what are firewalls?

Can someone explain to me what firewalls are and what they do?

They are the metal walls between the engine compartment and the passenger compartment in an
automobile. As the name implies, it is a wall against fire so the passaengers don't get
burned.

from getting burned. The internet is the engine compartment and the computer is the
passenger compartment.

In the case of software, a FireWall helps to prevent the bad aspects of the Internet of
gettuing into your computer.

If you are on Broadband Internet such as cable and DSL, then get a Cable/DSL Router. They
act as simplistic FireWalls and keep the hackerrs and Internet worms from getting in.
additionally, you can get a Router with a full FireWall implementation built-in. Best think
about these devices is that no software is needed 9on the PC. The second good thing about
them is they will allow you tyo share that one Internet connection with upto 253 computers
or Game Boxes (XBox, PlayStation/2, etc.)]

Hello !
Firewall is a protective barrier between your PC and the outside world.
It protects you from hackers and other intruders from gaining
remote access to your PC and also from networks viruses/worms (like Sasser).
It also makes your PC invisiable for hacker softwares and
even if hackers find your PC it will block the attack.
Firewalls scans all your incoming (and outgoing) traffic and
immediately block it if it is unsolicated.
