They all seem to have little catch-22's that make me hesitant to fill in the empty "else" clause below.     - Adjusting printing settings in MFC Greetings! I have an application where a vector font is printed. There are a few parameters (line width and colour, # of rows and columns) that can be adjusted for printing. What I wonder is how I would best integrate it into the printing framework of an MFC SDI application. In particular, I wonder about the following things: - There is a print setup dialog, but that seems to only be a printer setup dialog - is there a way I can add controls to influence the generated layout? - Also, using the print preview, is there a way to either start the print setup dialog or a custom setup dialog so that you can quicker see the effects of your changes? - Lastly, though not that important, why are there only three zoom levels in the preview?     - Icon in a child window! Hello everyone, This question requires you to know "Checker3" program from Petzold's book. All help is appreciated! I started chapter 9 (Child Window controls) of Petzold's book and as I started reading this chapter, it started to reference stuff we did in chapter 7, more particularly the "Checker3" program. So I immediately, stopped what I was reading and went back to review "Checker3" so I would be up to speed with the particularities of this sample program. All is OKAY... But you know silly me ! I always have to dig further than I have to. For the ones that are familliar with this example!!!! I am curious to know, what if we wanted to have a title bar and an icon in every one of the 25 child windows of the checker board. So first of all I tried to add the following line just before we would register the second wndClass window: wndclass.style = CS_HREDRAW |CS_VREDRAW; But then I thought to myself, this doesn't make sence, since this only allows re-drawing when vertical or horizontal resizes are done. So I commented out that line. Then I changed the following line just before we would register the second wndClass window from : wndclass.hIcon = NULL; to wndclass.hIcon = LoadIcon (NULL, IDI_APPLICATION); But that didn't help either. It clearly states on P.301 of Charles Petzold's book where he talks about the 4 fields that are required in the wndClass structure for registering the Checker3_Child class. The field in question is the hIcon field and he says: "The hIcon field is set to NULL because child windows such as the ones in Checker3 do not required Icons" However, what if we would want them to require Icons, is there something to set in CreateWindow or in wndClass or is it just impossible to have Icons or title bars in child windows ? I have read up on the CreateWindow function which for the 3rd parameter (dwStyle)states: "[in] Specifies the style of the window being created. This parameter can be a combination of window styles, plus the control styles indicated in the Remarks section." I looked at the available control styles... I found they don't really apply to what I am trying to do! However I did not try to experiment with them.     - Final and Cieled and nothing in C++ Has the fact that both Java and C# are garbage collected, and C++ in not, anything to do with the fact that there is no language item to prevent a class from being inherired from? I once read that Java and C# implement this feature for preformance, but the C++ creators said it was not worse the effort.     - Iterator problem in VC8 calling clear() on a iterator causes a access violation in my app. It was compiled with VC8 and used to work in VC6. It only crashed in the debug version, release version seams to work.     - Prog. doesn't do waht its supposed to. Hi, I hate when I understand a piece of code and I know what its supposed to do, but then when I run it, there is a mysterious flaw, where to look now??????? Anyways this is the problem: I am finishing up chapter 8 of Petzold's book (Timers) and I seem to be stuck at the last program sample called "WhatClr" on page 352. I have looked it over for typo's but don't see anything wrong. I undertsand the logic but the program doesn't do what it claims. Its simply supposed to display the color of the current pixel underneath my pointer or as he says it "the pixel currently underneath the hot point of the mouse cursor." I don't know what he means by "Hot point" I guess he means the tip of my pointer? Anyhow if anyone is familliar with this code fragment, I would appreciate you taking a quick look at it.     - Why should I code in header file [Visual studio C++ 2005]? Hi, In VC++.Net 2005 visual studio, if I create a new winform drag and drop a button, then double click it to write click event code, then it auto generates the template code for the event in Form1.h file rather than Form1.cpp file. This behaviour is against standard C++ coding standards, where my header file is supposed to just have declarations. I read in other topics that this is due to C# association of single file concept with the winform. Can someone (from MS or MS experts) explain why is this done? and how can I avoid it to generate template code in header file and write my code in .cpp file?     - alt tab mystery i created a reversi game at http://www.coolgroups.com/reversigame2/ in C++. i noticed that, if i alt tab away from it in windows xp and alt tab back, the game screen is blank. however, if i do this on my win 2k system, the game screen shows up correctly. i'm using opengl and a separate thread for the graphics. any ideas why this might happen? btw, the game installs the source too. thanks.     - parameter passing between VC and VB Google is not my friend tonight. Or I am just being too impatient. Anyway can someone point me to relevant MSDN articles (or other up-to-date technical info) regarding parameter passing between C DLLs and VB programs. I haven't done that since the 16-bits days (VC1.5 & VB3). I hope to be able to use my old, trusty VC6, and the client would be VB.net. Not VB6, does that make a difference? I suppose I am really asking if VB.net is allowed to call unmanaged code. I seem to recall some special header was needed in order to be able to access (and return) VB strings from C. Has accessing non-Unicode C-style (zero-terminated) strings gotten any easier from the VB side, these last 10 years or so :-) Thanks in advance for pointers and hints, Bernard. The program is C++ and getting LNK2019 error when trying to link in C functions from a DLL. I'm using eVc++4.0.     - VS2005 is blocking when compiling two projects simultaneously VS2005 has the possibility to start several project builds in parallel. I found it nice, because I have a dual core. But I found, that there might be problems with this feature: The two build processes might block, if they work on the same file. (or perhaps on files in the same directory) The build process can be stopped without problems but the build can't be restarted corrrectly. Temporarily I switched back to compile only one project at a time, but I would prefer this feature to work correctly. Is it already a known bug, is there a Service Pack with fix? P.S. Reading and writing is done on block of the sectors, i.e, 100 * 1024. I am creating a image file of the read sector, and using this image file I am restoring back the contents of the disk or drive. There is no problem in reading and writing of data till 6GB it is working fine with no loss of data. Beyong 6Gb, I am able to create the image, but after writing the data i am unable see the contents. No files can be seen, but the size is reflected. But after that whats actually happening, not able to track it. Program is written in VC++.Net on Windows XP.     - Moving and copying files I'm working on a utility program to move files from one directory to another at a controlled rate and under controlled circumstances. My logic is such that if MoveFile returns an error (from/to different media) it defers to CopyFile with deletion of the original file. The problem is I can't test the logic because I can't get MoveFile to fail. Even if I'm trying to move a file from my hard drive to the network it won't fail. In general that's good but I can't guarantee what it will behave that way in all circumstances. First, could someone explain to me what it won't fail? Does MoveFile have a built in CopyFile?     - windows.h winsock.h and winsock2.h problem Hi, When compiling some program which included a header file from a library I created I got a lot of errors saying that struct etc in winsock2.h where already defined in winsock.h. Looking through the windows.h winsock2.h and winsock.h I noticed that apparently winsock2.h should always be included before winsock.h. Doing that seemed to have solved the problem. However since windows.h is normally the first file included in stdafx.h I have to remember with every project to include winsock2.h manually before it. Am I doing something wrong and or is there a better way to do this?
