I believe it comes from hypertext reference. As far as how one pronounces
it, I've wondered the same thing. I say href all as one, like I'm exhaling
heavily while saying ref.

cdonts should be pronounced "C Dons"

I say href. I think when I'm at hypertext parties, I'll just say "hypertext
reference" to avoid embarrassment. ;]

C Dons? Interesting interpretation. For that one, I'll just say "old
technology."
