MSN Been Hacked
My hotmail account has been hacked and Microsoft's
website is about as helpful as your average bureaucratic
mess - ie: none at all. If someone can direct me to the

the automated response sheet is useless to me.

Can visit to website endanger security?
I received a spoof email asking me to update my CitiBank
details. It was obviously created by an oriental English
speaker, but I was curious because the link therein led
to an https: site (ie, secured site). So I had a look,
and was redirected to an insecure site. I looked there,
thinking they would have a form for us suckers to fill in
giving away passwords etc, but the page was totally
blank, and even though my browser said "Done" I still had
my hourglass (but this often happens anyway).
Has my curiosity made me vulnerable? I don't have a
firewall because when I installed ZoneAlarm I didn't
understand it. (I know... but all it seemed to do was
list IP numbers and I just carried on as normal. I don't
normally visit dodgy sites.
Obviously I won't do it again, and yes, I do know what
curiosity did to the cat.

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.2---->Replacement for the program ?
I have run Spybot since it first came out and love the way the program
works. It seems to work well with Zone Alarm Pro and Ad-Aware Plus picking
up the things the others miss.
However...Not sure if the Spybot people are on a long vacation or too busy
with Beta 1.3, but there have been no updates for almost 6 weeks (Since 4
March) and in the past, they usually have a new update about every week.
Also they are not responding to email support, before they always did within
a day.
Does anyone know what is going on with them ? I hope Mr. Kolla did not
"retire" as its a great little program, but no updates in this long a period
is not a good sign to me.
Anyone have an alternate to Spybot that I can use until (if..) Spybot starts
updating again ? I have seen a few names tossed around in here, but never
really paid attention to the comments as Spybot had been working so well for
me. Looking for something that works well on Windows XP Pro (I am also using
the SP2 RC1 release)
Thanks !

SUS Question
Hello Everyone,
I have searched the KB and looked for an SUS newsgroup, but there appears to
be nothing available. I have a problem and I guess that this is the best
place to request assistance. Here it goes:
I installed SUS on a Windows Small Business Server 2003 machine and
redirected SUS to work off of the "companyweb" web site. When I attempt to
Synchronize the server and approve the updates, the server appears to
synchronize correctly, but when I go to approve the updates, I receive this
error message: "No Packages ar available to be approved. This may be a
because a synchronization has never been performed of because your Software
Update Services Server is not functioning correctly."
The approval log appears to work fine, but the approve updates page does
not...
Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

3rd Party Server monitoring!
G/day forum,
I've been asked to recommend a software that sits on a file server that
montors usage activity, users, access, etc. I've enabled a high level of
user monitoring through GPO but its difficult to analyse the high volume of
logs generated.
Is their a 3rd party application that i can use to comprehend these logs?
Seperate 3rd party logging? Host intrusion protection?
Your thoughts are greatly appreciated.

security options for embedded objects in MSWord
I have recently tried desperately to set password
protection on a word doc object embedded within another
word document (what I'm really wanting is to keep part of
a word document password protected, this is the only way I
could think of doing it) but without success.
I have tried the normal way, by opening the embedded doc
and using Tools|Options|Security tab to set a password but
as soon as I exit this dialog box and close the embedded
doc the password protection settings appear to get wiped.
Does anyone know if what I'm trying to do is possible, or
is this a bug?
Or do you have any suggestions on a better way to do what
I'm attempting as described in the brackets above?
Thanks in advance

How do you guys handle security in NT4 domain??
I already posted this in another NG. Sry. No1 replied thats why I posted
here. I'm new at posting, I'll remember next time to post in multiple ngs
the right way....
Hello,
Just started looking at this ng. I was wondering in an NT4 domain , do
you guys rely on group policies only for security at the workstations? about
three yrs ago our company final thought it might be a good idea to implement
security for the night shift users. I went through setting up group policies
for the night shift. I restricted their logins to run only 3 company
programs and removed all the unnecessary stuff such as regedit, run, etc. It
"seemed" like group policies were enough, however i found out its easy to
get to DOS prompt, other programs,network neighborhood, and local drives. In
addition to group policies, i had to change NTFS permissions on various
exe's and dll's to further "lockdown" the NT4 workstations. I was just
wondering if any1 else does the same thing.
Just in case any1 wants to know, here's our setup :
NT4 Domain
90% of local workstations are NT4 SP6a (not all are patched. However, all
test machines where fully patched.)
1 pdc, 2BDC SP6a patched.
95% of user profiles are mandatory.

security downloads
Hello,
Every time I turn on my computer and access the Internet,
there are more security downloads. Is there a way that I
can download these without incurring Internet charges? I
pay by the hour, and lately I'm using a lot of hours
trying to download the security stuff (and the downloads
are not always installed correctly for some reason).
Also, if I'm not sitting at my computer, the Internet
access logs out automatically after about 20 minutes of
no use. What happens to the download information? Does
it all get lost? I have logged back in a couple of
times, and then after I thought everything downloaded, I
got messages that the information was downloaded but not
installed. What does that mean and how do I fix it?
I am beginning to wonder why I got a new computer with
Windows XP Home Edition. I never had any issues with my
Windows 98.
Thank you for your attention to this. Please let me know
how to download information with correct installation,
and please let me know if it can be done without constant
Internet access. Tag: thanks to Bbonner Tag: 50467

DNS permissions?
We've noticed security permissions assigned to each entry in the DNS
database, as well as each subnet.
Could anyone explain why these permissions are there? My guess is that it
allows you to restrict lower level admins from making changes to critical

metrics for security
I would to start a discussion to take the security progress metrics beyond
theoretical and into the practical, realistic and usable to measure progress
and relative security. I've had a couple of brainstorm sessions and given
it some thought, but for the criteria to become useful, I think there should
be an active community discussion that asks hard questions and refines the
criteria to an accepted set. If we achieve that, we may even enable some
good independant apples-to-apples analysis.
I've given some thoughts to the criteria and I think:
. The criteria should be measurable and distinguishable
. The methodology should be repeatable by objective 3rd-parties
. The criteria should support real world scenarios
. The criteria should be useful for business decisions
. The criteria should support measuring version over version improvements
. The criteria should support competitive comparisons
My strawman proposal for security criteria has the following high level
areas: assurance, security quality, protective capabilities, manageability &
automation, security update tools and security update policies. I have also
added one other category based upon previous feedback on the strawman. My
examples below in each category are not meant to be comprehensive, but just
a good starting point for the discussions.
Assurance is an area that experienced security professionals will recognize.
In the days of the NSA's Trusted Computer Systems Evaluation Criteria,
different assurance levels were tied to different features sets. The Common
Criteria, in use today introduced a more flexible model that has separated
assurance levels from the feature set - EAL4, for example stands for
evaluation assurance level 4. So, in the assurance area, I can think of
several measurable sub-criteria: 3rd-party certifications, source integrity
protections, established change control processes, quality assurance
processes, and penetration testing.
Security Quality is the term I have begun using for things like
vulnerabilities that are found in code. In this category, I can think of
several sub-criteria: number of vulnerabilities fixed, number of public
vulnerabilities unfixed, average time to fix a publicly-reported
vulnerability, number of open listening ports, and number of listening
services or daemons.
Protective Capabilities are the capabilities that might protect the software
from attack even in the presence of a vulnerability. Sub-criteria include:
port firewall capabilities, antivirus/worm capabilities, strong
authentication, behavior monitoring, backup, and security policy enforcement
features.
Manageability & Automation is a category to capture software technologies
designed to make mistakes less likely to decrease security and the less
expertise is required to deploy and manage a product with low security risk.
Sub-criteria would include: security configuration wizards/tools, lockdown
tools, vulnerability assessment capabilities, security reporting
capabilities, and central security management capabilities.
Security Update Packages & Tools are a complementary part of measuring
security until either security quality or protective capabilities reach 100%
effectiveness. Sub-criteria should include: automatic update capabilities,
patch approval capability for enterprise updates, patch deployment tool,
uninstall capabilities, re-compile requirements, reboot requirements, size
of packages, and works with 3rd-party deployment tools.
Security Update Policies is an interesting one that I think there should be
a lot of discussion about. Sub-criteria for this are would include:
security lifecycle time period of products, patches all publicly disclosed
issues, issues security advisories, follows responsible disclosure, offers
mitigation guidance, patch test quality criteria, and patches all
versions/languages at the same time. If I am the responsible administrator
deploying and managing a dynamic web farm, for example, these criteria might
be strong considerations when selecting my software components.
Workload Required Security Features is one I have added based upon feedback
I received when I published an earlier strawman in the Microsoft Security
Newsletter. The work to flush this out still needs to be done, but the idea
is as follows. What security features are necessary to lock down the
security for _any_ OS deployment? What security features would be necessary
for a secure deployment of a dynamic web server in a particular business
scenario? A database server? For a given scenario, we would work to
identify features like identification & authentication, # of biometrics
supported, remote encrypted connectivity, comprehensive security auditing,
etc, that would be useful decision making critiria.
If security metrics is an area you care about, then comment on these high
level categories. Are they too narrow, too broad? If/once we get some
refinement on the high level criteria, we can split off some individual
threads for each category and try to flush out a list of criteria.

Why is XP listening on these ports?
I have just installed XP Pro + SP1 out of the box onto a new machine,
starting with a full disk format. The machine has no network card or
modem yet, so it has had no opportunity to talk to the outside world.
I have made no attempt to configure any services, and have not installed
any other software (not even the Feb 2004 Security Update CD).
So I am a little mystified as to why netstat -an reports the following:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
TCP: 0.0.0.0, listening on ports 135, 445, 1025 and 5000.
UDP: 0.0.0.0, ports 135, 445, 500, 1026
127.0.0.1, ports 123, 1028, 1900
Norton did detect and delete a virus called download.tagdoor and something called crypt.win32 was detected in my comp. memory but it could not do anything about it. I tried turning system restore off, restarting in safemode,running scans,etc. Nothing shows up anymore in the antivirus scan but my computer has been taken over by these ads called timeclock,tramadol,sell future payments and another telling me that i am surfing porn and need to be protected. WE NEED TO STOP SPYWARE!!!
I use the internet alot, and i get way to much spyware. I hate it and I hate all those people who make it, we need to stop spyware, I think it is rediculious how we can get no privacy and no control on this, this is what is killing computers, such a great invention. Its funny because, we pay so much for a computer and we can't use it with out being traced or invaded, we really need to have something done, we need to form some kind of organization to get rid of this nasty thing for good, I think, we need to unite and fight this thing. I have spyware and ad removers, I do, they work like crap, I have like 6 of them, of coarse they help, they work well but not good enough, we need to have something done. Im thinking that if we don't use Kazaa and those kinds of spyware programs, we can go to other programs that are spyware free like shareazaa(if correct spelling). Other programs as well that use it, should not be used anymore. I think microsoft is partially responsible for this fiasco as well, they build great software and allow companies to invade our computers and we cannot control this, it is actually the biggest load of B.S. ever. I am angered greatly since I do web design and design programs and I have to deal with all this junk. I can't take it and I know people who do have it, don't like it. I am calling out to people who read this to help do something. We all need it. Another thing that amazes me as well, that some companies make money off of our information that they take with out my or anyones permission, they take everything of ours and can control browser settings, make icons on your computer, practically hijacking your computer and you have no control. This is all I have to say to the big company Microsoft, you make such good software, then defend it and protect your investment. We pay darn good money for this and others play us like they're our puppet master, we can't do anything, so next time you make another Internet Explorer, defend your product and help us, you started a legacy and now its turned into a disgusting show. I can barely use it now, I have to go to other browsers that are not popular or really connected to IE, like Real One Player Browser and Netscape. Finishing this message off, WE NEED TO DO SOMETHING, SO PLEASE HELP US!! (E-mail me if you have anything in mind about SPYWARE at vrakas@vrakas.cjb.net)
EZ Armor LE - HELP!!!
I recently received a copy of EZ Armor LE with my copy of
Windows Security Update. Since I was having trouble with
Norton AV I decided to give EZ Armor a try. It seemed to
load fine and started to work without a problem but I
noticed that there wasn't any registration page to fill
out and without registering I won't automatically receive
updates. Now here is where it gets wierd - tried to go to
their website - page cannot be displayed error message
comes up. Any link to Computer Assoc. will not come up and
this was the same problem I had with the Symantec sites.
Is something loaded with these programs blocking my access
to these sites? It's the wierdest thing I ever saw as ALL
Unable to load security update
I successfully updated on 7 of 8 critical updates today. Could not update
critical Update Rollup 1 for Microsoft Windows XP (KB826939). And in the
past I have had similar problems where I could not update. What might be
the problem? Thank you. Tag: thanks to Bbonner Tag: 50375
