I have the XP firewall activated, also server(cable)
firewall. Finally, Norton Security and Spam Inspector are
also activated.
Suddenly two days ago my computer would not load web
pages. Loading was so slow that I gave up. My server
had me disable the Norton, and then the situation was
much better.
Now, today, even with the Norton disabled, I'm still not
getting the web pages I need. I tried disabling the Spam
Inspector--no difference. I don't dare disable the
server firewall or XP firewall unless truly necessary.
Any assistance would be truly appreciated. D

slow web access due to firewall? by Sadie

I'd say you're running too many conflicting apps.Chose
ONE software firewall.Norton or XP not both.

Second possibilty:This actually happened to me
yesterday.I was behind a router.Webpages suddenly started
taking an age to load..
Turned out for some reason the router time
synchronisation had been knocked out of whack. It'd
reverted to the year 2000.So,perhaps you should check to
be sure that your computer is synchronised with Internet
time/that your server firewall (I take that to mean
hardware firewall/router?)is set correctly.

Finally,it could be a worm/agobot/virus.

Thanks so much. I'll follow your advice. How can I check
router time synchronisation? I've done a virus check;
I'm clean. The problem started after a live update
session on Norton Security, but they won't help me.

Sadie, I disabled the XP firewall, but with only the
Norton Security things are still terrible! It took a
whole minute just to get this newsgroup up. Appreciate

Don't be scared out of your wits, but there is an agobot
that is attacking Norton at the moment.Norton cannot
detect it,due to its stealthing/polymorphic attributes.(I
must stress-that is only one possibility. It's just that
there are a lot of these instances reported here)

According to other newsgroups users, the Stinger can catch
it,but it comes back if you reboot,so run an online scan
too.If anything's found,post back the result.
Are you certain your patches were up to date?

It could just be a firmware problem,or perhaps
traceroute,too much traffic..hard to say.

What is the exact make of the hardware/server firewall
you mentioned? Can you check the event viewer, see if there
are any errors in there?

Sadie, I don't have any security hardware, only XP and
Norton Security. The whole problem started after I
updated a few days ago. I update very often. I have run
the symantec virus scan and security scan. I have also
just run Stinger. I'm clean, so that's not the problem.
It's not too much traffic, because this has been going on
for a couple of days. I wonder if I should do a system
restore? How do I check the clock/time sync router?
Thanks again for staying with me on this one. D.

Oh,don't worry about the time sync-I misunderstood what
you said about the server firewall.

Did you look for errors in the event log?
start>control panel>Administrative Tools>Event Viewer?

What did you update? The Norton or Windows Update?

Sometimes,W/U can cause problems and you have to remove
the hot fix or patch and reinstall it.Unless,it was a
driver update. In which case, you can just roll back to pre-
driver update time.

I implore you to do a scan at Trendmicro if this does not
resolve the issue.Trendmicro has a good track record with
Gaobots/Agobots.

If it was a Norton AV update-in my experience, sometimes
you do get bad scanning engines. This is usually fixed
next time you update your definitions.Just try to use the
manual update feature a moment,if it exists on
Nortons. You probably have a user interface with a button
to check for updates.

Sadie, I updated Norton Internet Security. They have a
one-step update. subsequent updates did not correct the
problem.
I did a system restore, and it's better, but still not up
to speed.
I looked for errors in the event log, but I don't know
what I'm looking at. In Application there were
errors, "perflib" and "application errors." In Security
there are some "failure audits," and in System there
are "service control manager" errors and a couple
of "w32time."
I will try the scan at Trendmicro. Thanks again.

slow web access due to firewall? by Sadie

Sorry,I missed your subsequent messages.U.K.time
difference.Good to see things are back to normal.

That error regarding W32 time was interesting. You
know, you can submit those errors by clicking on the
highlighted link.

You may like to synchronise with W32 Time, just incase.

Here's how:Go to start>control panel>(Best set to classic
view,then,these instructions will make sense)

Double click the "date and time" icon.First, check that
your time zone settings are correct, and that the clock
displays the right time/date etc.

Then click the Internet Time tab.Press the "update now"
button. This'll bring your computer back into line.

As for the "Failed Security Audit " errors. You are best
off submitting those as described above.
What probably happened is you attempted to alter a
setting,and it wasn't successful.

Sadie
