    - Spybot S & D - Security hole - regedit assistance Spybot S & D identified a security hole in IE > referred me to http://security.greymagic.com/adv/gm001-ie/ , which suggested the following change to the Registry: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Zones\0] Change the value of "1004" (DWORD) to 3. I'm loathe to do anything in the Registry unless I'm sure of what I'm doing and the HELP in Regedit is couched in terms which assume familiarity with the process and jargon, particularly re: "Changing Values". I've been able to navigate in Regedit to [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Zones\0] but now I'm lost. In the right-hand box are 2 columns: Name & Data. The Data column beside "1004" reads "0x00000000 [0]. I see nothing about "DWORD" and HELP re: DWORD is completely unhelpful. It talks about "adding" a value with nothing about "changing" a value, and attempting to add a "DWORD" inserts a completely new Value with a temporary name. (I deleted the New value with beads of sweat dripping on the keyboard.) Even if I am supposed to use "1004" as the "new" name in the hope that it will replace the "old" "1004", what is the process supposed to look like to change the value to "3"? I'm quite lost.     - effects of critical updates I'd be grateful for any help. I regularly download critical updates for XP, especially if they are connected with security. In the last week I have downloaded the the two most recently released, and I have noticed an effect caused to some of the "shortcuts" on my desktop: those for "Floppy Disk (A)";"DVD Player"(in my case "(E)"); and "CD Recorder" (in my case "(D)")no longer work, and I cannot reinstate them. There were no error messages, the WWW service is started, Internet Service Manager says that the site is Up&Running, the log files of IIS are writing my request, but IIS is not giving files back to the browser. I have then removed the 4 Security Bulletins, using Control Panel/add remove programs, but the site was not working anyway. I have rebooted many times the server, and I have noticed that suddenly, after 5, 10 or 20 minutues IIS starts responding to requests with the usual speed. (it seems like there is a timeout of a service and/or a dll) If have then seen in Internet Service Manager that the Execute Permission of my ASP applications was set to: Scripts and Executable and not to Scripts like it should be normally. I Have changed that to Scripts, and from that moment everything works fine, so If I reboot the server, IIS starts resonding to requests just after the reboot, like it does normally. I haven't been able to reproduce the problem, because if I change it back to scripts and executable it works fine. I don't know if one of that 4 Security Bulletins have caused this problem, even after having removed them, or if someone has been able from the Internet to alter my web server. The best thing to do is to prevent it...

*** Good security housekeeping tips, in no particular order: ***

* See http://securityadmin.info/faq.htm

* Go to www.lavasoftusa.com and download AdAware...install, launch, update &
run it. This will rid your computer of spyware/adware.

* Use antivirus software (www.grisoft.com has a freebie) and update it
regularly - at least once a week; daily if possible.

* Use a good firewall to block access to your computer from the Internet
(www.sygate.com is a decent freebie for a standalone workstation; hardware
appliances are a better choice for networks).

* Get a popup blocker to stop IE popups, such as www.panicware.com (they
offer a free one)

* Run Windows Update regularly (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com) to get
all the latest patches for your operating system.

* See http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/Darnit.htm for lots of information on
browser hijacking and how to stop it

* Do not use Imesh or Kazaa any other peer-to-peer file sharing software,
ever.
