Norton System Works
After installing Norton System Works software on my
computer, of which is running on Windows Millenium, I
learned that System Works will cause Outlook Express to
run slow. It gives a Microsoft web address where you can
get a fix for it, however, if I do that, then the cost is
$35.00 which is a little ridiculous since the software was
only $47.00. Have I been ripped off by Norton or is there
some simple fix to the problem without me having to pay an
arm and leg for it?

Norton Firewall Settings w/ XP Home
Running XP Home (ICF disabled) on an E-Machines T1742 to a DSL connection. Cleanly installed NPF 2004 and the only way the firewall functions is by turning off the firewall part of the application, including the Trojan blocker! Deleting all of the pre-set rules under Personal Firewall -> Advanced -> General plus putting on "low" all slider controls makes no difference. Symantec want a thieving $40 US per technical help call on top of the purchase price. Am I doing something wrong or have I just wasted my money on NPF 2004?

wsrevmon.exe -> is this a threat to my pc?
Lateley, my pc has been doing some intense number crunching
with the wsrevmon executable that seems to pop up randomly
in my system processes. Basically when it's running, it
uses in the average 90-100% of the cpu's processing power
unless I manually kill it. My updated AV software says that
it isn't a virus nor does it contain malicious code.
The file is located in my C:\WINDOWS\system32 folder.
I did a google search and nothing came up. So I'm debating
on whether or not to delete it and be done with it.

Neutering Administrator
I want to continue using Local\Administrator for day to day activities, and
I know that this is evil.
Can I get away with the following?
1. Create a new account that is hard to guess, something like Admin293.
2. Give Admin293 a strong password and Administrator rights.
3. Save this login and password in a secure location.
4. Take away the Administrator rights from the Local\Administrator account.
5. Continue working as Local\Administrator.
Can anyone think of a reason why this might not work?
I realize that any services or scheduled jobs which ran as
Local\Administrator will have to run instead as Admin293.

Hi, Zonealarm says its ok to grant permission to this wcmdmgr.exe (wild

heavy traffic on port 1025
Many people seem to have noticed heavy traffic on port 1025. This traffic is caused by the task scheduler service hosted by svchost.exe. This service opens port 1025 by default. There are two ways to block this traffic:
1) disable task scheduler service and reboot; be aware it is possible that prefetch, system restore and bootvis won't work properly anymore;
2) deny inbound traffic for svchost.exe using TCP on the local ports 1024-65535; you can use a firewall like Agnitum Outpost 1.0 (freeware) to configure your system this way ( http://www.agnitum.com/download/outpost1.html ).
To exploit task scheduler listening on port 1025, you can even download a tool from the net: remoxec from http://www.securityfriday.com/tools/Remoxec.html . This explains probably the amount of scans of port 1025. Tag: security newsletter pgp Tag: 58295
Get a LEG UP on spyware!
Are you sick and tired of coming home from a long day at
work, turning on your computer, and finding MORE spyware
and adware? Now, you CAN be notified of new
spyware/adware, whenever, wherever, you go...
Pull the plug on adware and spyware and stay NOTIFIED with
the latest version of this free tool...introducing Quad-
aware! It's simple!
A small incision is made into your quadriceps, where a
small beeper-like device is inserted.* When Quad-aware
scans your system--including removable drives--for the
most common types of advertising spyware and safely
removes offending software, you get a tingling feeling in
your leg that TELLS YOU that your computer has just been
cleaned of offensive spyware/adware! The convenience of
having the program notify you regardless if you are at
work or on vacation is phenomenal!
Currently, the utility detects small ad programs from
Komet-Kursor, Sighdoor, Doubleclit, EverAfterAd, and
others.
Quad-aware features an interface as well as safeguards for
users who may not be comfortable with the tingling
notifications in the leg. Because many ad-supported
programs won't function if you remove their ad modules,
you may occasionally want to overrule a tingling alert to
remove one of these components. One other neat feature: it
lets you search for new reference files automatically by
hitting your thigh three times! Quad-aware STAYS updated
when YOU want it to, from the comfort of your office or
car.
As many of us know, "spyware" refers to programs that are
embedded in applications to report information to
advertisers. These programs are included in shareware and
freeware because that's the only way some cheap developers
can pay their bills! If you don't want any part of this--
and feel that staying home just to run an app to see if
you have spyware--you should definitely consider
downloading Quad-aware!
Quad-aware is free for noncommercial use only (you only
pay for the quadriceps operation of inserting the device
that notifies you of Quad-aware's actions).
Convenience, value, dependibility...what are YOU waiting
for? Download Quad-aware NOW!

digital dashboard and IE security
I am looking into implementing a user portal that requires the use of Digital Dashboard. The lastest version of Digital Dashboard will only install properly under an older version of Internet Explorer.

HELP Making Folder Private
I am running Windows XP Pro.
I followed the instructions below on how to make a folder
private. When I got to:
"On the Sharing tab, select the 'Make this folder private
so that only I have access to it' check box."
That line and checkbox are grayed out.
The folder I am trying to make private is in MY DOCUMENTS
which is one of the folder areas that this option should
be available per the instructions below.
The only thing I don't know is if my hard drive
formatting conforms to this instruction:
"You cannot make your folders private if your drive is
not formatted as NTFS."
Can anyone help?
Is there a way to tell if my drive is NTFS formatted?
Any other suggestions?
Thanks.
=======================================================
INSTRUCTIONs FROM MS HELP AND SUPPORT CENTER:
To make your folders private
Open My Computer.
Double-click the drive where Windows is installed
(usually drive (C:), unless you have more than one drive
on your computer).
If the contents of the drive are hidden, under System
Tasks, click Show the contents of this drive.
Double-click the Documents and Settings folder.
Double-click your user folder.
Right-click any folder in your user profile, and then
click Properties.
On the Sharing tab, select the Make this folder private
so that only I have access to it check box.
Notes
To open My Computer, click Start, and then click My
Computer.
This option is only available for folders included in
your user profile. Folders in your user profile include
My Documents and its subfolders, Desktop, Start Menu,
Cookies, and Favorites. If you do not make these folders
private, they are available to everyone who uses your
computer.
When you make a folder private, all of its subfolders are
private as well. For example, when you make My Documents
private, you also make My Music and My Pictures private.
When you share a folder, you also share all of its
subfolders unless you make them private.
You cannot make your folders private if your drive is not
formatted as NTFS. For information about converting your
drive to NTFS, click Related Topics. Tag: security newsletter pgp Tag: 58234

cscript.exe /nologo rollup.js -b MS01-055 MS01-056 MS01-058 MS01-059 MS02-005 MS02-008 MS02-009 MS02-010 MS02-013 MS02-015 MS02-018 MS02-019 MS02-022 MS02-023 MS02-024 MS02-025 MS02-027 MS02-028 MS02-029 MS02-032 MS02-033 MS02-039 MS02-040 MS02-041 MS02-042 MS02-044 MS02-047 MS02-048 MS02-052 MS02-053 MS02-055 MS02-056 MS02-058 MS02-061 MS02-063 MS02-065 MS02-066 MS02-068 MS02-069 MS02-072 MS03-001 MS03-004 MS03-006 MS03-007 MS03-008 MS03-011 MS03-014 MS03-015 MS03-017 MS03-020 MS03-023 MS03-026 MS03-030 MS03-032 MS03-037 MS03-039 MS03-040 MS03-041 MS03-042 MS03-043 MS03-044 MS03-046 MS03-048 MS03-049 MS03-051 MS04-001 MS04-004 MS04-007>Report.xml
My question is there another switch that will check all the bulletins with out me listing all of them. This way every time a new bulletin is added I don't have to go into my reporting script and make sure I added it there too.
Any help is appreciated.

Wizard is not so bright - Can't create System Restore Point
I've followd to a T, the Create System restore Point by
following the Help and Support Center directions to create
a Restore Point. Help says to access the System Restore
Wizard voia the Help & Support link under Start. Then it
says "click Create a Restore Point" and whn I do that, the
Wizard takes me back to the instructions on how to do it
all over again! In short, it goes in circles.
Any clear method of creating a System Restore Point
without getting the run-around?

Deleted files on Floppy & Hard disk -remnants?
Deleted files on Floppy & Hard disk -remnants?
================================
1) When you delete a file from a Floppy disk
-what information is left about that file ??
I know that the data may remain for the file, unless it is wiped or
overwritten ?
What about the Fille name, does information on that still exist ??
-about when it was created on the Floppy disk ??
-when it was deleted ??
Is this the same for a Hard Disk ??
2) How do you delete all information about a particular file, when the file
it is deleted ??
3) Does Disk Copy of a Floppy Disk do an exact copy ??
-does it only copy Files that exist ??
-does it also copy deleted data ??
-is the copy an exact mirror image ??
4) What information goes onto a Floppy, when it first formatted ??
-is there any information about the computer ??
-is there any information about the operating system ??
-does it datestamp the floppy when it is formatted ??
