    - replacing sprintf_s in macro for compiler compatibility Hello, I will have to build my application with a different compiler at some point. The secure functions like sprintf_s are a nice feature of the visual c++ compiler. But they will probably not be supported on the target platform. If I had the possibility to #define a macro which uses sprintf_s if the visual c++ compiler is used and uses the standard sprintf if a different compiler is used I would not have to switch off the deprecated warnings.     - Prologue/Epilogue for SEH I wonder if anyone here might know a bit more about structured exception handling (SEH) with VC++ than the Microsoft documentation provides. When the SEH function prologue is: push regs allocate stack space the required epilogue form is: add rsp, stack_space_amount pop regs ret or a similar form using LEA. The documentation implies that when the prologue is: push regs the epilogue has to be: add rsp, 0 pop regs ret Is this zero addition to rsp needed here?     - Distributing msvcrt.dll Hello. I have developed an app on Windows 2000 with Vc++ 6 (service pack 5). The app needs msvcrt.dll, which on my development machine is "6.1.9844.0". (If Im not mistaken windows 95 is the only version of windows which doesnt ship with msvcrt.dll in the system32 folder..can anybody confirm this?) Im not sure whats the best strategy for (not) distributing msvcrt.dll. Should I always install the msvcrt.dll from my devlopment machine into my apps folder on the user's machine? Should I only do it if the user has an older (or no) version in his system32 folder (or %PATH%). Or should I distribute the newest version of the dll (presumably that which ships with vista or xp)? If I do copy msvcrt.dll into my apps folder, will that version always be used by my app? On Windows Xp/Vista my app crashes unexpectedly if I put the msvcrt.dll into the same folder as my app's exe. Everything seems fine if I dont (so that my app instead uses the version from windows' system32 dir). Are such crashes to be expected, if is using the msvcrt.dll from win 2000 machine? And are newer versions always better, or are the versions which ship from microsoft with each os the most appropriate (in whihc case what to do with win 95)? Thanks very much in Advance.     - Array of char pointers. If I had to say what "arr" is, I would say it is an array of pointers to chars. If so why is it intialized with strings instead of addresses? char *arr[] = { "a", "b", "c","dd", "eee" }; Also when looking at the values of the pointers (when they appear to be adjacent) they seem to decrease by at least 8 bytes ( two native size words?) even when the strings are a single character, which should be two bytes. So I am guessing they are on a stack if the addresses decrease but why 8 bytes each? Is it some type of linked list? Hello, In the following code conversion from class A object to class B object can be done in two ways: (1) by conversion function being member of class A (line 6); (2) by conversion constructor being member of class B (line 11). However conversion constructor is called. The sole way to make A::operator B() to be called is removing ,,const'' qualifiers (at lines 11 & 25). This causes that the only implicit conversion sequence goes throughout conversion function (declared at line 6). Why? It seems that according to 13.3 of ISO 14882 none of the sequences is better then other. Thus ambiguity should occur causing error.     - c++ event sink I have a function that will download XML from internet and load XML data into database. The function will take 5 - 20 minutes to finish. I heard I should use event sink (event listener) when function is finished the task, then it will notify the caller.     - Moving projects to the newer version of VC++ I have inherited a lot of projects using VC++ 6, 2002, 2003 and 2005, most of them MFC based (hence cross-posting in 2 newsgroups). I intend to move all of them to 2008 over the time. I already moved some and did have to make some code changes, mostly due to the fact that newer compiler is more strict in conformance to C++ standard. The applications are producing the same result as far as I can see but I haven't performed any extensive testing. What concerns me is that changes in compiler and/or libraries can produce different executable with different behavior, and that difference may not be immediately obvious, however it will break our applications. Can those of you who had to move a lot of projects from one version of VC++ to another share your experiences? How much of a problem it has been? Hello everyone,
Our customer experience an access violation error inside the method
GetRecordInfoFromTypeInfo (implemented in oleaut32.dll).
It doesn't happen every time, but it happens every couple of days.
The environment is Windows Server 2003 SP2 32 bits.
The version of the oleaut32.dll is 5.2.3790.4202

Has anyone ever encountered this?
We can supply a mindump for investigation.
