    - Automatic certificate deployment for 802.1x network authentication Hi all I have a problem setting up ab big number of Windows XP (SP2) PCs for using IEEE802.1x authentication on the wired network. I'm searching for a way to automatically deploy a system certificate (with private key) into the certificate store of "local computer". The certificate comes from a third party CA. Does anybody now a way to automatically deploy a third party certificate into the "my certificates" store of "local computer"? I'de like to do following: - users are owners of their homedirs (we use owner-based quotas) - users cannot change permissions of their homedirs Is that possible?     - Certificates, Autoenrollment, Credential Roaming and User's Personal Hi, I have a user cert set up for autoenrollment. The cert is published in AD and the "Do not automatically reenroll if a duplicate certificate exists in Active Directory" checkbox is checked. The CA is a Windows 2003 Enterprise CA. Credential Roaming is also set up in the environemnt. Autoenrollment and credential roaming seem to be working fine but I do encounter an issue when a workstation is reimaged or the certs are deleted from the user's personal store on a workstation. After one of these occurences the user's personal store never gets a copy of the user's existing certs on that workstation. The only way to populate the store is to have them issued a new certificate by deleting the user's certs from the CA and their AD object. After this the autoenrollment process will populate the personal store with a brand new user certificate. I'd rather not generate a new cert each time.     - Unreliability of CD Boot. Just a general comment, but wondered what other admins' feelings are on this: In the days of floppies, if you inserted a boot floppy, then the machine would either boot from the floppy, or else not boot at all. Which was sensible behaviour. With CD booting, the machine will possibly boot form the CD, but if that fails then it will boot from the hard-disk instead. This can have several very undesirable consequences: -If the HD is virus-infected (or might be so) not only do you risk exposing the LAN to the virus, but you have to throw away the CD you were trying to boot from, as it has no write-protect and therefore may have been compromised. -If you are preparing a rollout, the preparation will be undone and you'll have to start all over again. Strikes me that this 'fall-through to HD boot' mechanism is yet another example of the braindead design which we see so often these days. In the old days computers were more limited, but what they had was designed to do its job and work properly. Not so nowadays. Strictly speaking this is a BIOS design-issue, not a Microsoft one, but thought I'd raise it here anyway. Tag: windows firewall Tag: 97512

    - Password policy in domain 2003 Hi As far as I know there can be only one password policy. I configured the main GPO in the root for specific password policy, I have an OU with blocked inheritance is checked, and I created a new gpo and linked it to this OU, this gpo have a diffrent set of password policy, I run the RSOP on the server under that OU, and I got the new set of password policy that is linked to this OU.     - Track user/computer/ip by Caller Logon ID Greetings All, I got a situation where account was deleted from AD using domain admin account and would like to track it to IP or Computer that was done from. I did a bit of investigation and located event that was logged on a Domain Controller when that happened.     - Best Way to Track Service Being Turned On? I have a strange situation on a firewall I need help with. The server is Windows 2000 running ISA Server 2004. For reasons I cannot determine yet, the Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service keeps getting set to Automatic. I set it manually to disable, and I have verified that nothing in group policy should be turning it on. A few days go by, and then I login and see the service set to Automatic, and sometimes turned on. I don't believe the other operator of that particular server has enough knowledge to make this change, nor do I believe he would be malevant enough to do it. So I have a problem. What is the best method to get an email alert at the moment that: 1) A particular service has its service status changed to Automatic? 2) The service is started?     - Getting rid of my Certification Authority We don't really use this anyway, although some people did, in the past. I have to decomission the hardware on which the CA lives and for the near-term, have decided to just not establish another. I have a couple of questions: First of all, if somebody, somewhere, has an encrypted folder (they all swear they don't, but I can't go poking around to make sure), will they lose access to their files or will their files simply become unencrypted when I decomission the CA? Secondly, when I look at issued certificates, I see some of my server - most notably, my DCs.     - Certification Authority 0x8009480f error Certification Authority 0x8009480f error : the dns name is unavailable and cannot b e added to the subjectalternatename. This error I get all the time when automatic certificate allocation wants to give a certificate to a domain pc. I have a W2K3 domain, the pc is W2K SP4. in the logs there is nothing wrong with DNS. Tried to kick te pc out of the domain and back, nothing changed. Removed CA and reinstalled, nothing changed. Something strange when I follow procedure for configuring aut. cert. alloc., after selecting the computer out of the templates, I won't get the enterprise ROOT CA, just window with name and computer.     - AVG 7/8 - general story I first bought AVG 7.0 (not free) in Feb 2007 and it worked okay. I also upgraded to 7.5 a few months ago and it was okay. Last night I upgraded to 8.0 and I hated it so I uninstalled it. I didn't like the idea of its having its own firewall and it often asked me if I should allow/disallow something. The only AVG big exe file was the one from Feb 2007 so I installed that. Sometime along the way, it said my AVG was too old to get updates so there was a "repair" file which I used. I am not clear what it did. It now says 7.5 and not 7.0 all over the program and it's acting quirky. If I click on Test Center it will crash completely. I'm not sure if it's going to keep updating viruses. The AVG firewall keeps coming on, although I thought 7.0/7.5 never had one. A scan seems to work okay. the system tray icon is always black and white. Some elements of 8 must have remained although I uninstalled it, eh? Tag: windows firewall Tag: 97450

    - AVG 8 problems I just had the worst time upgrading AVG 7.5 to 8. I didn't like 8 because of all the new dialog boxes so I uninstalled and reinstalled 7.5. I don't like the AVG firewall so I turned it off, but whenever I restart, the AVG firewall is on again (I have my Windows firewall on all the time). If I check for upgrades in AVG it gives a long list of priority updates and optional updates. I'm afraid to click on those as I don't know what it will do.     - internal ssl cert that works with domain and without I have a web site on an internal iis 6.0 server. Some users use the host header name of the website with the domain attached and some connect without: for example: https:\\internal vs https:\\internal.company.com I have an SSL certificate that has the host header name and those that connect without the domain connect straight through, no errors. If they use the https:\\internal.company.com however they get a certificate error as the name is different then the certifcate. I can change the certificate to include the domain but then the host header name by itself gives the error. is there a way to allow both to work without a certificate error? I tried a spin on the wildcard certificate creating a request with "internal.*" but that was no go as well. Do you need to "turn anything on" to get IIS 6.0 to accept the "*" maybe?     - Port 137/138 accesses within home network A few newly installed applications required a modification of firewall rules, which prompted me to clean up the convolution of rules that I've amassed over the years. Afterward, I started to get regular outbound UDP connections from "SYSTEM" to 192.168.1.255, ports 137-138. Much web searching ensued. It could be bad (http:// www.linklogger.com/UDP137.htm) or just IP/name resolutions (http:// www.iss.net/security_center/advice/Exploits/Ports/137/default.htm and others). This is a very simple home network, consisting of a DSL modem/router, and zero to two laptops connected via LAN cable to WiFi (either Windows 2000 or WindowsXP). One page visited was http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;832017. It looks like it was meant for non-home IT folk, possibly with a degree in the area. For the schmoe home user, what is the advisability of allowing such accesses to addresses within the home network? A bit of rummaging turns up RFC 1918, which says what such address ranges are. In my case, it seems to be the 16-bit block at 192.168.xxx.yyy. Laptops on this "network" are likely to be installed with standard security applications (firewall, AV, Spybot Search&Destroy).     - Why firewall messages are sometimes so vague After much web searching, it seems that anyone who has used older firewalls (e.g Kerio, Sygate) will have been annoyed by messages like "Generic Host Process for Win32 Services from your computer wants to connect to some.changing.ip.address", or some outgoing ping (icmp). The remote destination ip address often resolves to Microsoft or some large content provider. The application that is doing this is always nondescriptly described as svchost or tcpip kernel driver. This makes it impossible to maintain a decent set of firewall rules. I've already disabled automatic windows updates, got rid of symantec, and such messages continue to occur, though less often. How do the more experienced maintainers of home firewalls deal with this lack of detail in tightening up their firewall rules? I have, and use, Spybot S&D. I'm hoping that there is a general appraoch that doesn't entail that a user spend much less than 50% of his or her computer time dealing with the security aspects.     - Network security general discussion I am in the process of deciding how to allow remote user access to our network. I think I want to set up a VPN with both router-to-router IPSEC tunnels for remote offices and a few PPTP tunnels for users from home.
