREADED);

I had it working but any ideas of why it is working ? Experts please
help !
