    - bug: std::max Hello, Okay, since I am only experimenting with Visual C++ I should not be extremely strict, but what I found will surprise many. I was _very_ surprised. In case this bug is known (I couldn't find it reported, though), ignore my report. In case you find the code being in error - it is supposed to be 100% Standard C++ - tell me and I'll take a break from C++. I am using Visual C++ 2005 Express Edition. First of all, here the code: #include <iostream> #include <ostream> #include <utility> int main() { typedef unsigned long bug_type; bug_type a = 2; bug_type b = 34; bug_type c = 534; bug_type d = std::max(std::max(a, b), c); std::cout << "max value: " << d << "\n"; } Create a new Win32 console project. I created mine without precompiled headers and empty, but I don't think it matters (haven't tried it though). Do not modify any project properties. Add the code to the project, compile in Debug and Release mode. Output is as expected. Now set "project properties -> Configuration Properties -> C++ -> Language -> Disable Language Extensions" to true. Compile again in Debug and Release mode, also pay attention to warning issued. Now run both programs, and take a look at the output in debug mode and release mode. Now some properties of the bug: 1) It does not happen if some other type (e.g. int, long) is used as bug_type. 2) It does not happen if there is only one std::max, e.g. the following line: bug_type d = std::max(a, b); does not cause symptorms 3) It does not appear when language extensions are disabled (default) 4) It only appears in debug mode. I find this really cool. Cool because such a simply bug, cool because it took ages to track it down, cool because it vanishes in release mode. If someone knows a prize for me, I will happily take one :-) I will report it to the Microsoft page if people here agree that: a) it is a bug, not my code being wrong b) it is not reported c) it can be reproduced on other machines I wait with reporting because it looks so strange I believe I am dreaming.     - Extra Character when doing File::WriteLine When the following code is writes to the file I get an extra character... outSW->WriteLine(S"BTC Networking\xAE"); I'm wanting to put the "registered trademark" symbol (\xAE) on the end of the line.     - help on using <list> <vector> in a simple VC program I'm using VC++ .Net to do a simlple program. I tried to use <vector>, <list> in the program, and I simply put the folowing lines " #include <list> #include <vector> #include <string> using namespace std; ..... vector <int> list; " in the head part of my file "simple.h". But it gives compilation error when I try to compile it in "Debug" mode, but it's ok in the "Release" mode. I tries several ways to solve it, but I always got compilation error related to files: "xdebug", "xmemory"... Does someone know what I should do to make it working in "Debug" mode? I've searched extensively for memory leaks, shared pointers that aren't released, and the like, and have found nothing.     - Passing a structure vs passing a pointer? I have a lot of functions that I wrote where I pass a structure RECT. I am wondering if it would be more efficient executable code if I passed a pointer to the RECT instead. The difference in the functions is that I would need to recode my RECT elements to use the "->" instead of the "." - I don't want to do that unless it would save runtime efficienty.     - Excel automation problem - dialog becomes visible hello, I have a problem in my MFC class library (VS2003) w.r.t excel automation. I open an excel file to grab some data and close it. When the user clicks the button to open another excel file, the file that I previously used is show in an excel window that opens... (i NEVER want excel to be visible) My interface to the excel automation is implimented through a singleton object. I think that the focus of excel (even though the visible property is FALSE) is being propagated to the top when focus is lost on my app (focus going to the open dialog).     - Hooking the keyboard from IE Hi all, I have developed a BHO that installs low level keybaord hooks and CBT hooks globally whenever IE is opened.The keys that are pressed when IE is active are to be captured.I am trying to check whether the IE is active first, If it is i set a boolean flag.In the key hook proc ,if the flag is set, the keys are sent for further processing.The keyboard hooks is working fine(when checked separately), but the CBT hooks is not working properly. The IE page is taking a long time to load and after it loads, its not informing me abt whether the IE is active. The only code returns is the Window creations.Nothing else is happening.     - CString memory allication question Hello there, I have a question on CStrings (the MFC class). When created from a character array, does the CString class free the memory of the array from which it was created automatically or does the caller have to to this? And if the later, can it be safely be done immediately after the construction of the CString? Here is an example. The question would be whether this code causes a memory leak or not.     - LNK2005 when using using overloaded malloc/free (dlmalloc) Hi, I want to use dlmalloc in VC C++ Projekt. dlmalloc (http://g.oswego.edu/dl/html/malloc.html) is a memory pool which performs (in my case) better than using the normal heap management. The files from dlmalloc are one *.c and one *.h file. I tried simply to add these files to my projekt. I then get LNK2005 error (multiple defined symbols) in the Debug Version. It compiles and links fine in the Release Version. But in the Release I get an exception in msize.c when the runtime initializes. I also tried to put dlmalloc into an extra static lib projekt, with the same results. I have tried to get this work for days now and I am not getting any further. With gcc and g++ I can just compile dlmalloc and link it into my application. But with Visual Studio I keep getting the mentioned behaviour.     - strcpy_s and friends Having at last upgraded to VC++2005, I am getting the usual myriad of errors and warnings one normally gets when porting a project to a new compiuler. I notice it *really* *really* wants me to use strcpy_s() etc instead of strcpy() etc. Out of curioity: I was under the impression that strcpy() was written into the tablets of stone which define the standard C-runtime library. Does strcpy_s() have a similar status or is it just a good wheeze by Microsoft to prevent them getting millions of complaints occasioned by buffer oveflows? Hi, I am using Microsoft Visual C++ Express Edition and have observed a nasty crash happening with the "strftime" function when you pass a format string that is not recognized by it. I could make SafeCall function as template and overload it for 0-N parameters. However, it will be ugly and unmaintainable. I could make small template for method call only: template < typename T, typename Result, typename P1, ..., typename PN> struct Call { Result operator()( T* This, Result (T::*Pm)(P1), P1 p1) { return (This->*Pm)(p1); } ... // all overloads from P1 to P1 - PN }; But I don't know how to embed it inside X::SafeCall without changing SafeCall signature for each overload. Currently I have quite unpleasant macro to solve this. I want to get rid of it. Unfortunately, I can't use boost::tuple/std::tr1::tuple. Is there any feasible solution for my problem? I basically used the VC6 project file and opened it in VC.NET then resave it However, the program requires UNICODE which just failed the compilation.     - Slow OS response with growing project I am using Visual C++ .NET Version 7.1.3088 to construct a Solution containing multiple projects. I run on a Dell PC using XP but the source files are on a server running OS Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1. Over the past several months, I have gradually been adding source files to the projects. Right now I have a total of 113 source files being built in. What has happened is that somewhere along the line as my project has been growing, some aspect of it is affecting the way the OS is behaving. An example: If I simply start up Visual C++ .NET for this project (ie not building or editting or anything else), and I go to some other folder on the Server using Explorer and copy a small file (about 2 KB in size, using CTRL C, CTRL V) it is now taking about 35 seconds to do the copy! And this file has nothing to do with my project. It does not look like a very slow steady copy, it looks like something is blocking the command and then finally it does the copy. In this dead time, no controls in Visual C++ .NET respond to inputs either. If I shut down Visual C++ .NET, things are back to normal. If I load a "smaller" project, the problem does not come up. I am not sure how to quantify "smaller"; I tried deleting files out of my project to see if I could find an "edge". If I deleted enough out, the behavior went away, but I was not able to narrow it down to a specific number of files (or a specific file.) The phenomenum occurs for other users using other desktop PCs and the same server. It appears that it may not happen for other servers. Also if I operate entirely on a desktop PC, there is no problem.     - VC2005 and boost::shared_ptr Hello group, There seems to be a bug int the interop layer in VC2005 when dealing with certain pointer types (or values?) Here is a repro case using Boost version 1.32 and C++/CLI : using namespace System; #pragma unmanaged #include <boost/shared_ptr.hpp> boost::shared_ptr<int> ReturnAPointer() { return boost::shared_ptr<int>(); } #pragma managed int main(array<System::String ^> ^args) { boost::shared_ptr<int> ptr=ReturnAPointer(); if (ptr) { System::Console::WriteLine("integer : "+ (*ptr)); } } ReturnAPointer clearly returns a NULL smart pointer (px==0). The boolean operator for shared_ptr is : typedef T * this_type::*unspecified_bool_type; operator unspecified_bool_type() const // never throws { return px == 0? 0: &this_type::px; } Clearly, this operator should return an int** equal to 0, and indeed it does so in the native layer. However, back in managed code, the return value of boolean operator - as shown by Visual 2005 - is 0xffffffff. Therefore, the WriteLine function is called, which, of course causes an assertion in shared_ptr::operator*. The obvious workaround is to replace the test by : if (ptr.get()!=NULL) But it kind-of defeats the whole purpose of shared_ptr' boolean operator, and it may be difficult to find those cases in existing code. Before I report this to MS feedback, can anyone confirm the behaviour? Any idea on a solution? If with DSP you mean Digital Signal Processor, the best thing would be to
contact the local representative of your chip vendor.

I programmed Texas Instruments DSPs some time ago, and it is very easy to
get them to give you a set of reference manuals if they think your company
will move a lot of chips.
And if they don't think so, you can still get pdf version of all of their
reference manuals.

my experienc with DSP vendors is that they are very helpfull because their
goal is to make it as easy as possible for you to use their chips.
