In the last few days, every time that I attempt to compose an e-mail, words
automatically appear in the send to line, and spurious words and
charactersappear as I type in the content, or if I open MS Word to create a
document, words automatically appear. It would seem to me that I have a
virus or trojan in my system. My anti-virus and firewall are regulalrly
updated, but I may have accidentally let something through. Also, the
letters typed do not always appear immediately on the screen. Please could
somebody advise me how to get rid of this effect.

This is a sample of what is happening. The following characters appeared as

Let me guess:

You are using a machine with OfficeXP installed?

And, it has a microphone of some sort--perhaps built-in to a laptop, or the
monitor on a desktop, or just sitting there on the desk?

This symptom is typical of having the sound recognition features of Office
turned on. Look for a small toolbar near the bottom of the screen, or use
Help in Office to learn how to turn it on and off. If your microphone is
easy to find, try unplugging it to see if the symptoms go away.
