A gay on the net tell me that he has detected my IP/OS/IE, and it was
corret, a few hours later (no more than 4 hours!), my self-defined
Chinese characters in the XP Chinese input storage all gone! It
appears this gay has sent some kind of package into my mechine that
erase the self-defined phrases. At that point, my firewall was not
ON, so cann't see anything from the log.

This gay mentioned that he is a expert in JS, is it possible that one
can code something in JS and sent it to a target by just knowing the
target's IP/OS/IE, and perform a function, such as erasing the
self-defined phrases?

Thanks in advance.

So, why do you have a firewall anyway, when you just turn it off? Why do
you turn off the firewall and open your computer to the internet? Do you
know how to configure your computer to make it secure?

Is this possible? ( by Sadie

Sadie

Yes.It's possible.Think about the times you scanned to
ensure that your firewall was working effectively.
Soho's port scanning facility for example, will detect
what O.S. you are running. Also what services if your
machine is not properly secured.
Likewise, webpages can determine what browser you have, and
see whether scripting is enabled.A Trendmicro online
virus scan checks to ensure your scripting controls will
allow their virus checking scripts to run..

Websites can read your browser cache, see where you've
been on the net..look inside your O.S...all sorts of
things.

What this person probably did was ping your computer. Were
you in a chatroom,by any chance?Or using one of those IRC
chat horrors?
By pinging your machine,he was able to retrieve this
information.Essentially,it happened because your computer
is responding to incoming packets.
Learn how to configure your firewall.

As for the vanishing Chinese input.I recall reading of
this exact incidence here.

There's someone or something (i.e. a backdoor trojan)out
there stealing fancy chinese lettering.

That does not automatically mean they are gay, though.

Sadie

John, you must mean "guy" as in a man, right??? The word gay means something
else. I read another post you posted earlier "Norton firewall setting

friendly reminder from a female, I might add. Good luck

Hi Gerald,

I forgot to tell you that this particular mechine is behind a router,
which support to have some kind of hardware firewall, therefore I turn
off the firewall sometime to get some speed, this is not a up-to-date
mechine and the Norton slow it down sustantially.

I might have to post this correction, what was meant in the my
previous post is a person on the internet, or a "guy", not a "gay",
since I'm not so even sure about his/her gender. If this has, indeed,
cause some kind of confusion, I would take the full responsibilities
of it.

I do think this particular person( a guy or a gay or what so ever) has
done something to my mechine, but I could not be sure what exactly
he/she did. It appears that the sefl-defined Chinese phrases erasion
is the only thing he/she did so far, since I turn on the firewall
after that and nothing has been reported by the firewall(BTW, I test
the firewall through Steve Gibson's site and it seems working).

My question is that if he/she did erase my self-defined phrases by
means of some kind of JS script, would he/she leave some trace which
could be found if I acquire the suitable tools?

Thanks !

Found the word "gay" 3 times in your post.
The letter "a" is farmost left, and the letter "u" is upper row right-hand
on a QWERTY keyboard letter arrangement. Why do I feel this was an
intentional mistake if it is one?

Well in that case, it is even simpler. My guess: I would say it was your
own fault: You don't have a not up-to-date machine with a not-up-to-date
internet explorer (or even a up-to-date IE is vulnerable for several
well-known attacks). The guy told you your IP which is very easy to
figure out, your OS is Windows XP (just a blind guess) and you run IE
(which is correct in many cases.)

So let me ask you this: how did that guy tell you all that and what did
you do then? Did he give you a URL to go to? Something like that? And
you went there and opened your computer for him...

Only my guess, could be wrong... Another thing: do you know how to
properly configure your router? Did you do it? Are you sure? (I hope it
is not a WLAN router that you have never configured at all because that
noone can help you anymore...)

Again: your IE tells the webserver your IP, OS and IE version each time
it opens a web page. Anyone can figure that out easily.

Hi,
As English appears not to be your first/main language, I'll tell you
something which will hopefully help in future.

A "Guy" is a person, usually male (though "You Guys" is used to refer to a
group of both males and females).

The word "Gay" often refers to someone's sexual orientation, and is usually
used to describe homosexual males.

If you confuse the two terms, it can make it difficult for many to
concentrate on the point you are trying to make, because an error like this
can completely change the way your post appears to other people.

Regards
Rob Moir.

This may be an "non-native speaker" problem? It wasn't typo, it is a
confusion between the words, since they sound similar to the
non-native speaker. Hope that didn't offend anyone here?

Thanks Gerald,

After I had the router up and connected to the net, I went to
Gibson's site and did a scan, the report said that all the service
ports are stealth, except 113, which was closed. Usually, 113 is not
that easy to hide since it monitor some kind of incoming stuff (that's
what I was told)? So I thought the router is OK. A couple weeks ago,
I went to Gibson site and got the leak tester, and found that the
tester could make connection from my mechine to the outside world,
this make me concern about the security of this mechine again. I
doen't know if I could stop the leak by config the router, so I put up
the Norton firewall to stop the leak, in the mean time stopped all the
mechine on my LAN talk to each other.

There should be some setting in the Norton which would allow me to
make my mechines to talk to each other, but I don't know what is that
setting at this point of time.

Please let me know if you know how could I solve this problem, or
where could I find the relative information in solving this problem.

Thanks again for your kindly help.

John

"Offend" anyone? No, no, no...I think you got Lil' Dave
excited. In fact, he wants this to be intentional on your
part, because Lil' Dave is looking for big things
here...just make sure you don't reply to him unless you
want him to be excited again.

Since you repeat it over and over.

You wish he had hidden desires, right? Try not to get too
excited here.

Hi

I am a javascript programmer and there is nothing to worry about if the script ( some web program that run at your computer ) can detects ur IP address, country and operating system information

This can be done usually by all the gud sites, to route the client request to the nearest possible server, so that the downloading speed can be increased

As in your case, the script is being used in a wrong sense just to fear you, so that you can either download a third party utility or purchase something that is not requried by the computer

This is a normal script and there is nothing to worry about in this case...
