spam and adware-spyware and MS Patches
can SPAM and spyware/adware be prevented in a PC was all
patched up with the most recent service pack and security
patches from MS? Or does Spam alone bring Spyware/adware?
We have been expiriencing many issues with adware/spyware
on our PCs, i think its because 90% of our computers
arent pacthed up with the most recent SP's and security
patches. Im trying to convince management that we need a
adware/spyware solution. If anyone has some good links on
any of these questions,i sure would appreciated it.

thank uou

Patches fix flaws or security holes in the software. Viruses, Trojans, and
worms are designed to exploit these flaws. You protect your self from
viruses, Trojans and worms by keeping your systems patched and using a virus
scanner Spam is un solicited email. A fully patched system can get spam
because Spam is not a virus. You protect or limit spam by keeping your email
address as private as possible. Example, if this is your *real* email
address gotenks@dragonball.zyou have just exposed your real email address to
any number of crawlers that harvest email addresses. You would be targeted
for more spam because of *this* post. A way to cut down on that would be to
set your email address like gotenks@NOSPAMdragonball.z a human can decipher
your email address but a crawler would take it is, which is not a valid
email address.

Spy/Ad ware are programs. Not programs that most people want but they are
programs. Patches from MS are designed to fix security holes. It is not a
security hole to install a program. You need to deal with ad/spy ware with
programs designed to deal with ad/spy ware.

for starters. You can also search Google for ad/spyware removal.

You're confusing two different problems. Junk e-mail (spam) happens
regardless of how the spammer gets your e-mail address, and blocking spyware
on your PC won't stop spammers who already have your address.

Now blocking spyware is deceptively simple on Win2K and XP, but it means a
radical change in your computing habits. Simply create a Limited User
account for yourself and do your daily work from there. Use your admin
account for maintenance, such as deliberately installing software.

The radical computing habit change comes from choosing applications and
devices that actually work as a limited user. That means no more Quake 3
Arena, no more Sims 2, no more Quickbooks. Instead, get Simply Accounting,
DOOM 3, get a new CD writer program, etc.

I consult for four travel agencies, all running Win2K or XP Pro in a domain
environment. They haven't had spyware in two years, and I haven't had to
lift a finger to stop it. I've only had to update the machines once ecvery
six months or so, and that's to install Win2K SP4 (or XP SP2) and some
software enhancements asked for by my clients.

Eventually, spyware makers are going to figure out how to run their spyware
as a limited user. However, then it would only run when that specific user
uses the computer. I have a support ticket in with Microsoft to figure out
how to stop even that for Win2K, and I'll get back to the group once it's
finished. In XP, you can set a group policy denying application launching
in %userprofile%
