well, this one seems to be a tough one to figure out. Its like I have a fire wall that Im not aware of. check this out. I can access the internet & use chat services & all that cool stuff. But if someone tries to send me files over the internet through like icq, they get an error msg saying session is blocked by a firewall. Also, If i host a server for a game or verbal internet chat service on my computer, I can access that server fine but when I give the ip address to those same people they cant access it at all, like it doesnt exist or something. Im useing windows xp, & I have disabled the firewall under network or internet connections. Can some figure this one out for me?

You should take this up with your ISP - they provide you with the IP address, and they are responsible for including your address in their routing advertisemenets to the rest of the world

Can your ping your ISP? Can your ISP ping you? There is probably a problem here. If you ISP can ping you and nobody else can, then its an ISP issue.

Your DSL router is very likely doing NAT, and this is sortakinda a firewall
of sorts. See if you can configure your icq, etc., to work with a firewall
(I know you can do this with Yahoo Instant Messenger; don't use ICQ).

You should leave your firewall enabled anyway or use a third party firewall
app like zonealarm or sygate - NAT on the DSL router isn't much in the way
of security. You can open up ports as you wish to allow your games to work,
etc....or just accept that there's a tradeoff sometimes between security and
functionality. Yahoo Games, for example, should work fine with a firewall
enabled & no inbound ports open at all.

A modem can be a router, generally speaking. If it isn't even doing NAT,
then by all means enable the XP firewall ASAP - but I agree with the other
replies that you should talk to your ISP.

ok, Ive talked to my isp, & they told me the ip address I have been trying to use is my internal ip address, so now I have my externat dynamic address, but now my comp cant see & use that address to host my servers

Your cablem modem is doing NAT. If you can't set up your applications to
work with this, you may be out of luck if your ISP can't help you.
