    - Win32_PingStatus on Vista (works on XP) I've nearly completed an HTA that uses the Win32_PingStatus to verify if a computer is up and running. If so it uses additional WMI to gather the computer name, logged on user and domain. Once that's is done it offers 4 options - Computer Management, Remote Assistance, Remote Desktop and connecting to c$. Very nice and almost done if it weren't for Vista. The code below (with the On Error disabled) errors at "For" with "Could not completed the operation due to error 80041001" but only when a number is enter that is smaller than 1677216 (which equates to 0.255.255.255. If the number enter is 1677216 (which equates to 1.0.0.0) then it will work properly. The problem is that it will work properly with both computer names and IP addresses and it is possible to name a computer, 45. I've tried checking the valued entered for a "." to make sure it's not an IP address and then using CStr so Vista won't treat it as number. This still doesn't work! Any ideas how to circumvent this problem?     - Domain connection detection I would like to get a consensus from the group on the best / preferred method for detecting a connection to the domain for which a computer is a member of. I am going to write a script that runs at startup for laptop users that will check for a connection to the domain and exit if present. If not present, it will sit in an endless loop watching for a connection and then perform some tasks (map drives, check password expiration, etc) upon connection. I am considering pinging a known server. I am also considering using 'Scripting.FileSystemObject's' 'FolderExists' method to check for the DFS root.     - Formatting Flash Drives via VBScript Is it possible to format a Flash drive via VBScript. My ultimate goal is to format several flash drives at the same time or syncronously through script. I do backups from several computers via USB Flash Drives on a 4 port hub.. Need to achieve the following and have been banging my head against the wall: - In the process of deploying a full-disk encryption product that requires checkdisk to run prior to installation. If any bad sectors are found, I need to run check disk again and try to fix them. Unfortunately, check disk has no logging mechanism other then Event Viewer: upon completion Event ID 1001 with source of Winlogon is logged in Application log. Inside, it will have a string that looks like this: 0 KB in bad sectors This is the string I need to search for INSIDE the Event ID 1001 and if it's not 0 KB, I need to stop installation and run another check disk on reboot.     - Best way to read registry of remote computer silently Hi, We have a screen recording application in use which upon installation puts an entry into the registry called clientid which basically contains the PC name. It then records the screen, and supervisors can later on view the recordings (Held centrally on the server) by computer name. However we have run into the situation where some PC's have been ghosted, so the clientid has been duplicated, and also the situation where some PC's do not seem to even have the client on at all. I am looking to write a vbscript to basically sort this out. I have a list of the machines to go through but am unsure how I should do this. These PC's are in use 24/7 so anything I do must be done silently... I attempted to write a vbscript to use the regread functionality, however this throws an error if the key is not present (Which is the case if the client is not installed)? Also I am not entirely sure what is the best method of actually getting the script to run, I was considering using psexec, but I believe this does not transmit credentials securely, so was wondering if I could do the following in vbscript. Loop to read the text file until eof assign the current line to strComputer connect to strComputer read registry to find key value if value exists append value onto anonymous writable document on network share else if value does not exist append NULL and strComputer onto document How exactly could I go about this?     - Large WMI notification query may cause a quota violation Hi, I am querying the Security Event log for all events, and the event log is 128MB in size. I am writing every event to a text file as it is being read from the Security event viewer. The process executes for a number of minutes until the text file reaches about 51MB, then I get the following Windows Script Host error on my Windows Server 2003 sp2 machine: Line: 181 Char: 2 Error: 0x8004106C Code: 8004106C Source: (null) I saw KB 828653 "Large WMI notification query may cause a quota violation", but found that since I had sp2 installed the properties for the Esscli.dll file on this server vs. that listed in the KB article 828653, the server version is newer. The server version of Esscli.dll is: version 5.2.3790.3959 (Srv03_Sp2_rtm.070216-1710). I called Microsoft on this and they told me that the hotfix didn't apply and that I'd have to pay $259 to get help with this. I can't justify that cost given the error is exactly what should have been fixed and is known by Microsoft, so i'm left on my own. Can anyone please help me??     - How to extend Timeout for WScripts? I've downloaded MS WMI Code Creator 1.0 and used it on a few occasions with considerable pleasure. One problem I cannot seem to solve is to extend the timeot for script runs. After about 30 seconds or so the script runs are terminated with an error message for some more complicated scripts. The word complicated means not the number of statements but apparently the functions they try to execute like accessing kernel, etc. How can I set this parameter to a longer value? I think I saw somehwere a statement for timeout that can be inserted directly into the scripts but now cannot recall. Also manually inserting this statement in every script that is generated may not be a good idea. I run Vista Ultimate 32 bits. That said: I have written a simple HTA script that iterates through parsing a text file by line, incrementing a Progress Bar. But because of the long process the background disappears if anything overlaps it, and a text <div> is not updated. How do I refresh (repaint) the HTA.     - Parsing email messages Hello, Originally I posted this to the Windows Server Scripting and then saw that it may be more appropriate for here. I would like to be able to parse through some email in Exchange and update a database accordingly. It does not necesarily have to interface directly with Exchange, it may simply work with Outlook (we're using 2003).     - Buring DVD Failure, Cont... I am reposting this because of a concern that it won't be read as a part of another thread which is already a few days down the line. Alex, I appreciate your help and information very much. Further developments: I sussessfully burned that iso image with Nero 7 on the rig with 4GBs but then I decided out of curiosity to repeat it with the script. The burning failed. It seems I got a completely prestine, empty disk. In the task amnager I observer memory usage mounting slightly over 2Gbs but not as much as 2.65 Gbs that could be expected from the source iso file. I suspect there is another issue involved. Perhaps WMI cannot handle such big files no matter what. Nero 7 employed buffering which was evident from the fact that the memory usage never exceeded 800 Mbs as was apparent from a progress bar at the bottom. on this superfast quad it took about 3 min. Thus I've decided to close the issue as far as such huge files are concerned. I dont do any pictures or music. Data files is my only need. I am wondering if you have any experience in handling iso files via any .NET classes or even scripts. I do have Winimage.exe installed and it opened the disk file momentarily and displayed the tree directory but I want to examine other options. I've been looking for a chance to get a handle on iso files one way or another. Perhjaps you know of a web site where the complete file format is described in detail, metadata including.     - MapNetworkDrive not working during first logon Greetings All, I am having a problem with mapping network drives the very first time a user logs onto a computer while their profile is being created. For some reason, during the very first interactive logon when a new user logs onto a PC they do not get their network drives. Other parts of the logon script (vbscript) appear to be working correctly. I can test for group memberhip, display a pop-up message, write to a log file etc. just not map a drive. If I manually run the logon script again once the desktop is up then all of the drives map correctly and every time after that first logon the drives get mapped properly. I have tried explicitly specifying the value for bUpdateProfile instead of relying on the default, which should be false, as indicated here: http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/8kst88h6(VS.85).aspx I have tried enabling userenv logs but I don't really know what to look for and I nothing jumped out as an obvious error. My environment is a Windows 2003 native mode domain, Windows XP Pro with SP2 on the destktops and the logon script is a vbscript that is specified on the Profile tab of the user account in active directory users and computers. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated. Work arounds would be ok too. Perhaps if there is a way for the logon script to detect that a new profile is being created then I can take some other actions. Anyhow, I=92ve attached a script located below that will map department shares based on the users active directory group membership and connected printer(s) based on their IP address. I am looking for a way to change the Account Policy->Account Lockout
Policy->Account lockout threshold through a vbscript or command line.

I am wanting to run this script on a computer in a workgroup, NOT a domain.
