I'm not sure I know what you mean by "ones that do not
have an installer"
A single bad active x control can ruin your operating
system.
How are these "installer-free" programmes intending to
get onto your machine?

You have two choices.Either:talk to people who have
installed and can recommend these apps, read reviews and
tech reports.Or be click-happy and download,anyway and
deal with whatever consequences might befall your O.S. as
a result.

There are some programmes you would be crazy to
install.They are well known.If you aren't certain,ask.

Examples of Bad to the bone
apps:Spykiller,Spyhunter,Spyware Nuker,Spy Bouncer.ALL
illegal file-sharing apps.Anything signed by
Gator,abetterinternet.

But,hey,I'm just a boring old fogey.

Actually I was referring to this. If I download a program that has an
uninstaller option on it (in the event that I do not like the program and
want to rid of it), is it better than getting a program that DOES NOT have
an uninstaller option- I know that I can remove programs from the
add/remove section in the control panel. So just knowing that there IS and
uninstaller included with the program, is that better than there not being-
Here is an example-Months ago I installed hotbar. That was way before I
started educating myself with these newsgroups. WHen I heard about all the
spyware they have I decided to uninstall it. I had to go to their webtsite
to get the uninstaller. Even after uninstalling it,pestpatrol kept showing
some of it in my c drive somewhere and I had a hard time getting rid of
everything-
So thats why I asked if I should stay away from downloading stuff that does
not come w/ an uninstaller-One more question for anyone who reads: Sadie
gave his/her examples of what he/she would not install. I have read the
reviews on the c/net and that does help me consider what to download & not.
WHat do you recommend also to stay away from??? Is there a web site to read
on the bad ones. I know Kazaa is one of them too. good day!! :-)

O.K.,I understand what you mean now.I just worried that
maybe you were allowing installs to run directly from
webpages..(You'd be amazed what goes on)

This has a good search facility onsite where you can look
up "pests":

http://www.pestpatrol.com/

Also http://cexx.org is great for information on suspect
apps.

Then there's http://www.sysinfo.org

That'll help you out if you want to check any suspect
items set to run on start up.There's also a good
comprehensive list of active x BHOs.
The site is often inaccessible because of DOS attacks. It
often reaches its cgi limit.

Vis-a-vis "uninstallers".The Jury is out on that
one.Lop.com,for example, offers a removal tool for its own
malware.Would you trust them to do a proper job?

A lot of the pernicious trojan-style programmes can only
be removed manually.Irrespective of any promises
made.Read those EULAs with care!

Have fun,anyway,it aint *all* bad,
