PLEASE HELP me get rid of these stupid messages that look
official saying that my computer is open for the world to
see. I have followed the instructions about checking the
box to protect my computer...
This DOES NOT WORK. Any suggestions would be helpful.
I actually would rather delete this program, since I have
no use for it.

Windows messenger or the messenger service? They're two different
beasts. Windows messenger popups, as far as I know the only way to stop
those is to uninstall windows messenger. As for the messenger service
ones have you installed a firewall and blocked the port the service
uses?

Go to system admin>services and disable windows
messenger. Very simple to do.

Except that:
1) Windows Messenger isn't represented there
2) The Messenger Service, which is there, is a bit of a red herring. The
messages that come through that are a symptom of a greater problem with your
computer's security and disabling the messenger service is at best curing
the symptoms while doing absolutely nothing to fix the actual problem.

Phhht! You may never have had a pop-up but your computer is still wide open
to the net if you don't have a firewall; Shields Up on scans a limited
number of ports, the ports that spammers/scammers/hijackers/viruses can use
is in the tens of thousands; just look at RPC; one version uses 444, I'll
bet THAT's not checked by Shields Up.

Have you been to the latest ShieldsUp!! page? It has been complely
revamped with a simple test, a common test and test the first 1056 ports.
It also has a customized port scan and comprehensive descriptions of port
usage. It is being hammerd right now as people test their security. :)
Also in the news.grc.com newsgroups there is significant discussion about
this latest attack. The discussion about raw sockets is also interesting.
newsgroup is grc.news.feedback topic RPC problem.
