Hi,

I was adjusting my security settings in IE 6 and I clicked on "SITES" in the
restricted zone, and there were a bunch of websites, mostly disreputable ones
that I'm not sure how they got there. I didn't put them there. My question is
this: if I remove them will they stay gone forever? I know this sounds silly,
but I really don't know how they ended up in that list, I never added them.
If I click remove, what exactly will that mean? Will those sites end up in
the safe zone? Some advice please? Thanks...

More likely you installed software that placed those web sites in the
Restricted Zone. I'm not sure what the problem is, since they are
disreputable sites. If you remove them from the Restricted Zone they are
gone from your computer.

Before you remove them... have you some application like Spybot that
may have put them there for your protection?

Thanks, Alan... yes I have Spybot S&D, I dont think SB put them there, I
delete whatever shows up after a scan. i use Adaware SE and I always delete
the quarantined cookie files. It's weird i've never noticed this until now, I
mean, before there were never any sites in the restricted zone until I
noticed them today.

If you Immunized with Spybot, it put them there.

I don't know why you don't think SpyBot put them there, when if you
use the Immunize feature, that is what it does.

If you remove them you will be less secure. Having disreputable sites in
the Restricted Zone is a good thing.

Read this:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;Q174360
"Restricted Sites Zone
This zone contains Web sites that you do not trust. When you add a Web
site to the Restricted Sites zone, you believe that files that you
download or run from the Web site may damage your computer or your data.
By default, there are no Web sites that are assigned to the Restricted
Sites zone, and the security level is set to High."

Good software like Spybot, IESpyAd and Spywareblaster will put sites in
the Restricted Zone to help protect you. If you should ever accidently
visit a bad website then extra security is already in place.

OK I am dense, I think I understand... If by surfing online I happen to run
into a disreputable website, SB automatically removes a bad website and puts
it in the restricted zones. ((All hail Spybot S&D)). I don't visit
disreputable sites or at least I thought I didn't. So cookies are dropped on
my computer as I surf, that would be these bad IE sites? I know, I know... I
am dense but I am trying to understand... :o)
Thanks for your advice everyone.

It's not quite like that. SpyBot and a few other programs keep a list of
known "bad" sites and install the list on your computer so you will never
access them. In my opinion, Microsoft made a mistake with the word
"Restricted". It is more like "Blocked".
