    - Shared AND Overridable <-- Why not?! I want to make some shared methds overridable but dotNet will not allow me to do so. Why not? What possible reason could there be to not allow that? Yes, i know i can make a sigelton and wrap shared methods, but that is just moronic considering that a the shared members are just references to special forms of a 'singelton' instance, or am i wrong here? Is it just one of those 'it not BEST programming practices = stick up the a**' reasons, like ALWAYS having to EXPLICITLY type cast EVERYTHING in some stupid languages like java? You know, the sort of reasons that just make you hate a programming language? Or will it work with .Net 2008? Or maybe there IS a better way to do what i want to do: Have a class with a name like SystemDB with shared members. It will coordinate all calls from different modules/threads with one (or two) database connections so that i can do something like: For Each oRecord As DataRecord in SystemDB.Query("select * from dual;") ' etc Next or SystemDB.InsertAsync("insert into....") without having to care/worry about which thread i am using or what my local instance reference was called. I am already using it throughout my code, but now i would like to make it extensible, so that i can have one base class called GlobalDB that must be inherited but wher different protected methods can be overridden. So considering that, is there a better way? I definitely do not want to have any additional prefixes like: otherClass.SystemDB.Something since that makes the whole thing ugly again..     - setting Access query criteria Hi, I have a access 2007 database with a cross tab query. Based on the selection critieria the cross tab may contain a different number columns in the result. For example if the query is 'select * from crosstab where project =1' would retun 6 columns, but if I change the query to project =2 then the result would be 20 columns. In my VB2008.net application I create the sql select statement. The problem seems to be when I do this I get back 20 cols, even if I am after project 1. the columsn from 7-20 are empty, but they are still there. When I execute the query within Access 2007, and build the selection criteria (project =1) into the crosstab query, it works properly and only returns 6 cols. So I figure I have to some how set the selection criteria in the cross tab query in the access database, then use vb to get the results. The application allows the user to repopulate the dataset to show different data in the application. As a test, I created a solution and added one of each type of project, and, sure enough, they look quite a bit different.     - Execute macro on event Hi all, In VS 2005, I want to have a macro run whenever I save a document. (I want to update my assembly version when I modify a source file in a project.) I've spent a couple of hours digging through the docs for creating macros, but I can't decipher them well enough to get this working. Specifically, I can't figure out how to actually get the macro to trigger when I save a document. I've created and initialized what appear to be the appropriate event handlers in my macro, but nothing interesting happens when I save a document. However, curiously, the VB version did not seem to work. Can anyone correct my VB version so that it returns the same results as the C# version? If someone with some experience with this could point me in the right direction - Lets say you have an MDI and 2 forms that open in that app. Each form looks at the customer database but displays it differently. If a customer gets added on form1, you would want it to instantly show up on form2. Same data - just displays the info differently. So im assuming there are 2 options to do this: 1. on the MDI form, have a 'global' public shared dataset, so as a dataset gets refreshed, it refreshes the new records instanlty on both 2.     - Scanning barcodes (urgent) Hi all I have made a application that scans barcode. The barcode scanner is connect to the PC via one of the USB ports. The technique that I use is hidden textbox that constantly has the focus to process the input on the keydown event. This works fine. It goes wrong when the user clicks for instance on one of the listboxes. Before start scanning the user has to click on a button on the toolbar first to set the focus back on the textbox. In some other cases I can do that in code. My customer has problems to click on the button first to start scanning again. My question is if there is a other method that constantly receives input from a barcode scanner and process it. If have tried to monitor the USB port but I can't figure it out how this works. What also interest me is how other programs do this. Hopefully someone can help me with suggestions, sample or websites with information about this topic. Thanks in advance.     - Installing VS - sql develop edition I am installing VS 2008 pro, First I uninstalled all express editions, and also sql express. Then installing vs 2008 pro it installed sql express again. Then inserting cd #2, for the SQL developer edition, it wants to update sql express, but i notice with the service pack 2 that not all options are available for the sql instance. Should I have re-uninstalled sql express after vs2008 installed it again and have just 1 clean developer edition on? I am a bit confused. In the mean time I will uninstall all sql instances and then try to re-install from the cd from scratch. Seeing that I can always re-install sql express if thats the way to go about it.     - O.T. copying 1TB from drive to drive in XP I ask a lot of VB questions here but this isn't related to VB. I'm not sure where to get help with this question but perhaps someone here would know and not mind giving me some ideas. We've got a Linux samba server currently storing very close to a terabyte of 70kb to 956kb files. They are stored in a directory structure by day. For instance files from August 1st 2007 are in a directory s:\2007\08\01. I need to copy all these file off this system and onto a 2TB windows drive. The Linux server needs to be left in production during this time. I'd like this to occur as fast as possible. I've tried everything and nothing moves anything very fast. I've tried TeraCopy, RoboCopy, SyncToy, and each was a real disappointment. I'm currently running 6 command windows each running XCopy on a different set of directories. For instance one command window runs this batch file: xcopy r:\2007\01\*.* s:\2007\01 /D /E xcopy r:\2007\02\*.* s:\2007\02 /D /E xcopy r:\2007\03\*.* s:\2007\03 /D /E another picks up with months 4, 5 and 6 etc. It's important to remember that this process could get interrupted and it would be terrible to have to overwrite files that were already copied in order to make sure all of them got copied so I want something that'll copy only files that don't already exist on the target drive -- hence the /D on the xcopy. According to Task Manager my pc is not taxed at all. Network trafficd is at 2.5 % MAX -- ususally less than 1%. The CPU Usage is 0 to 2%. This machine has 2GB ram.     - Changeing screen origin from top-left to bottom-left I'm playing around with a graphics project. I have a form that contains two toolstrips. One at the top running the width of the form from left to right and the other on the left running the entire height from top to bottom. I managed to draw a filled rectangle that fills the entire area between the toolstrips, but the drawing starts at the top left hand side of the form and disappears behind the Start bar. What I would like to do is Draw the rectangle at the bottom left hand side of the screen and stop to the top right. I have a reference book titled, "Visual Basic 2005 Programmers Reference." Inside this book on page 553 there is a subroutine called MapRectangles that maps real word coorodinates to device coordinates. This routine also allowed you to invert the direction of the Y-axis. My problem is: My real-world coordinates and device coordinates have to be plotted in the same area. Can anyone tell me how to do this? I have a vb.net 2005 project and wonder what else needs to be enabled to allow me to edit a line(s) of code while in break mode and then bne able to carry on with execution of the application. Currently, if I attempt to change a line of code (either the line I am currently on, or any subsequent lines) in break mode, I get a message at the bottom that indicates it is in read only mode and that no changes can be made. I have ensured that the "Edit and Continue" is enabled and that the JIT debugger (found in Tools->Options->Debugging) is also enabled. My co-worker using the exact same version of vb.net (same service pack and all) can do what it is I want to be able to do.     - ASP.NET GridView Control basic question This is probably a stupid question, but I've never used the ASP.NET GridView control before, so I hope you'll bear with me and give me a clue. I've got a Gridview on my webform to show the contents of a database table. It's configured to show both "edit" "delete" and "insert" options in the commandfield. That's all well and fine, the edit and delete options work as they're supposed to, but I simply don't understand the insert row functionality. First of all: When I start out, my table is empty. That means that instead of rows, the EmptyDataText is show, and thus no "insert" button is shown in the grid. How do I go about inserting the first row? Second: When my table DOES contain data, all three options are shown, but the Insert option doesn't do anything. I've fixed a couple of the issues I had with the code I was using previously, running a DoEvents in my char loop helped a great deal, also supplying the key_up after the key_down helped a lot. However, I have one problem I can't get round, and all the articles on the web don't describe this problem. The following table shows the problem: Input Data Caps Status Result "abcdefg" Off "" "abcdefg" On "" "ABCDEFG" Off "abcdefg" "ABCDEFG" On "ABCDEFG" It get's even stranger when I start trying to send Shift characters such as % or *. This is a data wedge application that is taking data from a PLC, this data could consist of any ascii characters so I can't afford to loose any. I have also looked into SendInput, but this doesn't appear to exists in the Compact Framework. PostKeybdMessage is apparently another way to achieve what I want, but I can't find a single example. One thing that is worrying me is the portable keyboard drivers, which are mainly written by the manufacturer of the unit, will this application work on some units and not others? Is there a way I can bypass the keyboard call and send data directly to the current application/control with focus?     - Deleting multiuple rows from a database... I am working on a new vb.net 2005 project using SQL server 2000 as the backend db. I have a listview where control I want a user to be able to select either just one or multiple rows in the listview and perform an action on them. If the user chooses to delete these rows I wonder what the best way to handle the deletion of multiple rows is... Right now I have a stored procedure for deleteing jsut opne row. i.e delete from {tablename} where field1 = Parm1". However, if the user selects say 10 rows, should I loop through the lsitview items and call this SP each time, OR can I somehow batch them so that I can run the stored procedure just once - which would then delete all selected rows using a clause similiar to the following.... "delete from {tablename} where field1 in (select field1 from{tempdeleteditemstable})" Any ideas if this is the best way to do it - or is simply looping through the listview and calling the stored proc to do a single row delete each time ok? have a problem installing visual basic 2008 express edition web install on
vista it completed installing the runtime components successfully and then it
says ".net framework 3.5 and the other components could not be installed".
how do i fix this? any help because it acts like it installed all the
components correctly then says they couldnt be installed and when i run the
continue script it just starts downloading and installing every component
from the beginning except the runtime files. it will not install the dot net
framework 3.5 on vista and iam pretty sure it may be 64 bit vista but it may
still be a 32 bit version. any help would be appreciated and this one stumped
me because it looks like its working correctly.

I'm not sure that anyone has ever explicitly said that VB 2008 willl
work on Vista.

If you want a seamless development platform across any OS- just use
VB6.

I'm afraid I have nothing to offer other than hope in this area.

I am successfully running VS2008 Professional on Vista ultimate 64bit.

So it should work. Express is a cut down version.

Perhaps you could ensure that you are running the setup routine with administrator
privilages, although I do not remember if I di that when I installed.

The only issue I have had with VS2008 is with development in conjunction
with IIS where the upgrade process of a VS"005 site required administrative
privilages and made a bad job of telling me this was what was wrong.

Perhaps others will have something more constructive to offer
