    - You must have a license to use this ActiveX control. My project uses a number of ActiveX controls from various sources. I received an update for one of them which I registered. If I go into a new project, I can add this control to the form and use it OK. However in an existing project, it comes up with the message "You must have a license to use this ActiveX control" so presumably it is still referring to the old control. You are not allowed to see the form it applies to as VB hides this. Your only action seems to be to edit Form1.Designer.vb and remove all references to the control (if you know which one it's referring to!). After this, I remove the reference to it under References in MyProject. I then save everything, but I still keep getting the message. I know that if I could get Form1 up I could add the control again and all would be well. I dread starting the project from scratch! How can I get out of this?     - Execute macro only for one solution Hi all, I have a solution that contains a bunch of projects. When I save a file in any of the projects in this solution, I want to execute a macro that updates the project's assembly version. But I only want this behavior for this one solution. Is there a way to have a Macro that fires for environment events only for a particular solution? (I guess I could have the event handler check to see if this is the desired solution before doing anything, but that's kind of a backward way of going about it. But maybe that's the Zen of macros.) On a related subject: Optimally, I would like to have the macro use some constants defined in an assembly in the solution when it updates the assembly version numbers.     - optional param in Method VS2005 Pro I have confusing results from an optional parameter in a method. Public Shared Function Parameter(ByVal parameterName As String, ByVal parameterValue As Object, Optional ByVal db_Type As FbDbType = Nothing) As FbParameter FbDbType is an enumeration with 0 = "Array", 1 = "BigInt" etc. When I call this method and omit the db_Type value like this: myParam = Parameter("param1", 1234) the value of db_Type is "Array" rather than "nothing" like I expect. I suspect this has something to do with the fact that the db_Type is really an Integer type and cannot be initialized to "Nothing". I need to test if db_Type has been initialized in my method and assign it to a var in the method. Is my suspicion correct and is there some other way to do this? I am using VB 2008 Express to write a small program to copy a directory structure and files from a CD to a folder on C: drive. I have a form with 2 buttons; one to do the copying and one to cancel.     - Reflection on obfuscated assemblies?? Hi, this is my scenario. I have a win forms application (EXE), this app uses an assembly that I also build (DLL). That assembly encapsulate several classes, for example, cTeachers, cStudents, cSchedules, etc. Some classes in the assemble have a custom attribute named IsThisAnApp that holds a boolean value. This value indicates if the assemble will expose properties like AplicationName, LevelOfProvilegesRequired, etc. A third application (EXE) is a generix security application that should, using reflection, scan a compiled assembly (DLL) looking for IsThisAnApp tag for every Assembly.GetExportedTypes. Once the security app detects a valid class, extract app info and insert it in a SQL Server Database. The Security app reads that info and allow users to custom security privileges for that app. Everithing works fine. My problem starts when, for the production environment, I deploy an obfuscated assembly and then everything crashes. For security reasons, when I obfuscate the assembly using a 3rd part software, I add wrong metadata information for the assembly.     - Pictureboxes moving on their own volition when form is displayed I have a user control that has this structure from top to bottom: Label1 Label2 PictureBox1 Label3 PictureBoxes2 through 11 All of the controls are anchored Top,Left. Pictureboxes 2 through 11 are right next to each other in the designer, with 1 pixel of space between them. This user control is added to a form that has this structure: Form TopLevelSplitContainer TopLevelSplitContainer.Panel1 other stuff TopLevelSplitContainer.Panel2 justAPanel myUserControl aDGV Depending on something happening in the background, it displays the UserControl or the DGV. The problem is when I the UserControl is displayed in my form, it spaces out pictureboxes 2 through 11 and ends up chopping off the right side of the last picturebox. I am adding the UserControl programmatically, but even if I just drop it on the justAPanel in the designer, it does the same thing. If I don't anchor the controls on MyUserControl at all, they don't spread correctly vertically, and they are actually wider horizontally than they would be if I anchored them. When added programmatically to the form, the usercontrol is set to dock Left and Top. If I don't dock it, it seems to center it, which chops off both sides of the usercontrol. Any ideas why my controls are being rendered differently in run mode than they are in design mode? My containing form is a user control, too, by the way, which does sit in an actual Form that has a minimum size and a default size that this panel should fit into if it weren't mucking up my picturebox locations. The reason I have 10 picture boxes is because each one has its own click event. Just thought I'd throw that in there before someone says "Why don't you just combine the picture boxes into one?". When I either add or remove a person from a group in AD, that group change does not show up on the local machine until I log out and log back in.     - the WebBrowser1_DocumentCompleted event only fires once I have a application which has a form with a webbrowser control on it (this webbrowser control is initially hidden) Using the WebBrowser1_DocumentCompleted action, i parse what's on the page and it if is not what is expected i flag up an error then close the form if it is what is expected then I show the webbrowser control to reveal the text The url is just a webpage which contains plain text. Once this form is closed then the next time the form is loaded (using form2.ShowDialog() )the WebBrowser1_DocumentCompleted action is not fired and hence does not run through my parsing code. I use Me.Close() to close the form and i thought it might be because the form was not being closed fully. Is there a way round this?     - visual basic 2008 on vista error have a problem installing visual basic 2008 express edition web install on vista it completed installing the runtime components successfully and then it says ".net framework 3.5 and the other components could not be installed". how do i fix this? any help because it acts like it installed all the components correctly then says they couldnt be installed and when i run the continue script it just starts downloading and installing every component from the beginning except the runtime files. it will not install the dot net framework 3.5 on vista and iam pretty sure it may be 64 bit vista but it may still be a 32 bit version. any help would be appreciated and this one stumped me because it looks like its working correctly.     - Shared AND Overridable <-- Why not?! I want to make some shared methds overridable but dotNet will not allow me to do so. Why not? What possible reason could there be to not allow that? Yes, i know i can make a sigelton and wrap shared methods, but that is just moronic considering that a the shared members are just references to special forms of a 'singelton' instance, or am i wrong here? Is it just one of those 'it not BEST programming practices = stick up the a**' reasons, like ALWAYS having to EXPLICITLY type cast EVERYTHING in some stupid languages like java? Or maybe there IS a better way to do what i want to do: Have a class with a name like SystemDB with shared members. It will coordinate all calls from different modules/threads with one (or two) database connections so that i can do something like: For Each oRecord As DataRecord in SystemDB.Query("select * from dual;") ' etc Next or SystemDB.InsertAsync("insert into....") without having to care/worry about which thread i am using or what my local instance reference was called. I am already using it throughout my code, but now i would like to make it extensible, so that i can have one base class called GlobalDB that must be inherited but wher different protected methods can be overridden. So considering that, is there a better way? I definitely do not want to have any additional prefixes like: otherClass.SystemDB.Something since that makes the whole thing ugly again..     - setting Access query criteria Hi, I have a access 2007 database with a cross tab query. Based on the selection critieria the cross tab may contain a different number columns in the result. For example if the query is 'select * from crosstab where project =1' would retun 6 columns, but if I change the query to project =2 then the result would be 20 columns. In my VB2008.net application I create the sql select statement. The problem seems to be when I do this I get back 20 cols, even if I am after project 1. the columsn from 7-20 are empty, but they are still there. When I execute the query within Access 2007, and build the selection criteria (project =1) into the crosstab query, it works properly and only returns 6 cols. So I figure I have to some how set the selection criteria in the cross tab query in the access database, then use vb to get the results.     - Scanning barcodes (urgent) Hi all I have made a application that scans barcode. The barcode scanner is connect to the PC via one of the USB ports. The technique that I use is hidden textbox that constantly has the focus to process the input on the keydown event. This works fine. It goes wrong when the user clicks for instance on one of the listboxes. Before start scanning the user has to click on a button on the toolbar first to set the focus back on the textbox. In some other cases I can do that in code. My customer has problems to click on the button first to start scanning again. My question is if there is a other method that constantly receives input from a barcode scanner and process it. If have tried to monitor the USB port but I can't figure it out how this works. Then inserting cd #2, for the SQL developer edition, it wants to update sql express, but i notice with the service pack 2 that not all options are available for the sql instance.
