    - replace part of a string I use a object that returns a list of computernames to perform a function. Since we have done a good job with our computer naming conventions I am using this object but want to replace just part of the computername to query the other device on network. For example, I get a list of machines named: DC1RES000101 DC2RES000102 DC3RES000103 As I get each machine using a For Each statement...I need to replace the 'RES' with a 'SCS' DC1SCS000101 DC2SCS000102 DC3SCS000103 How can I do a replace of the three letters in middle of computerName.     - VBScript Parsing XML Question Hello everyone, I have an xml file which I need to loop through using vbscript. I am looking for some help to read this file. I would need to store each servername for each server element, of which there could be anywhere from 1-300. I also need to loop through the hotfix nodes for each server element save the hotfix name with the servername if it matches a certain string. Basically, I need to do the following: 1. Loop through each server node. 2. Get the server name. 3. Loop through each hotfix element in the current server node and save the name if it matches some text. 4. Save the servername and any hotfix names found for that server node. 5. Move onto the next server node and repeat the process until the xml file is complete.     - File renames, en masse Hi - a client running a W2k domain w/XP Pro workstations (not that it's specifically relevant) has currently got a slew of files in their main shared folder tree, which they'd like to rename for organization/sorting purposes. There are probably about 3000 files in total, in multiple subfolders. They're mostly Office files (Word & Excel). Currently, the files are named similarly to the following: X-00-dd-mm-yy-keywords-author.doc ...where the "X" is some initial for the type of file (e.g. M=memo), "00" is the last two digits of the project number, etc. To make things easier to sort, they're looking at something like the following, instead: X-00-yyyy-mm-dd-keywords-author.doc ....I'd suggested that even if this is possible, it might be more useful to use yyyy-mm-dd-X-00-keywords-author.doc for sorting purposes. However, as I'm a complete moron when it comes to this sort of thing, I thought I'd post in here. I know how to do some extremely simple things with batch files, and that's about it. I'd do a complete full backup first, of course, and would run this overnight. Anyone want to help me look brilliant for this client?     - MS Word handling server side. PLEASE HELP Hy I know there are a lot of MS Word topics, but none of them helped me with my problem. I'm trying to open a word file wich is situated on our server and to safe it into the same directory as an HTML file. But i get always the same error "Command failed" on the line of the Open statement. I actually tried almost everything and i'm running out of time. I checked that the there are full control permissions on the winword.exe and on the file directory i also tried to to the word part client side, but nothing and i mean nothing happens.     - response.write question I have written an asp/vbscript script that returns some personal details to a flash frontend using the following code. response.write "vRESPONSE=success&vUSER_ID=45&vNAME=Fred&vCOMPANY=some company" This works fine until the variable value has an ampersand in it i.e response.write "vRESPONSE=success&vUSER_ID=45&vNAME=Fred&vCOMPANY=Fred & Co." and then it fails since it looks like the start of a new variable name. So I then tried to urlencode the values so ampesand became %26, which works fine for the ampersand but then some other characters get screwed up, particuarly extended unicide values.     - Need help on simple "FOR" script For maintenance purposes I need a script that will delete the Temp files and Temporary Internet Files. Due to the nature of a utility we're using to manage client PCs, this script will run as a scheduled task with admin credentials, and preferably will clear out these files under all profiles on the target system. I know there are other approaches (eg, edit the login script or logoff script), but if someone can get the script below to work (I found it through searches though the poster could not get it to function), it would be greatly appreciated. Or potentially suggesting an alternative script to the one below - whatever works!     - Add User to Local Administrators Group Hi all- I need a script that I can run from my admin workstation. It would add a user to the remote workstations Administrators group. Now the tricky part, I need to be able to add the current user who is logged on to the Administrators group. Why you ask? We use a legacy app that requires the user be a local admin and I screwed up and set a Restricted Groups policy that erased all of the local admins except the Domain Admin group. I am not a script writer, I'm only an editor :) I have found scripts to add users/groups to the local admin (easy if you know who to add) and scripts that detect the logged on user but nothing that I can cobble together to do both. I'm thinking of something like this: get list of domain computers from AD use generated list to call psloggedon and get the user info use that list to call psexec and cmd /c net localgroup administrators "psloggedon user"/add log success / failure Anyone want to take a crack at it?     - Calculate time difference in mini-second with VBScript Hi All, I have two questions. First, we wrote a script to monitor file server response time. But datediff() function can only calculate time difference in seconds. We are asked to provide data in mini-second. Is this possible in VBScript? Or, i have to use vb.net? 2nd question, we wrote a script to list file service connection information on a fie server, then try to check virus defination file on connected client using WMI. But some of this client is not in our domain. When this occurs, the script tale very long time to retry. Is is possible to set a timeout value before create a wmi connection?     - Closing Word instantly Frequently, my Word 97 gets frozen and then I use the Close Program dialog box to kill it, but the Close Program d.b. often takes a good long time to display the dialog that actually closes Word, so I'm sitting there waiting for maybe 30 seconds or more to complete this process. Is there a way via a .vbs file (or maybe some other kind of file) whereby Word can be closed instantly and in one step, without having to deal with two dialog boxes? Thanks.     - If Then Exit Do I have created a user creation script. It reads user attributes from a text file and creates one user at a time. It basically runs like While there are rows in the text file Do read value1 read value2 read value3 read value4 do a whole bunch of stuff (set attirbutes, add users to groups, etc) Loop Let's say though that value2 must be exactly 6 digits in length. If not, the script should fail creating this user account and move on to the next. I thought of using Exit Do, but won't that end the script rather then moving to the next user? Is there a way to do this. I just figure it would be faster and make the most sense to stop the creation of the specific account and move on to the next one.     - Modifying the Registry Hi, Here's my problem: I want to shedule on legacy Windows Servers (Windows 2000 Servers) to run the Sysinternals contig.exe application, which is very useful and powerful to defragment drives and folders. But before running the contig.exe, you have to accept the EULA by clicking on the "I accept" button of a pop-up window. Once accepted, several keys and a dword are added to the registry. I want to schedule this task by using a "special user" allowed to connect as a batch job only. It doesn't have any profile, and, very important, doesn't have any keys in the registry under the HKEY_USERS. Once running this script for the first time by the scheduler, the EULA pop-up is not displayed, so no new keys can be added to the registry, and then the script cannot run and waits for the click on the "I accept the EULA" button. My goal is to create automatically the keys and the dword value before the schedule task runs this script, and then the EULA will be already accepted without clicking on this button. Can someone explain me why in the following script, the creation of the keys and the value is not working. Thanks a lot.     - running a vbs script in scheduled task I believe I saw this topic before but I cannot see any suggested solution. My question is: I got a vbs script that runs perfectly if I execute in a cmd shell cscript sample.vbs > outfile All output is captured in the outfile. If I put the same line in a schedule task, the task will be executed but no output is captured in the outfile. How can I overcome this? Thanks for any suggestion. PS.     - call a batch file within VB script??? I am newbie with scripting and programming. I have a VB script that run a ping.exe command to see if the other server is up. Most of these offices connect to my domain using either a client or a site-to-site VPN. To connect to a recent deployed application I wrote a VB script that maps a drive then calls the application. Problem is that sometimes the application starts before the drive is mapped. Some of the VPN connections are slow and it may take 30 secs or more to get the drive mapped. In addition to the standard logs SYSTEM, APPLICATION and SECURITY I have another log "MYLOG" that is created and appended to by several in house applications. Unusually, if I run the above query on an Server 2003 without a SP1 I do not get the instance of my own log file "MYLOG" returned. If I run the query on a Server 2003 with SP1 then I do. I also seem to be unable to find the instance on any XP SP2 machines. Furthermore, to add to the confusion the Win32_NTLogEvent table does contain events for all 4 logs including my inhouse eventlog "MYLOG". Does anyone have any ideas on what may be going wrong? Is there a way to modify printer settings via a script?

I have over 30 computers on the network connected to 2 network printers
shared via Win 2K3 server. I already have a script to connect the printers
and set the default based on user groups.

Is there a method to modify the printer prefences globally?
I am looking for default printer tray options and other options that my be
printer specifiy. IE make sure each workstation knows that printer a has a
duplexer and stapler where printer b only has a duplexer.

When I make theses changes on my printer share it does not seem to effect
the clients settings.

Any thoughts?
