Is it true that routers will prevent hackers from getting
into a computer system? if it is true, can anyone briefly
explain how and why? I am tempted to get a router,
although I don't really need it, to boost security. Thanks

No. If they are correctly configured and managed they *may* make it more
difficult.

I don't think there is a *brief* explanation as to how and why.

If you don't need one then you don't need one.

Get either a router or a firewall, or both.

If you don't have a need for a router, then a good software firewall, which,
for personal use needn't cost, is a good idea. If you are running XP, use
the software firewall included.

On the other hand, an error in router configuration can open an autostrada
to your network. At the end of the day, it's yet another system to manage.
