When you print a post to file instead of to the printer, what do you use to read it?

Depends on the type of the printer, really. Many programs can read
PostScript files, some can read HP PCL - the two are the most common printer
exchange formats. If your printer is "Generic/Text Only", Notepad can be
used quite well.

If your printer is on LPT1, try this in DOS:

Another useful option for many similar situations - instead of printing to
file, download the PDF printer from www.pdf995.com and print anything on
your screen to a PDF file, to be viewed in Acrobat. It's free with adverts,
and only $9.95 for a full license. I love it. It's great for saving web
pages when you've just made an order.

I think this is what I am looking for, I'll try it out. Thanks for the help.

What I am trying to do, I am using the web based viewer at work, instead of printing the post I want to save the answers to a file and send them home where I will print them or save for future reference. When I save the *.prn file now I don't have anything to open it with. You used to be able to do it in DOS.

Apart from PDF995, you could try saving the pages as HTML. This gives you a
.html file plus a folder containing all the images, etc. If you don't like
the folder arrangement, you can save as a single file *.mht (stands for
Mime-encoded HyperText, or something close) which will open happily in all
the browsers I've tried it in.

The printer that I send it to at work does not have that option, it is either print or print to file. The screen that I see here has only print or copy url of this post. I know I can select all and paste in notepad or similar. I was just wondering if you could do it like you used to in Win 3.1. That's how long it's been since I have been using a computer. Things have changed!

A little confusion, I think. I've suggested two options:

1) Download and install PDF995 (www.pdf995.com). That sets up a dummy
printer, which starts a save dialogue when you select that as the printer to
which you want to print. The save dialogue allows you to name, and choose a
location for, the PDF version of what you're printing. Key points: (a)
install the software. (b) Choose the pdf995 printer in the print dialogue
(there is usually a button labelled "Printer" which allows you to switch to
a different one for the current job).

2) Save as... Nothing to do with printing. Just as you might save a copy
of a document with a different name, or (more relevantly) as a different
file type (e.g. plain text), when you're in Internet Explorer (not, I see,
Mozilla, Opera or Netscape) you can save as a "Web Archive" which bundles up
all the text and images into a single .mht file.

One other possibility: If you use Outlook Express at work, you could take
home a copy of the corresponding message file, import it into OE at home,
and print from there. The file will be called newsgroup-name.dbx.
However, many office firewalls don't allow news traffic, so a web browser
may be your only option there.

Thanks for the info. I will give it a try as soon as I get a chance. Happy
Holidays to all.
